This invention relates to improvements in lapel fasteners and more particularly comprehends improvements in devices such as disclosed in my prior Patent No. 2,015,032.

The general object of the invention is to provide a device adapted for holding the lapels of coats in their proper positions so that they will not become out of shape while being handled when on display or during delivery, such as after cleaning or pressing thereof.

A more particular object is to provide a lapel fastener which may, if desired, be formed from a single blank of material and which is exceedingly simple in construction.

A further object of the invention is to provide at minimum cost a lapel fastener which may be quickly applied to the lapels of the coat or the like and which will efficiently perform its intended function.

In the accompanying drawing wherein a preferred embodiment of the principles of the present invention has been selected for exemplification,

Fig, 5 is a side elevational view of a staple which may be used for securing together the elongated members of the fastener Referring more particularly to the drawing wherein like numerals refer to like parts, the reference character A designates in its entirety a coat or jacket which has applied to its lapels B the lapel fastener designated in its entirety by the reference character C.

As clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the lapel fastener C comprises front and rear elongated members l6 and I? and to facilitate application of the fastener to the lapels the longitudinal extremities of one of the members, such as the front member l2, preferably terminate short of the extremities of the opposed member.

An important feature of the present invention contemplates that the fastener C may be formed from a single blank of suitable material as, for example, relatively stiff fiber board and a blank for such purposes is illustrated in Fig. 3. As shown therein, the blank is cut inwardly from the opposed longitudinal ends thereof as indicated at I l, the said slots I4, however, terminating short of the central portion of the blank to provide an integral connecting strip or web 16 for the opposed enlarged sections of the blank which form elongated members Ill and i2 when the same are folded along the scored portions and upon each other in superposed position.

In devices of this kind it is desirable that the opposed elongated members be slightly spaced from each other and to effect such appropriate spacing, a portion of either one or both of the members ill and I2 may be indented or crimped as indicated at it and 28, respectively, whereby when the elongated members are folded upon each other the inwardly extending indented portion of one of the members will abut against the opposed member whereby to hold the remaining body portion and extremities of the members ill and i2 slightly spaced from each other. In one form of the device of the invention such as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, the members Ill and i2 are each indented at opposed portions thereof so that when the members are folded upon each other, the inwardly indented

18 and 20 will abut each other, thereby to hold remaining portions of the members In and I2 in spaced relationship.

When folded in superposed parallel and spaced position, the members Ill and I2 may be secured together by a staple 22 or other suitable means which may if desired be passed through the indented portions ill and 20 thereof and such parts of the staple or other securing means as will be disposed exteriorly of the members 10 and I2 will lie in the indented or recessed areas thereof and will not project outwardly to thereby or otherwise interfere with handling or use of the fastener.

In a convenient mode of manufacture of the device above described, the blank illustrated in Fig. 3 may be provided without the recess or indentations l8 and 2B and when the blank is folded and ready for joining, the stitching or stapling machine may be adjusted to form either or both of the indentations ill or 20 during or in connection with the operation of stitching the members I I] and [2 together.

It is understood that the form of the invention herein illustrated and described is exemplary only of the principles of the invention which are capable of such modification as may be included within the scope of the following claims:

What I claim is:

l. A lapel fastener comprising, a pair of interconnected superposed elongated members, one of said members having a central portion thereof indented to abut the opposed member whereby to hold the ends of said members in spaced relationship and securing means passing through said members, an exterior part of said securing means lying in said indented portion so as not to project substantially outwardly of said one member.

2. A lapel fastener comprising, a pair of interconnected superposed elongated members having opposed central portions thereof indented and abutting eachother whereby to hold. the. remaining portions of saidlmembersain spaced relationship and securing means passing through said members, the exterior parts of said securing means lying in said indented portions so as not to project substantially outwardly of said mem=-- bers.

3. A lapel fastener comprising, a pair of'parallelly disposed elongated members, one. of said;

members having a central portion thereof. in.- dented to abut the opposed member whereby to hold-the ends of said members'in spaced relationship, and. a; securing; stitch forsaid members having one exposed: side thereof. disposed: in said indented portion.

4. Alapel fastenercomprising, a-pair of. parallelly disposed elongated members having'opposed central portions thereof indented and abutting eachother to .hold the-remaining portions of. said members in spaced relationship and a securing stitch for said members having opposed exposed sides thereof disposed in said indented portions.

5. A lapel fastener formed from a single blank of material and comprising, a pair of elongated members folded in parallel relationship, an interconnecting web integral with the central portions of adjacent edges of said members, one of said members having an inwardly indented portion. abutting the opposed member whereby to holdzthe ends of said members in spaced relationmembers in spaced relationship, and securing means passing through said members, the exterior parts of: said securing means lying in said indented portions so as not to project substantially outwardly otsaid members.
