1 Claim.
The present invention relates to lead pencils, and more particularly to rubber eraser attachments for said pencils.
Among the objects of the invention are to provide a new and improved pencil eraser which will approximate in wear, the maximum wear of the pencil to which it is attached, but which at the same time will not feel bulky in a users -pocket, which has a greatly enhanced amount of erasing edge and erasing surface, for a definite amount of exposed bulk, without sacrifice of the rigidity necessary for effective erasure, which presents narrow sections for erasures in limited or confined areas, and broad sections for expeditious erasure of large areas, and which is inherently locked to prevent rotation thereof in its supporting ferrule, so that said eraser cannot twist its way out of said ferrule.
Another object is to provide an eraser attachment which is rugged, distinctive in appearance and inexpensive to manufacture.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of various possible embodiments of the several features of the invention:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a pencil, showing my improved eraser tip attached thereto,
Figs. 2 and 3 are longitudinal sections on an enlarged scale, taken respectively on lines 2--2 and 3-3 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the eraser tip, shown on an enlarged scale, and
Fig. 5 is a transverse section, taken on line 55 of Fig. 2
Referring to the drawing, there is shown a wood-cased pencil I0, having the usual wood sheath II enclosing a writing lead I2. This pencil may be either round or polygonal in crosssection, and has a reduced cylindrical neck I3, extending upwardly from a seating shoulder I4.
Neck I3 mounts the improved eraser tip, which includes a one piece ornamental metal ferrule I5, having a right circular cylindrical inner end section I6 snugly embracing the neck I3, and seated against the shoulder I4, and an outer right cylindricalend section II, of substantially elliptical cross-section, with its long diameter desirably about twice the diameter of the inner ferrule section I6, and its short diameter substantially that of said inner ferrule section. For permanent attachment of this ferrule I5 to the pencil, a piercing tool (not shown) is desirably forced through the ferrule section A6 at spaced points, to puncture said section, and force barbs I9 into the neck I3 of the pencil.
A cylindrical eraser 20 is firmly retained in said ferrule section I1 and has a substantially elliptical cross-section corresponding to that of said section, with its inner' plane surface 2I, seated upon diametrical opposed shoulders 22, connecting the two parts of said ferrule section, 5 and an outer plane surface 23 extending beyond the outer extremity of said ferrule section, to present an eraser body 24 of substantial bulk, accessible for erasing purposes.
'The ferrule section I'Hs desirably formed with 10 a series of corrugations 25, which present not only a decorative appearance, but also serve to form ridges in the inner surface thereof, for frictionally gripping the eraser 20 against axial displacement from said ferrule section. In or- 15 der to assure permanent attachment of the eraser 20 in the ferrule section H, the lower end of said eraser is desirably secured to the upper end of the pencil neck I3 by a layer of adhesive 26. 20
The base of the ferrule section I1 is desirably formed on the elongated sides thereof with outward bulges 28, which not only lend to the ornamental appearance of the ferrule I5, but also serve to form spaces 29 between said ferrule 25 and the eraser 20, into which the adhesive 26 may flow to more firmly secure said eraser in position. Furthermore, the base of the eraser 20 may expand outwardly from its elongated sides into these spaces 29, so that the bulges 28 30 under these conditions will serve as abutments resisting axially outward displacement of said eraser from its ferrule I5.
The eraser 20 affords considerably more erasing edge and erasing surface than does the con- 35 ventional circular cylindrical eraser of corre-- sponding bulk, while retaining enough rigidity to resist undue flexures thereof during erasure, and presents acutely curved narrow edges 30 at the opposed ends thereof, to permit erasures there- 40 with in small areas, where it is desired not to disturb the printed or written matter around saidarea, and intermediate longer edges 3i, of flatter curvature to permit expeditious erasures therewith of comparatively large areas. Fur- 5 thermore, the eraser 20, due to its cross-sectional shape, will not turn in the ferrule section I1, and consequently, will not work its way out of said section. I
The ferrule section II, due to its substantially elliptical cross-sectional shape, is relatively stifi along the majoraxis thereof, and any distortions on the wider sides of the ferrule would not be very apparent, because of the somewhat fiat appearance of said sides. 55
Because of the transverse elongation of the eraser tip, said tip, when reposing in the user's pocket, will naturally assume a position in which the elongated sides of said tip extend transversely along the width of said pocket, and will therefore not feel bulky as inthe case of a circular cylindrical eraser tip of corresponding volume.
Also, the pencil will not roll on, the floor, so that the possibility of accidents resulting from stepping on said pencil, is obviated.
As many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently widely diiferent embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope of the claim, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
An eraser attachment for pencils comprising an integrally formed metal ferrule having a mounting end adapted to be telescoped over a pencil and an enlarged head generally elliptical in transverse cross-section with its major axis approximately twice the length of its minor axis, a cylindroidal eraser snugly fitting in said enlarged portion of the ferrule, said ferrule presenting a pair of seating shoulders for said eraser at the junction between the widest portions thereof and said mounting portion thereof, the metal of said enlarged portion being bulged outward between the region of said seating shoulders.
