This invention relates vto" improvements in coil lwinding machines and has particularreference to 'a L'method'forforming or setting the wound 'coils to a'desirable shape for use in connection withtfields' of electric motors or the like.

Pins protruding from the sides of combs 23 and 24, in Figures 4 and 9, engage in grooves 25 and 26 of side members l3 and |4 which form a channel to guide the movement of the combs. 10
In Figures 2 and 3, side arms 21 engage in slots 28 of crosshead Ill and are secured therein by means of shoulders 29, Washers 30, nuts 3l and the threaded extensions 32 of side arms 21. Guide 33, also illustrated in Figure 11, is an integral 16 part of shoulder 29 and engages in slot 28 to maintain a nonrotating relationship with crosshead lll. Side plates 34 in Figures 2, 5, 6 and 10 are attached to side arms 21 by means of rivets 35 forming a top a'nd a bottom channel and are 20 Vprovided With slots 36 and 31 to receive pins protruding from the sides of combs 38 and 39. End combs *43, in Figures '1 and 2, are mounted on legs 4! which pass through openings in side arms 21 and plates 34 and are set to the desired ad- '25 justment by means of pins inserted in spaced holes 43.
Equalizing bars 44 and 45 in Figures 2, 5 and 6 are inserted in corresponding slots of the upper and lower combs of this device. End plate 46 in :30 Figures l and 2, tends to support side arms 21 and operating shaft |9 in a relationship similar to that of crosshead lll. Slots 41, in end plate 46, permit adjustment of side arms 27. In Figures 2 and 5, coil 49 is indicated in the initial wound 135 position. Coil 5D in Figures 2 and 6, represents a coil in a set or formed position. A group of coils 49 in Figure 12l are indicated as wound from a continuous' strand of wire. A group of coils 50 in Figure '7, are illustrated after they have been '40 set Or formed to the indicated shape.
In operation, this coil Winding device is attached to any rotating head, such as the headstock of a lathe orthe like, by'means of threaded chuck 'l l in Figure 2. End combs 40 are then set and 1145 of comb 23, engaging also in corresponding slots of combs 38. Similarly, equalizing bar '45 is inserted in a'slot of comb 24 engaging also in corresponding slots of Vcombs 39. Pins 42 are then withdrawn from' holes 43 and handle 22 is inserted on shank 2| vand operated to rotate oper-V channel-like structure formed by side members l3 and l4; The pins protruding from the sides of combs'38 and 39 engage in slots 36 and 371,
The movement of comb 23 is transmitted toV combs 38`by means of equalizing bar44 as more olearly illustrated in Figure 2. Similarly vthe movement of comb 24 in the opposite direction, t
is transmitted to combs 39 by means of equalizing bar 45. Figure 6 illustrates the final position of the various parts after the completion of the movements described and coil 50 is now set to the shape illustrated in Figures 2 and '7.
Hand1e22 is nowv removed and end combs 40 are individually moved the remaining distance Vagainst the side arms 21 disengaging them from coil 50. Coil 50 may then be easily removed from the rest of the winding combs and withdrawn over end plate 46 and removed from this Winding, device. End plate 46 may be provided in various sizes, determined 'by the size of the coil to be Wound, so as to facilitate removal of the wound and set coils.
It will benoted that the coils 50 in Figure '7, appear shorter than coils 49 of Figure V12, due 'to the setting operation of the wound coils to the preferred shape. In Figure 8, coils 50 show how the setting operation forms coils to a shape that permits nesting together which is desirable for fields of electric motors or the like.
VI am aware that the' improvements illustrated in the foregoing description are capable of considerable modification in structural details. I therefore, do not desire'that this' invention be limited to Vthe details described-but be construed as broadly as the prior art will permit.
Having thus described my invention, I' claim:
1.4A device of the class described, comprising a cross head, a fixed arm connected'with said cross head, a plurality of movable arms adjustably connected with said cross head, movable winding combs mounted on said arms and adjustable collapsible end combs which are moved toward each other to facilitate the removal of wound coils.
2. A device of the lclass describedcomprising a cross head, a fixed armpro'jecting laterally from said cross head, two adjustable arms projecting laterally from said cross head, one on each side of saidl fixed arm, two Winding combs slidably connected with the'fixed arm and with the adjustable arms, means for sliding the winding combs -on the fixed arm in opposite directions and a connection between said latter wind-' ing combs and the windingV combs on the ad-V justable arms by means of'which thewinding combs on the fixed arms are moved.
3. A device of the class described comprising a cross head, a fixed arm projecting laterally'from said cross head, two adjustable arms projecting l combs and the-winding combs on the adjustable arms by means of Which the winding combs on:V
the fixed arms are moved, and'V an end winding llaterally from said cross head, one on each side of said fixed arm, two winding combs slidablyV connected with the fixed arm and with the adjustable arms, means for sliding the winding oomb adjustably connected with eachv of 'said` 'adjustable arms.

6. An apparatus for formingzarmaturecoils comprising a rotatable support, a central lat-V erally projecting member connectedgwith Vsaid. A coil forming machine comprising three projecting members in substantial parallel ar- ,rangement one of them being a central member located between the other two, said members being relatively adjustable to and from each other, two winding combs on the central member, projecting in opposite directions therefrom, two winding combs associated with the adjustable members and projecting in opposite directions therefrom, means for moving the Winding combs associated with one member in opposite directions therealong, a movable connection between said combs and the combs associated with the other members so that all the combs move simultaneously, and a comb connected with each of the adjustable members and fixed against longitudinal movement therealong, said latter combs being movable to and from the adjustable members.
