Description

Patented F eb. 14, 1939 2,147,345 DECALCOMANIA PAPER Ferdinand W. Humphner, Oak Park, Ill., assignor, by mesne assig nments, to Mid-States Gummed Paper Company, a corporation of Delaware Application May 20, 1936, Serial No. 80,896
2 Claims.
This invention relates to decalcomania paper and transfers and the present application forms a continuation in part of my copending application Serial No. 19,875 for Decalcomania paper 5 and transfer.
An object of the invention is to provide a decalcomania which is so constructed as to permit ready separation of the main body into individual transfers when the paper base is moistened. Another object is to provide a novel method for making the improved decalcomania. Other specific objects and advantages will appear as the specification proceeds.
The invention is illustrated, in preferred embodiments, by the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tablet or book containing decalcomania sheets embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a broken sectional view,
the section being taken as indicated at line 2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a view similarto Fig. 2 of a modified form of decalcomania embodying my invention.
Referring to the construction shown in Figs.
1 and 2, the paper sheet is first embossed or otherwise impressed to form therein a. series of pockets or depressions which may be round, rectangular, square, or of any other desired shape. Over the embossed paper extends a layer of in) starch and a layer of water-soluble gum. The gum starch and a portion of the paper sheet are shown provided with spaced cuts H forming weakened lines.
Over the gum layer extends a lacquer body 35 which is provided with lines of severance ID in alignment with the weakened lines or spaced cuts l I. The complete lines of severance l0 extending through the lacquer body break up the lacquer body into squares, although it will be 40 understood that any other desired shapes may be formed. Upon each of the lacquer squares may be formed a final print of the usual type.
The construction shown in Fig. 3 is identical with that shown in Figs. 1 and 2 except that the paper sheet is not provided with pockets or depressions.
In the use of the decalcomania product, a sheet or part sheet may be torn from the book shown in Fig. 1 and all of the transfers or only a portion of the transfers removed by moistening the paper or a portion of the paper. When a portion of the paper is moistened, the individual squares formed by the lines It are released and may be slipped off the sheet onto the desired ;5 surface. If desired, the user may tear off a portion of the paper sheet itself containing the super-posed gum and lacquer layers, the cuts II in the paper base torn evenly along the we permitting the paper to be akened lines II. The
small paper strip may then be moistened and the 5 transfer slipped off.
In either form of my invention, I prefer to fracture the gum or water-soluble adhesivev layer so as to prevent curling.
The gum layer is held permanently fiat by a lacquer layer thereabove 10 which extends into the layer. If desired, the star fractures of the gum ch layer may be omitted and dextrine or other suitable materials substituted therefor.
suitable material.
Also, while in the illustrations given, I have shown square or rectangular areas suitable for receiving designs or impressions, it 20 will be understood that such areas may be circular or of any other desi red shape; and it will also be understood that other means for forming the weakened areas ployed without departing invention.
The foregoing detailed given for clearness of un or lines may be emfrom the spirit of my 25 description has been derstanding only, and
no unnecessary limitations should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be 30 construed as broadly as permissible, in view of the prior art.
I claim:
1. A decalcomania product comprising: a. paper base having depressions therein, a starch 5 coating on said base, gum on said coating, lacquer on said gum, said lacquer being provided with complete lines of seve rance forming lacquer areas of predetermined shape, and said gum starch and paper being provided with spaced cuts in alignment with said lines of severance, said lacquer areas being aligned vertically with said depressions.
2. A decalcomania pape r product compris ig:
a paper base having depressions therein, a starch 45 coating on said base, gum on said coating, a
transfer body material on said gum, said body material being provided with complete lines of severance forming lacquer areas of predetermined shape, and said gum, starch and paper 50 being provided with spaced cuts in alignment with said lines of severan areas being aligned vertic sions.
ce, said transfer body ally with said depres- FERDINAND W. HUMPHNER.
