UNITED- STATES PATENT OFFICE GROUND m'rrmo Stephen w. Borden, Summit, NJ.
' Application September 13, 1937, Serial No. 163,607 3 Claims. oi. 173-273) This invention p s t a ground fitt for to the grounding pipe being incidental and more connecting a ground wire and its protective covor less immaterial. ering to a water pipe or other earth electrode. When connecting up the fitting the bolt 9 is Fig. l'shows the preferred form of the fitting, slipped over the end'of the armored conductor 6 clamped on a water pipe and with the ground and the conductor is then bent at right angles 5 conductor and its protective armor clamped to to the armor. The bolt is then inserted in openthe fitting. Fig. 2 is atop view and Fig. 3 a ing I8v and at the same time the conductor is bottom view of the same except that in Fig. 3- inserted in opening l3 after which the conductor the ground conductor is attached parallel to the is twisted around bolt 9, washer 22 isapplied and water pipe. Fig. 4 is a modified form in which nut I0 is put on and tightened up. The result 10 v terminal plate 23 has been shortened and the is that the armor i is securely clamped to seat yoke IA added. Fig. 5 is a bottom view of the 8 with ring l2 forced into the corrugations 24 and body l1 and Fig. 6 a vertical cross section on the the conductor 6 is clamped against body I! and center line of body I! and showing an armored in a depression 25 formed therein for retaining l5 conductor resting in' its seat. Fig. 7 is an end the same. The depression 25 is surrounded by elevation and Fig. 8 is a front elevation of the a collar 26 which may be provided with depresclamping bolt 9. Fig. 9 shows an armored sions as 21 for the reception of conductor 6. As ground conductor clamped to the body member will be seen from Fig. 3 the conductor and its with the armor crushed againstthe conductor, covering may beattached with the conductor in Fig. 10 being a cross section on line ill-it of various angular positions with respect to the 20 Fig. 9. water pipe.
Referring to the drawings; ll is a hollow body In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the conmember the details of which are shown in Figs. ductor may be either clamped under washer 22 5 and 6. One side of I! is finished off into a or it may be clamped between the yoke 8A and relatively sharp ring l2 which may be forced into terminalplate 23 as shown in the dotted lines 25 the corrugations 24' in a flexible armor as shown of Fig. 4. Parts 23 and IA are clamped together in Fig. 6. An opening 18 permits the insertion by bolt 3 and nut 5 and may be clamped in a of bolt 9 and the cavity I9 accommodates the number of different angula P s s W th reportion 2| of bolt 9 which is free to rotate therein spect to the water pipe.
when the conductor is not in place. In Fig. 9 the bolt 9 and nut it are of larger, 30
The body member ll is in effect a terminal size and of sufflcient strength to crush the armor fitting for a ground wire and its protective coverof an armored ground conductor against the ing provided with means for attaching both the conductor as shown in Fig. 10 so as to secure covering and the wire thereto and with means both the armor and conductor at the one point.
for attaching the same to a ground clamp. Body This method of using the fitting is useful when 35 H has an extension plate 23 which may extend the conductor is too large or stiff to be easily aponly so far as shown in Fig. 4, in which it is plied u e as er provided with a single opening, as l5, by means While I v rated only armor as a proof which it may be attached to a ground clamp, tective covering-for the ground-conductor it will 0 or plate 23 may be longer, as shown in Fig. 1, be understood that such covering may be a rigid 40 and provided with two openings for attachment conduit, thin wall conduit o p pe and that the to a ground clamp or, with the as t of ot fitting will accommodate such coverings if of sufparts, directly to a ground pipe. While the body ficient Size and strengthmember ll is here shown, in Fig. 4, attached to While :have shown only two embodiments of a ground clamp of the U bolt type, it is to be my invention for the purposes of illustration and understood that it may-be attached to any type description, other changes and modifications may of ground clamp and that any means associated be made th-erem without departing from the scope of the invention and I, therefore, desire to with the plate 23, for attaching the body member be limited only by the scope of the appended H to the ground pipe, is all that is necessary for I clamm carrying out the purposes oi this invention. The w I claim invention resides in the construction of the body 1. A ground fitting for connecting a ground m mb r I! includ n t ran ement by whi h wire and its protective covering to a water pipe it is attached to the ground conductor and, its which includes a body member provided -with. coverin the method employed for attaching it means for attaching the pipe thereto and with latter means including a bolt having a transverse opening for the reception of the covering and a nut on the bolt and positioned on the opposite side of the body for drawing the covering against the body and means on the fitting for attaching the wire thereto.
2. A fitting for connecting a ground wire and its protective covering to a water pipe; which includes a body member provided with means for attachment to the water pipe andwith means of attaching the wire and its covering thereto, said latter means including-a receptacle, nonintegral with body member, for the reception of the covering, the receptacle having a threaded bolt-like portion for positioning in an opening in the body member and a. nut on the bolt-like member for clamping the covering in the receptacle and for clamping the covering and the wire against the body member.
3. A connector for connecting together a water pipe, 3, ground wire and the wires protective covering which includes; a first portion having means for attaching the wire and its covering thereto; a second portion overlapping the first portion and seating against the pipe; and a third portion which, in conjunction with the second portion and tightening means, forms a clamp for the pipe, said third portion and said tightening means constituting means for clamping the first and second portions together in any one of a plurality of angular positions and for clamping the second portion to the pipe, said tightening means being independent of the means for securing the wire or its covering to the first member.
