This invention relates to a mask and is illustrated as embodied in a mask particularly adapted to be Worn by a Welder.

An object of the invention is to provide a mask 5 which is inexpensive to manufacture and which is durable in construction.

Another object of the invention is to provide an attaching portion which may be positioned on the head of the operator and an eye shield portion which may be pivotally supported on the attaching portion so that it may be swung from its normal position in front of the eyes to a position above the eyes without removing the attaching portion from the operators head.

A further object of the invention is to provide a novel shield portion in which the transparent material is detachably and resiliently supported in its frame, thus enabling the device to be economically manufactured from a minimum number of parts.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be more apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:

Fig. 1 is a View in side elevation of my improved mask;

Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1 showing the construction of the eye shield portion; and

Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the window retaining member` Referring to the drawing, a substantially U- shaped member I0 is preferably formed from thin and. relatively narrow material, such as cardboard, and shaped to conform to the front and side portions of the head of an operator. The opposite free ends of the member are provided with openings I2 for the reception of a hooked band I4 for securing the member on the head of an operator. If desired, the band I4 may be replaced by strings secured in the openings IZ and tied together in the well known manner.

A semi-circular band I6 is formed of the same strip like material as is used to form the U- shaped member I0 and has its opposite free ends pivotally secured to the legs of the U-shaped member IB as at I8, by the rivets.

A pair of forwardly extending arms 22 are provided, each having one end thereof pivotally supported to the U-shaped member I0 at 23. These arms 22 are made of fiat sheet material and in side View are substantially triangular.

The arms 22 extend beyond the forward edge of the U-shaped member I0 and form side shields for the operators eyes.

An upper strip I9, made of the same strip-like material used to make the bands I0 and I6, has 5 one of its ends secured to the center of the strip i5 and its opposite end secured to the central portion of the member I0.

A window frame 24 is pivotally supported on the outer free ends o-f the arms 22 and is pref- 10 erably formed by pressing a piece material into an angular shaped frame in cross section. The front face has a plane surface and cut out as indicated at 28. A peripheral ilange 3D extends rearwardly around the perimeter of the front 15 face, The end portions of the flange 30 are elongated to provide the rearwardly extending lugs 32 which are pivotally secured to the outer free ends of the arms 22. In forming this pivotal connection, hollow rivets 34 are preferable.

A transparent member 36, such as a double thickness glass, is placed in the angle of the frame against the inner side of the plane face 26. The two glass members are shown separated by a gasket member 38. This double construc- 25 tion is preferable to prevent moisture collecting on the glass while in use. The double glass and its gasket may be cemented together as a single unit to more easily assemble the parts.

As a means for retaining the transparent mem- 30 ber 36 in the frame, a resilient member 40, slightly longer in one direction than the window, is provided. This member is slightly curved as shown in Fig. 4 and is provided with an opening 42 corresponding to the opening in the frame 24. 35 At two of the opposite sides of the member 4U there are pointed lugs 44 which when assembled engage the hollow of the rivets 34. The intermediate portion of the member 40 presses against the intermediate portions of the edges of the 40 transparent member. Because the member 40 is slightly longer than the space between the rivets it is held under tension against the transparent member when sprung into position.

It will be understood that various changes in- 45 cluding the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention and it is not my intention to limit its scope other than by the terms of the appended claims.

What I claim is:

l. A mask comprising a narrow U-shaped band, a substantially semi-circular band having its opposite ends pivotally secured to the leg portions of said U-shaped band, substantially par- 55 alle] arms having one end of each pivotally secured to said U-shaped band, a rectangular frame pivotally secured between said arms and the opposite ends thereof, a transparent member in said frame, and a resilient holding frame having pointed projections at its opposite sides for engagement in said last named pivot points for holding said transparent material in said rectangular frame.

2. An eye protector comprising a harness adapted to be worn on the head, shields pivotally mounted on the sides of said harness and projecting outwardly therefrom beyond the forward extremity thereof, and adapted to be held spaced from the face of an operator, said shields being flat and diverging in width toward their free ends, a lens frame pivotally mounted at its ends on the free ends of said shields and disposed therebetween, a lens removably mounted in said frame, and a resilient retaining member pivotally mounted at its ends on said shields, to engage and releasably retain the lens in said frame.

3. An eye protector comprising a headgear, side shields pivotally mounted on opposite sides of said headgear and projecting forwardly on opposite sides thereof, said shields being relatively wide at their free ends to shield the eyes of an operator from the sides, a lens frame pivotally mounted at its ends on the free ends of said shields, hollow rivets mounting the frame in the shields, a lens mounted in the frame, and an open resilient frame having outwardly projecting pointed lugs to engage the hollow rivets for supporting the frame in engagement with the lens, said lugs pivotally mounting the resilient frame on the shields.
