Claims.
This invention relates to building construction and, more particularly, to a novel interior wall and ceiling construction involving the use of a novel form of plaster board and of a novel means 5 for connecting the same to a support such as plasterers channels.
Interior walls and ceilings in which plaster boards were used, as heretofore known, contemplated a relatively exact positioning of plasterers channels forming supports for the boards unless the boards were to be positioned by means of clips attached to two edges only of the boards.
The present invention contemplates the use of plasterers channels together with plaster boards which are slotted in such a manner that, regardless of Where the channels are located, a slot will coincide with a channel, and means passing through the slot and operable from the room side of the plaster board for connecting the board to the channel.
A primary object of the present invention is to provide a wall and ceiling construction in which the supports may be positioned wherever found desirable with respect to the position of the edges of the plaster boards and to provide a plaster board capable of being connected to such supports and means for connecting the boards thereto.
Another object of the invention is to provide a plaster board which may be positioned by means, not only of clips adjacent the edges thereof, but also by clips passing through openings spaced from the edges of the board, such openings being so spaced that a sufficient number of them will coincide with supports intermediate the edges to firmly connect the board to the supports regardless of the exact positioning of the latter.
Another object of my invention is to provide a wall construction in which any or all of the plaster boards, as is found desirable, may be connected to supports by an operator on the room side of the boards, who may apply connecting clips after the board has been raised to position.
A further object of my invention is to provide a plaster board not only formed with means permitting its attachment to a support regardless of where the latter may be positioned intermediate its edges but which is also formed with locks or seats for the plaster coat which is applied aiter the board is positioned.
A more specific object of my invention is to provide a novel U-shaped clip which is formed with one leg having a detachable end whereby it may be passed through a plaster board and mounted over a plasterers channel on the other side of the board, which end, after positioning may be detached so as to make the legs of the clip of equal length.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from the following description, claims and from the drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is equally representative of a vertical section through a ceiling or of a horizontal section through a wall illustrating my preferred embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but taken at a 10 right angle thereto on the line 22 thereof;
Fig. 3 is a face view of a plaster board embodied in my invention; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a clip embodied in my invention.
Referring now to the drawing, particularly Figs. 1 and 2, which are equally representative of sections through a wall or ceiling, a support for plaster board, which may be plasterers channels 8, may be mounted in any desired and suitable manner such as are well known to those skilled in the art and which, hence are not shown. Previously, if the plaster boards 9 were to be supported along all edges, it was necessary that a pair of channels be positioned so as to coincide, or be in parallelism, with two of the edges and that other channels be provided to intersect the other two edges intermediate the first mentioned pair of channels. In order to eliminate the need for an exact positioning of the pair of channels along the edges of the boards with its consequent unnecessary waste of time I form in the plaster boards 9 a series of openings therethrough, preferably slots 10 which may be positioned, as shown in Fig. 3, along parallel axes which are parallel with the longitudinal edges of the plaster board. Preferably the slots Ill are also arranged in a multiplicity of series of steplike formation with the uppermost slot of each series terminating at a line normal to the beginning of the lowermost slot of the next adjacent series. From this description and the drawing it will be obvious that with slots thus positioned, it is impossible for a plasterers channel 8, when erected so as to cross the board 9 transversely intermediate its ends, to fail to coincide with some slot.
In order to tie together adjacent boards 9 each is provided with holes H along its edges through which may be passed toggles l2. As these toggles and the clips 13 are described in detail in U. S. Patent #1,778,237 issued to F. M. Venzie and serve no different purpose here they will not be described further.
Clips I5 are provided to connect the boards 9 to the plasterers channel 8. The clips 15 are preferably formed of flat metal strap bent to a U shape with each leg of the U given a half turn about its longitudinal axis, as at IS This twist is provided so that not only will the base of the U straddle the channel, but also the legs will extend at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the slot when they are bent into locking position. So that the clips may be used from the room side of the boards one leg of the clip is made much longer than the other so that the builder may hold on to the end of the longer leg, push the entire shorter leg through a slot I, over a plasterers channel 8, (as indicated in broken lines in Fig. l) and pull it down into the position indicated in full lines in that figure where the ends may be bent over as indicated. Preferably, as shown in Fig. 4, the longer leg is weakened at a point l5 opposite to the end of the short leg so that by simply bending the end of the long leg a time or two it will break off at this point. The legs are also weakened at points l5 equally distant from the base of the U, such distance also being, preferably, equal to the width of the channel 8 plus the thickness of the board 9 so 1 that the clip may readily be bent into position to hold the board against the channel.
After the boards are positioned a coat of plaster P maybe applied, the plasterer in applying the same forcing the plaster into the slots 10 which also function as a means for keying the plaster to the boards.
Various modifications may be made in the above described embodiment of my invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof as set forth in the following claims, it being understood that wall and ceiling are herein and hereafter interchangeably used and synonymous, and that functional equivalents of what is technically known as plaster board may be substituted therefor.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a boardlike plaster base, a multiplicity of slots extending thereacross in steplike formation, the uppermost slot of one series terminating at a line normal to the longitudinal axis of the lowermost slot of the next series, the totality of said slots providing means whereby fastening devices may be passed through said base to supports therebehind regardless of the position of such supports.
2. In a plaster base, a multiplicity of slots therethrough in series of steplike formation, the uppermost slot of one series terminating at a line normal to the longitudinal axis of the bottom slot of the next series, with the lowermost slot of the first series beginning closely adjacent one edge of the base, and the uppermost slot of the last series terminating closely adjacent another edge of said base, the totality of said slots providing means whereby fastening devices may be passed through said base to supports therebehind regardless of the position of such supports.
3. A building construction comprising supports, plaster boards, a multiplicity of slots in said plaster boards in series of steplike formation, the uppermost slot of one series terminating at a line normal to thelong'itudinal axis of the bottom slot of the next series, with the lowermost slot of the first series lying closely adjacent one edge of the plaster board and the uppermost slot of the last series terminating closely adjacent another edgeo f said plasterboard, the totality of said slots providing means whereby clips may be passed through a board to supports therebehind regardless of the position of such supports, a clip passing through only one of the slots in any series and a coat of, plaster over said plaster board, said plaster coat passing through all slots.
4. A building construction comprising supports, plaster boards, a multiplicity of slots extending in parallel steplike formation across each of said plaster boards, the totality of said slots providing means whereby clips may be passed through a board to supports therebehind regardless of the position of said supports, and non-resilient clips extending through some only of said slots and engaging said supports said clips each being manually attachable to and detachable from said supports from the room side of said plaster boards.
, 5. In a plaster board, a multiplicity of slots, said slotsbeing positioned with their major axes lying along parallel lines and with the two most closely adjacent slots touching a line normal to said parallel lines and extending in opposite directions therefrom, the totality of said slots providing means whereby fastening devices may be passed through said base to supports therebehind regardless of the position of such supports.
