This invention relates to bier pins, the primary object of the invention being to provide a bier pin of the adjustable type, which may be moved into close engagement with the casket placed on the bier, securely holding the casket against lateral movement.

An important object of the invention is to provide a bier pin of this character, which will not in any way interfere with the positioning of the casket on the bier. l 'A still'further object of the invention is the provision of locking means for the pin, which will permit of an accurate adjustment of the pin, regardless of the width of the casket.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention` herein described, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.- f

Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the bier pin support, which is of channel bar construction, the upper `edges of the sides of the support being extended inwardly providing horizontal longitudinal franges 6.

Disposed within the support and arranged intermediate the side edges thereof, is a bar 'I having upstanding teeth 8 formed thereon. The movable pin supporting base, which is indicated by the reference character 9 is in the form of a block having a central groove to accommodate therbar 1, so that the base 9 may slide freely through the bier pin support 5. This base 9 is formed with a cut-out portion I0 in which the extension II of the bier pin II is pivotally mounted, the extension having an opening through which the pivot pin I2 extends. A shoulder I3 is formed at the lower end of the pin, and rests on the upper surface of the basev 9, when the pin is in its raised or active position, thereby holding the pin in an upright position.

Pivotally mounted within the cut-out portion I4 of the base 9, and secured to the vertical shaft I5, isa cam I6, which cam is adapted to engage the horizontal pivoted arms I1 that are supplied with irictionstrips I9 which are moved into engagement with the walls of the bier pin support, holding the base in its positions of adjustment along the support 5, by frictional contact therewith. A handle I8 is secured to the upper end of the vertical shaft I5, whereby the shaft andy cam may be rotated to operate the arms I1.

Cooperating with the teeth 8, is a lever 20 which is pivotally mounted on the base 9, the teeth 2| thereof engaging the teeth 8, securely holding the pin against movement, the latter lever acting as a safety catch in the event that the arms I1 should slip under the weight of a casket positioned o'n the bier.

It might be further stated that a roller indicated by the reference character 22 is mounted on the bier pin, so that when th-e pin is in its horizontal position as shown in dotted lines in Figure ll, the casket may be readily rolled thereover.

In the use of the device, the casket is positioned on the bier whereupon the pins are moved rearwardly where they clear the casket. `The pins are now swung upwardly and movedinto engagement with the casket. The handle I8 is now rotated expanding the arms I'I into engagement with the walls of the support securing the base against movement. The lever 2U is moved to its active position as shown by Fi-gure 1 to the end that the casket supported on the bier, is securely held against movement with respect to the bier.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:

1.
