In Great Britain 5 Claims.
This invention relates to paste applying apparatus of the type adapted to apply paste to the margin of a running web such as the wrapper in a continuous cigarette rod making machine.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of pasting apparatus suitable for use with soft pastes such relatively soft starch paste not requiring milling but necessitating a pressure feed.
The invention consists in an apparatus for applying paste to a moving surface, such as the wrapper web of a cigarette rod machine, comprising a paste pot or container having a paste feeding roll located in the outlet and adapted to transfer paste directly to the paste applying disc, and means for applying pressure to the paste to feed it to theroll.
The roll may be provided with a concavity or contour complementary to the paste applying disc and the surfaces adjacent the concave part are bevelled ofi whereby any paste collecting on the sides of the roll is prevented from transi'erenceto the pasting disc.
Further features of the invention will be hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate an apparatus suitable for applying paste 'to a cigarette web:
Figure 1 is a front view of a .paste applying apparatus according to the invention the paste applying disc being omitted;
Figure 2 is a. sectional elevation; and
Figure 3 is a partial view of the feed roll and the paste applying device.
Figure 4 is a partial front view to a larger scale showing the mounting of the feed roll.
Figure. 5 is a part sectional elevation showing the unitary structure of the apparatus according to the invention.
In carrying the invention into effect according to one convenient mode as applied to a posting device for applying paste to the running wrapper web of a cigarette rod machine, a paste pot or box H) is provided open at the upper end and having a rear wall II which slopes toward the outlet l2. The outlet accommodates a paste transferring or feed roll l3 having a smooth periphery which roll is located partly within the box. The roll is preferably arranged so that as large a surface of the roll as convenient is in contactwith the paste in the box so as to impart movement to the paste and insure a uniform feed or flow to the roll. The roll I3 is mounted for rotation upon a shaft I 6 located in suitable bushings Ilia carried by or formed in the side November 30, 1935 (Cl. 131-43) walls I of the box adjacent the outlet l2. The ends of the roll are in close working contact with the surfaces It of the walls It so that substantially no paste can exude at said ends. Where the driving shaft 16 for the roll extends through the wall a stufilng box I1 is provided to, prevent paste exuding at this point. At the other end of the shaft a cover plate I8 is provided. 1
The roll I3 is adapted to transfer paste di rectly to a paste applying disc I! and accordingly the surface of the roll is concaved to'be complementary to the circumference of the disc. Between such concave portion 20 and the ends of the roll, the surface of the roll is bevelled off at 2| so that the rims 22 of the end walls of the roll do not come into contact with thepasting disc l9. By such arrangement any paste that may exude between the ends of the roll and the walls of the box will not be transferred to the pasting disc. I
Below the transferring roll the box .is formed with a bottom plate 23 having an upper, surface complementary in shape to the surface of the roll and extending a substantialdistance around the roll, for example about equally arranged on either side of the vertical.
This plate 23 is arranged in close contact with the roll so that the egress of paste between the plate and roll is prevented. The plate 23 may be separate from the wall ll of the box-and may be adjustable or may be positively fixed in position by pins 23a after adjustment in assembling.
The rotation of the roll I3 is such that the roll surface moves inwardly with respect to the plate 23 so that any paste on the roll after passing the pasting disc, will be carried into the box. As an aid to this action the outer edge of the plate 23 adjacent the roll may be bevelled oif.
. An adjustable plate 23b may be located at the outer side of the plate 23.
,Above the roll I! an adjustable gate or wall 24 is provided which forms the front wall of the box. The gate is mounted to slide in guides 25 and at its lower edge isshaped to agree with the contour of the roll. The gate is adjusted by the screw 28 relatively to the roll lit to provide the desired feed of paste. The gate is provided with an orifice 21 (or a plurality thereof) which insures a constant feed of paste to the roll I3 even when the gate is in close contact with the roll.
Above the box and detachably secured thereto is a paste reservoirv 28 which is of circular cross section and accommodates a plunger 29 by which pressure is applied to thepaste to feed it to the transfer roll l3. The plunger is provided with a rod 30 extending through the upper endof the reservoir and to which a downward thrust is applied by any suitable means. For example a pivoted weighted lever 3| may be provided with a pawl 32 adapted to engage insratchet teeth 33 formed in the plunger rod whereby the plunger is pressed downwardly.
The upper part of the paste box [0 may be of circular shape to agree with the cylindrical reservoir 28 whereby the plunger may extend into the box in feeding the paste, if desired.
The reservoir 28 may be provided with a projecting rim adapted to seat within a recess in the upper part of the box in and suitable thumb screw fastenings 34 are provided for holding the reservoir in position on the box.
The paste supplying apparatus together with the paste applying disc i9 are mounted for adjustment as a single unit so that the adjustment of the pasting disc, relatively to the running web may be obtained, whereby the relative disposition of the feeding roll l3 and the pasting disc I9 are maintained.
For this purpose a mounting 35' (see Figure 5) is provided upon which the parts are mounted and in which the gearing 36 is located for driving the shaft l6 and the pasting disc I9.
The mounting 35 has a depending sleeve 31 located in a bearing 38 carried by the framing of the machine to which the apparatus is applied.
A driving spindle 39 extends through the sleeve 31 and is provided with a gear 40 which meshes with a driving gear 4| which is driven from any suitable part.
The driving gear 4! is of a depth sufficient to allow for a suitable vertical adjustment of the spindle 39 and the sleeve 31. This vertical adjustment is effected by an adjusting spindle 42 which has a screwed part 42a engaging a fixed step 43. Rotation of the spindle 42 is effected by the gear 44, 45 provided with a handle 48.
Suitable driving means are provided for rotating the transfer or feed roll l3 and the paste applying disc l9.
