3 Claims.
This invention relates to a detachable metallic shoe heel provided with a detachable tread lift, and the main purpose of the present invention is to facilitate replacement of a worn out tread lift .by a new one upon detachment of the heel from the shoe, the means for attaching the heel to the shoe and the means for attaching the tread lift to the heel being extremely simple and ecient, as well as permitting easy and expeditious removal q of the heel from and attachment of the heel to the shoe and ready removal of the worn tread lift and application of a new tread lift when the heel is detached.
More particularly, the present invention contemplates the provision of a heel proper of hollow metallic form and open at the top, the means for securing the tread lift to the heel being accessible only through the top of the heel when the latter is detached from the shoe.
A specific object of the present invention is to provide a hollow metallic heel of light weight having simple and efcient means for detachably securing the same to the shoe so that a snug relation is provided between theY heel and the shoe for presenting a sightly appearance when said heel is applied to the shoe.
The exact nature of the present invention willY be more clearly apparent from the following deaccompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary central longitudinal sectional view of a shoe provided with a detachable heel constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the heel attaching plate forming part of the construction shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Figure 4 is a bottom plan View of the heel shown in Figure 1, with the tread lift removed.
Figure 5 is a perspective View of the tread lift; and
Fig. 6 is a section on line 6-6 of Figure 3.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 indicates the upper of a shoe and 6 the sole or bottom thereof. Detachably applied to the heel portion of the sole 6 is the heel constituting the present invention and consisting of a main heel member 'l of hollow metallic construction. This hollow metallic heel member has a flat bottom wall 8 and is open at the top, although provided along its side and rear upper edges with an inwardly directed flange 9, such flange being omitted at the front upper edge of the heel member 'I as shown clearly in Figure 2. For the purpose of securely detachably securing the heel member 'l to the heel portion of-the shoe bottom or sole 6, Iprovide an attaching plate I6 having suitable apertures l I for reception of nails or tacks I2, where,- by said plate I 0 is permanently secured flatly against the under side of the heel portion of theY bottom orsole 6. The plate I0 has the side and rear marginal edge portions thereof depressed as at I3V for engagement beneath the flange 9 of the heel member l, the main portion of plate I0 which is not depressed and which is provided with the openings-I I being of a form and size to snugly t within the space dened by the flange 9. This plate Ill is formed of spring metal so that the depressed marginal edge portion I3 thereof may. yield when the flange S is forced between the same and the bottom 6 of the shoe. This spring tension maintains a Avery intimate contact between the top of the heel member l and the bottom 6 of the shoe, and it will be apparent that application of the heel member is had by simply sliding the same forwardly to effect the engagement of flange 9 over the depressed marginal edge portion I3 of l plate I@ and between said marginal edge portion I3 and the-shoe bottom 6. The removal of heel member l is ofcourse effected by sliding the same rearwardly or in a reverse direction, but means is provided to releasably secure said heel member 'I against this rearward sliding movement until intentionallyY released for that purpose. This meansconsists of a depending extensionV Ill` on the forward edge of plate I0 arranged to snugly. engage the breast of the heel member l and pro-y vided at its lower end with an opening I5 for reception of a screw I6 having detachable threaded engagement in a threaded apertured portionV I'l of the breast of heel member l. Byremoving the screw I6, the heel member is released for being forcibly slid rearwardly and thereby detached from the shoe. A more snug engagement of heel member 'l with the bottom of theshoe,v and the desired amount of frictional engagement between the marginal edge portion I3 of plate IU and flange 9 of heel member l may be had by providing Ythe marginal edge portion I3 with .upwardly pressed spaced portions I8 forming the only contacting surfaces between the marginal edge portion I3 of plate I and the flange 9.
As before stated, the main purpose of providing for detachment of the heel member I fromv the shoe is to provide for access to the interior of said heel member 'I through the open top of the latter whereby fastening means for a detachable tread lift Vof heel member 'l may be manipulated to facilitate detachment of a worn out tread lift and attachment of a new one. Such tread lift'is preferably of special construction including a rubber, leather or composition bottom layer or plate I9 cemented to theV under surface of a similarly shaped metallic plate 20 having a threaded central aperture 2l and provided with surroundingV cessible only from the interior of heel member 1 and through the open top Yof the latter. Also, the
bottom wall 8 of heel member 1 has openings or depressions 25 therein arranged for reception of the prongs or spurs 22 of lift plate 20 so that when the latter is firmly secured against the bottom of heel member 1, the tread lift will be effectively restrained against rotation about an axis coincident with the axis of the stem of screw 24. Accidental detachment of the tread lift from the heel member 'l is thus guarded against, and it will be apparent that the tread lift of the present heel may be readily renewed with great facility and ease. For this purpose, it is simply necessary to remove the screw I6, detach the heel member 'l from the bottom of the shoe, remove the screw 24 so as to permit detachment of the tread lift, replace the screw 2li so as to attach the new tread lift, replace the heel l on the bottom of the shoe and replace the screw I so that the heel is effectively secured in place. Being of metal construction, the heel member will be durable, and it can be made of a desired weight by the use of suitable metal and in view of the hollow construction or form thereof. Y Y
It is believed that the construction and advantages of the present invention will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, and it will be understood that minor changes areV contemplated such as fall fairly within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is:

3. A detachable heel comprising a hollow metallic heel member open at the top and provided along the sides and rear of its upper edge with an inwardly directedflange omitted at the front upper Y edge of'said heel member, the breast wall of said hollow heel member having a threaded opening, a sheet metal securing plate having its maj or central portion'fastened to the under side ofthe shoe bottom inflat contact with the latter and provided with a downwardly offset marginal portion at the rear and sides thereof, the inturned flange of the hollow heel member being engageable over the downwardly offset marginal portion Yof the securing plate by a substantially horizontal sliding movement of the heel with respect to said securing plate, an integral depending extension on the forward edge of said securing plate conforming to and engaging the-breast wall of the hollow heel member and having an opening registered with the threaded opening in the breast wall of said hollow heel member, andra Ascrew passing through the opening in said extension and threaded into said threaded opening of the breast wall'of the hollow heel member for preventingV rearward disengagement of the hollow heel memberfrom the attaching plate, said attaching plate being of spring metal and having its downwardly offset marginal portion tensioned to cause snug engagement of the upper end of said hollow heel member withthe bottom of the shoe, the downwardly offset marginal portion of said attaching plate having spaced upwardly pressed portions engaging the underside of the inwardly directed flange of said hollow heel member.
