Description

T. KEHOB Wash-Board.
' Pafented May 20,1879.
I a r a! I! drill/Ill JJVVEJVTOR WW fi, ATTORJV'L m UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS KEHOE, OF OWENSBOROUGH, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BOARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 215,630, dated May 20, 1879; application filed March 1, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS KEHOE Of Owensborough, in the county of Daviess and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wash-Boards; and I do hereby declare that the followin g is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a perspective of my wash-board; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, partly broken away.
This invention has relation to wash-boards; and consists in the improvements in the construction of the same, hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In carrying out my invention, I employ the ordinary frame, with the sides, back, and soapbox. In one side I provide a recess to receive the inner edge of the board, and in the other side a mortise or slot, covered by a hinged door with spring-catch, allows the insertion and retention of the said board. The inner lower corner of the soap-box is beveled toward the center, and a channel is provided, which leads to a groove in the back of the frame, to carry off the drippings from the soap-box.
This latter feature is not novel, as substantially the same means for the escape of the drippings from the soap-box is' shown in Patent No. 193,570, July 24, 1877.
Each board is provided with two difl'erentially-roughened faces, and any required number of boards may be used with one frame.
Referring to the drawings, A A represent the sides; B, the back; b, the cross-bar which forms the lower portion of the soap-box O, and b the lower cross-bar.
In the inner surface of the side A, I provide a mortise or recess, a, which receives the inner edge of the board D; and in the side A is a slot, a, through which is inserted the board D, the same being held in place by a hinged door, E, having a spring-catch, e. The boards D are interchangeable, and have each two rubbing-faces of difterentdegrees of rou ghness.
The bar I) is beveled at m and grooved at 00, to lead the drippings from the soap-box 0 through the groove 00' in the back, and through the aperture mfiin the cross-bar b in to the tub.
The operation of my invention is obvious.
I do not broadly claim removable interchangeable rnbber boards, or those having two roughened faces, as they are well known to the trade.
I claim as my invention The frame herein described, consisting of the side A, having recess a, side A, having slot a, back B, soap-box G, and hinged door E, having spring-catch e, constructed and adapted to serve with interchangeable boards with differentially roughened rubbing surfaces, as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS KEHOE.
