4 Claims.
This invention relates to a tool holder and more particularly to a holder of a type particularly designed and adapted for use with turret lathes, and it is an object of the invention to 5 provide a holder of this kind which affords a magnified reading whereby an accurate setting of the cutter with respect to the work can be readily and easily obtained.
' It is also an object of the invention to provide a holder which is constructed in a manner to provide sufficient clearance in close work for shavings to avoid bunching of the shavings which would have a tendency to interfere with a working operation.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved tool holder whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a tool holder constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;

As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, my improved holder comprises a plate I of desired dimensions and configuration and said plate I at its transverse center is provided therethrough with a suitably positioned opening 2 which is continued by the bore 3 of a tubular shank 4 extending outwardly from the rear face of the plate I. This shank 4 provides means whereby the holder may be readily placed in working position upon the turret lathe or kindred machine. The work with which the holder is employed may readily enter the tubular bore 3 of the shank 4 as is believed to be self-evident.
Disposed over the front face of the plate I is a second plate 5 having a substantially elliptical opening 6 therethrough which, in the assembly 5 of the holder, provides a pocket or recess sur- 1938, Serial No. 225,244
rounding the opening 2 for a purpose to be hereinafter more particularly set forth. In the present embodiment of my invention the major diameter of the opening 6 is disposed transversely of the plate 5. 5
The plate 5 below the opening 6 and extending to one side thereof is provided with the tool block i preferably integrally formed with the plate 5, and the upper face of this block I immediately below and adjacent to the opening 6 has its top face formed, as at 8, to conform to the adjacent portion of the wall of the opening 6. The tool block I to one side of the center of the opening 6 and within the portion 8 is provided with a socket 9 in which is mounted, as is well known, a cutter Ill;
The lower portion of the plate 5 is pivotally connected to the lower portion of the plate I by he pivot bolt I I which extends through the plate 5 and the block I and through the plate I whereby 20 the plate 5 may be swung in either direction to adjust the applied cutter I0 toward or from its work. The plate 5 is held in its desired selective adjustment by a bolt I 4 which passes through the upper portion of the plate and thru an arcuate slot I5 in the adjacent portion of the plate I. This bolt I4 has threaded thereon a clamping nut 85 which coacts with the plate I.
The plate 5 extends beyond the end portion of the plate I remote from the pivotal connection therewith of the plate 5 and said extended portion of the plate 5 has in swivelled connection therewith, as at I1, a nut I8 through which threads a shank I9. One end portion of the shank I9 carries an operating head 20 and said shank I9 closely adjacent to this head 20 is u rotatably disposed through a bearing block 2| which has swivelled connection, as at 22, with an upstanding post 23 carried by the adjacent end of the plate I.
The outer end of this block 2I is provided with an outstanding finger 24 extending toward the head 20 and the outer surface of this finger is provided therealong with an index groove 25 for coaction with the graduations 26 on the annular member 2'! which is rotatably disposed around the reduced portion 28 at the inner side of the head 20. A suitable holding means, as at 29, is carried by this member 21 for coaction with the reduced portion or shoulder 28 to hold the annular member 21 against rotation.
The graduations 26 are so spaced with respect to the extent of movement of the plate 5 by the shank I9 to represent a one thousandths of an inch while, of course, in fact the movement of the head 20 from one graduation to the adjacent graduation only effects one-half of this movement to the plate 5. This assembly, however, results in a magnified reading so that after the usual micrometer measuring of the work, the tool 19 can be readily moved toward or from the work by proper turning of the head 20 to efiect a finer adjustment or setting of the tool as may be required. After the tool ID has been first roughly adjusted to bring said tool in initial contact with the work by turning of the head 20, the annular member 21 is then rotated to bring the zero graduation 30 into proper register or alignment with the index groove 25 so that a required finer adjustment of the tool can be accomplished quickly and accurately by the operator.
In adjusting the tool for a larger setting, the head 29 preferably should be first turned back and then reset to the desired graduation.
The opening 6 in the plate 5 provides a pocket to allow for clearance in close work for shavings and thus avoid bunching of the shavings, which would have a tendency to interfere wtih the working operation.
Although not shown it is to be stated that if desired the plate 5 may be provided with the usual follow-up rollers.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a tool holder constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A tool holder comprising a plate provided with attaching means, a second plate pivotally connected at one end portion to the first plate, a cutter block carried by the pivoted end portion of the second plate provided with a cutter socket, a nut swivelled to the upper portion of the second plate, a shank threading through said nut, a bearing for the shank swivelled to the plate, said bearing carrying an index, and an operating head for rotating the shank, and a member carried by the head and rotatably surrounding the head, said member being provided with a series of graduations for coaction with the index of the bearing to indicate the extent of swinging movement of the second plate in either direction upon rotation of the shank.
2. A tool holder comprising a plate provided with attaching means, a second plate pivotally connected at one end portion to the first plate, a cutter block carried by the pivoted end portion of the second plate provided with a cutter socket, a nut swivelled to the upper portion of the second plate, a shank threading through said nut, a bearing for the shank swivelled to the plate, said bearing carrying an index, and an operating head for rotating the shank, said operating head being provided with a series of graduations for coaction with the index of the bearing to indicate the extent of swinging movement of the second plate in either direction upon rotation of the shank, the
second plate adjacent to the cutter socket being provided with an opening to provide clearance for shavings and of a size to prevent bunching of such shavings.
3. A tool holder comprising a plate provided with attaching means, a second plate pivotally connected at one end portion to the first plate, a cutter block carried by the pivoted end portion of the second plate provided with a cutter socket, a nut swivelled to the upper portion of the second plate, a shank threading through said nut, a bearing for the shank swivelled to the plate, said bearing carrying an index, an operating head for rotating the shank, and a member carried by the head and rotatably surrounding the head, said member being provided with a series of graduations for coaction with the index of the bearing to indicate the extent of swinging movement of the second plate in either direction upon rotation of the shank, means for holding said member in selective rotatable adjustment around the head,
and means for holding the second plate in its 7 selective adjustments. 7
4. A tool holder comprising a plate provided with attaching means, a second plate pivotally connected at one end portion to the first plate, a cutter block carried by the pivoted end portion of the second plate provided with a cutter socket, a nut swivelled to the upper portion of the second plate, a shank threading through said nut, a bearing for the shank swivelled to the plate, said bearing carrying an index, and an operating head for rotating the shank, said operating head being provided with a series of graduations for coaction with the index of the bearing to indicate the extent of swinging movement of the second plate in either direction upon rotation ofthe shank, said attaching means comprising a tubular shank extending from the rear of the first plate, the
bore of said tubular shank being extended through the first plate, the second plate having an opening with which the bore of the shank communicates.
