oN'iTEo STATES PATENT OFFICE WRENCH Cyrus J. Mulcay, Aurora, 111., assignor to Richards-Wilcox Manufacturing Company, Aurora,
111., a corporationof Illinois Application May 23, 1936, Serial No. 81,447
V V 2 Claims. (Cl. 81g71) V My invention relates to a wrench, and more "videdflwith an integral v shaped'portion includparticularly to a wrench adapted for use in reing anangularly disposed portion or leg 6 joined moving the screw threaded plugs .from steel to .one end .of the shankl5. Formed integral with drums in which various materials such as oil, and extending outwardly? from one surface of the naphtha and the like are shipped to the user. angularly disposed leg 6 is a working section in Steel drums of this type are provided with difthe form of a square stud or boss 1 adapted to ferent types and sizes of screw plugs owing to fit into a screw plug which is provided with a the fact that the various manufacturers of the Square recess or depression.
drums do not use the same type of plug, and at The other leg of the V-shaped portion is indi- 10 the present time there are a number of different Gated at 3 and is p v ed at its outer end with 10 types of plugs which are most commonly used. a lip or thin edge 9 which is adapted to be in- Onejof these plugs is made with a square recess ed unde e e s o the pp Seals or depression which requires a wrench with a placed over the plugs 0n t e drums so that Said square stud or boss adapted to be inserted into Seals may be pri p a d em v to v c s such recess. Another type of plug, and one o t e p s A longitudinally exte n cen- 15 which is ordinarily provided ona drum where a trally disposed rcenforcing web ll formed infaucet is to be installed in place of the plug, is tegral with the legs 6 and 3 extends directly across made with a square outwardly extending prothe space therebetween and is provided for .iection which requires a wrench with a square Strengthening pu poses.
hole. A third type of plug is provided with two Formed. integral with and extending outwardly spaced apart oblong recesses or depressions, while ro the Outer Surface of the leg 8 adjacent e a fourth plug of a small size is provided with but por i n where i j i the leg 6 s a w rk n s eone oblong recess or depression, and, therefore, tiOh in the form of a hexagonal S ud 0r boss I" two other types of wrenches are required to re-' adapted to fit into a Screw p Which is P OV e move these latter two plugs. Another type of With a hexagonal recess depression. 25
plug is provided with a hexagonal recess and re- The Opposite end of the Shank handle P quires a wrench with a hexagonal stud or boss tion 518 also provided with an ra pp si ly adapted to be inserted into such recess, and still directed angularly disposed Portion l2 that es another type of plug is provided with an integral in a Plane approximately p e o the plane projection or bar portion extending outwardy 0f the ahglllarly disposed portion h S angll- 30 acr t center of t plug which requires a larly disposed portion l2 adjacent its connection different type of wrench. It will be seen, there- With the Shank Portion 5 is g d as Shown fore, that in the past it has been necessary for i Figure 1, and Such enlarged portion l3 the users of the materials shipped in steel drums 15 ovlded with a centrally disposed Square pe of this e to have on hand a plurality of difi ing M. This square opening I4 is adapted to fit 35 m; types of Wrenches f r removing the Various over the square projection which is provided on kinds of screw plugs from the drums, as well as some Plugs- Suitable tools for removing or breaking the seals The angularly dls posed portlon outwardly over the plugs, which, of course, is disadvanof the enlarged Portlon Provided With a Pa 40 tageous of spaced apart oblong projections or studs I5 40 with this situation in View my present inven and I6 positioned in longitudinal alinement with tion has for its principal Object to provide a each other. mm With another t e of l in com These and other ob ects and advantages will be a Small plug z a 3 g igg g apparent from the following description of the pression, either of the projections '5 or I6 may invention taken in connection with the accombe employed f removing the plug D v d a ng. in w The outer end of the angularly disposed por- 50 Figure 1 1s a p a elevetlon of a Wrench tion I2 is reduced in Width and tapered to a bedylhg y Invention; and v v sharp edge similar to a screw driver as shown at Figure'2 is a side view thereof. I1, and this part of the wrench is adapted to be Referring to the drawing-the wrench comused on seals that have to be broken and torn prises a central shank or handle member 5 proout in order to apply the wrench to the plug 55 under the seal. This portion l'l may also be used as a screw driver.
Formed integrally with and extending outwardly from one side of the enlarged portion 13 is a pair of spaced gripping jaws l9 forming a recess 20 that is adapted to receive the centrally disposed projection or bar provided on some screw plugs.
It will be seen from the above that a mechanic equipped with this wrench can easily and quickly pry out or break the seal and remove any one of the various kinds of screw plugs that are commonly used on steel drums, thereby saving the time that might otherwise be required for finding a wrench to fit a particular type of plug, as well as finding a suitable tool to remove or break the seal, so that the necessity of keeping on hand a plurality of wrenches is avoided.
I claim:
1. An article of manufacture comprising a tool having a shank formed of a flat elongated strip carrying a generally V-shaped portion one leg of which is joined to said shank at one end, and a pair of difierently formed polygonal socket having a shank formed of a fiat elongated strip carrying a generally V-shaped portion one leg of which is joined to said shank, a pair of differently formed polygonal socket engaging bosses,
' one on the outer side of each leg of said V-shaped portion, and a reenforcing web joining the sections of the legs of said V-shaped portion carrying said bosses and disposed in a plane extending longitudinally of the shank and intersecting both of said bosses, said V-shaped portion being joined to the shank so that each leg is disposed substantially at the same oblique angle with respect to the shank, whereby the shank can serve as a handle in substantially the same relation for either boss.
