A. J. FARMER PACKET FOR SAFETY RAZOR BLADES Filed Sept. 25, 1937 Patented May 9, 1939' UNITED STATES PACKET FOR SAFETY RAZOR BLADES Arthur J. Farmer, Chicago, 111., Martin J. OBrien administrator of said Arthur J. Farmer, dc-
ceased Application September 25, 1937, Serial No. 165,743
7 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in a packet for safety razor blades and comprehends a structure which can be easily and cheaply manufactured and which will retain in fiat form a plurality of razor blades, each of which is individually spaced from the other in such a manner as to facilitate insertion and removal.
More specifically the invention comprehends a flat packet formed from a single piece of cardboard, leather or similar material, which is folded in book form, and includes razor blade retaining Wing-like extensions which are folded against the inner faces of the panel sections and secured at spaced points so as to provide pockets in which the razor blades are inserted.
Another feature resides in the provision of additional razor blade retaining pockets formed by the slotting of the winged extensions centrally of their structure so that an additional blade is retained in definite relation to the blades held by the structure heretofore specified.
Other features residue in the details of construction and arrangement of parts whereby a compact blade retaining assembly is provided and at the same time this assembly presents a desirable and pleasing appearance.
Other objects and features of the invention will more clearly hereinafter appear by reference to the accompanying drawing, specification and claims forming part of this application.
In the drawing- Fig. 1 is a perspective of the packet in closed position.
Fig. 2 is an elevation with the packet open.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank.
Fig. 5 is an end view of the blank, and
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a modified form.
The integral blank from which the structure is formed is best illustrated in Figures 4 and 5 and comprises an elongated panel formed of cardboard, leather or other desirable material transversely scored at X intermediate its length to facilitate the folding operation at this point to provide back sections A and B of a folder. Projecting from one longitudinal edge of the panel are a pair of laterally projecting wings or extensions C and D each centered with respect to its adjacent hinged panel section. The junction of the extensions and panel sections are scored at Y to permit folding and when so folded (see Fig. 2) are each secured at spaced points to provide a pair of pockets for safety razor blades.
In the present illustration the extensions C and D are of such a width at their intermediate portion as to extend, when folded above the longitudinal center of the backing sections A'and B, and from their center they are gradually reduced toward their extremities E. The outer edges F are rounded in the present illustration; however, this identical shape is not essential to the assembly. Portions of the structure between the end portions E and the adjacent panel are cut away at H to reduce the length of the scores Y thus not only adding to the appearance of the package but also rendering the folding operation more convenient. This cut away portion also permits the operator to determine when the blade has been fully inserted into its pocket.
By referring to Fig. 2 it will be seen that each of the wings or extensions C and D, after being folded on the score lines Y, are secured at three spaced points by means of rivets J or the like. The outer rivets are located adjacent the ends E and near the lower edge of the backing sheets A and B, while the intermediate rivet is located at the upper edge, above the longitudinal center'of the sheets A and B, to provide on opposite sides thereof spaced pockets in which razor blades Z can be readily inserted.
To provide a pocket for a third blade for each leaf, the winged extensions C and D are each slotted at K, the slots being curved as shown, conforming generally to the curved outer edges of the extension. The center of each slot is in vertical alignment with the center rivets J and thus the pocket thereby formed positions a blade approximately intermediate the outer edges of each pair of blades located between each extension and its backing panel.
A metal fastener L is riveted to the central outer edge portion of the backing sheet B and can be folded about the backing portion A to secure the parts in position, to insure a compact assembly.
In Fig. 6 a plurality of individual leaves M are illustrated secured by staple N, and each leaf embodies a wing or extension P corresponding to the extensions C, D of the other form of the device.
By the construction shown and described a packaging device for safety razor blades is provided which protects the blades, retains them in individual accessible position, and at the same time provides a container neat and pleasing in appearance. The eyelets or staples that secure 50 the winged flaps and form the individual pockets, produce sufficient resistance to retain the blades against accidental removal. The shape of the slot in the wing portion is such as to present an present by the folding operation and permitting.
the panel sections A and B to retain a normal compact engaging position.
When inserting the blades it will be found that due to the contour of the wings C and D and" the kerfs K, one of the corners of the blade is first inserted and this fact is important in that the insertion of a pointed portion islmore readily adaptable for the operation than a wider end or side. I
I What I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
' sheets each including, integral side extensions;
1. A package for safety razor blades comprising an elongated blank weakened at an intermediate pointito form a pair of hinged backing each side extension beingnfolded against its re spective leaf and securedithereto by equidistant securing means, forming spaced blade receiving pockets, andga slot formed in each of said extensionsproviding an intermediate pocket.
2. A fiat package for safety razor blades c0mprising 'a singlet blank, said blank including an elongated body, scored at an intermediate point toprovide hinged backing portions, and an integral lateral extension projecting from each of said backingportions, and means for securing the ends of each extension against the adjacent backing, portions, means for securing the intermediate upper edge of said extension to said backing portion to provide spaced pockets and a slot in each of said extensions below the intermediate securing: means to provide a pocket centrally of the spaced pockets.
3. A razor blade packet comprising a plurality of backing sheets secured together at one edge, each backing sheet being provided with an integral extension along one of its free edges, said extension having an arcuate upper edge and being secured to the backing sheet at each end and atat an intermediate-point adjacent said edge.
5. A razor blade holder comprising a backing.
sheet and a second sheet fixed thereto along'one marginal edge and folded thereagainst, said second sheet having an upper edge of general arcuate" form and being fastened inward of its arcuate marginal edge to the backing sheetat spaced'points defining pockets, and notched portionsformed in the second-sheet below the spaced fastenings.
6. A razor blade holder comprising a backing, sheet and a second sheet fixed thereto alongone marginal edge and folded thereagainst said second;
sheet having its upper edges converging upwardly and fixed at a central point to the backing sheet,,
and means securing the backing sheet and second sheet together above their marginal connection and at points positioned inwardly of the side edges of the backing sheet.
7. A razor blade holder comprising a backing.
sheet and a second sheet fixed to one edge and folded thereagainst, said second sheet being, fixed to the backing sheet centrally near its upper edge at each end near its lower edge todefine a pair of spaced open sided pockets, and the second sheetbeing formed with a slot to; provide anadditional blade receiving pocket.
