This invention relates to lavatories, sinks, washbasins and similar articles, and more particularly to articles of the above character used in combination with cabinet structures.
An object of the invention is to provide a knock-down lavatory cabinet structure including a pressed metal base, a pressed metal cabinet .detachably mounted on the base, and a sink or washbasin, preferably pressed from sheet metal, detachably mounted on the cabinet.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a combined lavatory cabinet structure which is composed of a plurality of unitary structures adapted to be connected together with the aid of simple means, such as a few bolts or screws, such construction permitting separate manufacture of said unitary structures without the necessity of handling the entire lavatory cabinet before the time of final installation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a knock-down lavatory cabinet structure which can be packed and shipped to the place of installation in unass'embled condition, thus permitting careful and separate packing of such parts as enameled side panels and doors, and yet permitting the same to be easily assembled in place by an unskilled workman.
A further object of the invention is to provide a knock-down lavatory and cabinet structure comprising as separable parts a basin, a cabinet, and a base'adapted to be readily joined together to form a complete structure,.the improved arrangement being such as to permit the basin, cabinet and base parts to be manufactured in a variety of colors and the assembled units to be furnished to customers in many different color combinations.
Other objects of this invention will appear in the following description and appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts in the several views.

'Before explaining in detail the present invention it is to be understood that the invention is not limited in its application to the details of construction and arrangement of parts illustrated inthe accompanying drawings, since the invention is capable of other embodiments and of being practiced or carried out in various ways. Also it is to be understood that the phraseology or terminology employed herein is for the purpose of description and not of limitation, and it is not intended to limit the invention claimed herein beyond the requirements of the prior art.
Referring to the drawings, there is illustrated therein, by way of example, a lavatory cabinet embodying the present invention.4 As shown in Figs. 1 and 3 the lavatory cabinet structure consists of a sink S; a cabinet frame C; two symmetrica] side panels P, P; two symmetrical doors D, D; and a base B. The lavatory cabinet may leave the manufacturing plant with all of said elements being separate. I have found that in many instances the frame C and base B may be connected together at the plant and handled as a single unit thereafter. y
In assembling the structure, the rst operation is to connect the cabinet frame C with the base B, unless said cabinet and said base are shipped to the place of installation as a single unit, as
' mentioned.' Thereupon, the side panels P, P are put in place and connected to the cabinet frame C with a plurality of screws or bolts. The sink S is next placed on the top of cabinet frame C, their corner plates and holes therein being alined. Bolts are inserted through said holes and nuts are tightened on said bolts. When so assembled, the structure forms a combined lavatory cabinet structure accomplishing the objects hereinbefore mentioned and possessing many other advantageous features.
The sink or washbasin S is formed by stamping operations from a single sheet metal blank. It is adapted t be provided in the assembled condition with a number of suitable water faucets, and its Ans overflow and drain holes are adapted to be connected with a suitable drain pipe beneath the basin. The cabinet frame C, the side panels P, P, as well as the base B are made up in the present embodiment from a number of sections stamped out from` sheet metal. said sections being connected together by spot welding and screws. The cabinet is provided with a bottom or floor, a number of suitable shelves, and a double or a single door. Parts, the thickness of which is apparent to the observer. such as doors and side walls, are made thick and hollow in order to impart to the structure a massive appearance of pleasing contour. All exterior exposed surfaces of the lavatory. side panels. and base are specially treated to provide an attractive, durable enamel nish. Any desired color combination may be produced in the lavatory cabinet of my invention by a proper selection of colors for thebasin, side panels. doors and base.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 and 3, the basin or sink S comprises a substantially hori-v zontal table portion 2U having a suitable basin or iluid receiving bowl 2| formed substantially at its middle. The basin 2| is provided with a suitable drain hole 2 la and an overflow hole 2| b. Suitable hot and cold water faucets 24. 24 admitting hot and cold water in desired .proportion to a mixing spout 23 are provided at the horizontal table portion 20 in assembling the structure. The horizontal table portion 20 is surrounded at its four sides with a continuous rolled rim 25. which rim merges at its outside edges into a. continuous depending apron 26. The apron 26 extends downwardly around all four sides of the table 20. and its lower edges are provided with an inwardly extendinar substantially horizontal ange 21. flange 21 is adapted to rest upon the upper flanges of the side panels P. P.y At all four corners formed bv the apron 26 there are provided corner plates 28. 28 (see Fig. 1) secured to the ange 21 in any suitable manner, preferably by spot welding. Each of said plates 28,' 28 is provided with a hole 29.
The cabinet frame C comprises two symmetrical side sheets 30 and 3| g back bracing consisting of a narrow angular tie 32 and a wide lower tie 33; a--floor sheet 34 connecting the side'sheets at The4 the lower edges thereof;V and an upper front channel 35 connecting the side sheets 38 and 3| at their front upper corners. The channel 35 is bent or bowed outwardly as shown in Fig. 4. The above specified members being fixed4 together in the manner described below in detail, the cabinet frame C forms a rigid and strong frame, constituting the structural foundation of the lavatory cabinet to which foundation other structural units, namely the doors D, D, the sink S, the side and 4|, which flanges are, in turn, provided with narrow forwardly extending flanges 42 and 43 f Fig. 14) Along the top edges of said wide flanges 4|) and 4| there are provided narrow substantially horizontal flanges such as flange 44 of sheet 3U see Fig. 13). In the present embodiment of the invention. there are no horizontal flanges provided along the lower edges of the sheets 30 and 3|. At the top portions of the wide front flanges 40 and 4| the sheets 30 and 3| are connected together by means of the front channel 35 secured to said flanges by the extremities of its Web. Plate 46 is secured, preferably by spot welding, to the upper flanges 41 and 36 of the channel 35 and the side sheet 30, respectively, as shown in Fig. 13. Similar plates are provided at each of The back braces or ties 32 and 33 are secured` by the extremities of their vertical flanges to the vertical back anges 38 and 39 of the sid'e sheets 30 and 3|, as is shown in Figs. 1, 9 and 11.
The floor sheet 34 is provided at its edges with a depending narrow apron 49, the front portion whereof is provided with a substantially horizon- -tal inwardly extending flange 5|] (see Fig. 15).
The apron 49 of said floor sheet 34 is secured, preferably by spot welding, to the lower edges of the sheets 30 and 3| (see Fig, 15). 'Within the cabinet frame there are provided a number of suitably'arranged shelves 5|, 5| supported by brackets 52 spot welded to the cabinet frame structure .or connected thereto in any suitable manner.
The detachable base B shown separately in Fig. 2 is designed to provide support for the entire structure, and is made concaved in front to provide the necessary toe room. In the present embodiment, the base B comprises side members 53 and 54 suitably shaped in front to provide said toe room, a front member 55 and a rear member 56. Said members 53, 54, 55 and 56 are flanged as shown and are connected in any suitable manner to form a substantially rectangular structure. Members 53 and 54 are provided with supporting angular flangesv 51 and 58 which flanges in the assembled condition bear upon the bottom surface of the oor sheet 34.
For securing the base B to the cabinet frame C, the cabinet frame is superimposed upon the base, flanges 51 and 58 coming in contact with amaca@V the oor sheet 3l of the cabinet frame, whereupon the base is attached to the frame with a plurality of vbolts 59. A supporting channel member 68 is provided between the front member 55 and they iioor sheet 34. l
A double door structure D, D is exemplified in the present embodiment, each door, consisting of inner and outer panels. Each door comprises a shallow pressed-out box-like front panel 6I having rearwardly extending flange 62, the corners of the panel being rounded as at 63, Fig. 4. The back flanged panel 64 is tted into the front panel (see Fig. 4) and is securely aixed thereto. I prefer to use a double door, the respective halyes being suitably hinged as at the upper hinge piece 65 secured to the front channel member 35 and the lower hinge 66 secured to the ange 58 of the oor sheet. In proximity to their meeting edges, door panels D, D are provided with suitable handles 61, 61. However, it is to be understood that I de not desire to be limited to the double door construction, since a single door may be advantageous in some particular instances. With the double door construction adopted in the present embodiments, the panels D, D carry at their upper outside corners angle brackets 68, 68 (see Fig. 12) provid-ed with suitable pivots entering respective holes in the hinge pieces 65, 65. At their lower outside corners the panels D, D are provided (see Fig. '1) with suitable holes adapted to receive pivots 69, 69 carried by the lower hinge pieces 66, 66. Suitable, preferably brass, washers 18, 10 are provided at pivots 69, 69 and they may be slightly lubricated to ensure easy and noiseless operation of the door. y
One, or both, of half-doors D, D is provided with a suitable self-operating latch, Fig. 16. In the present embodiment the same is exemplified by a spring operated latch consisting of a bracket 1l aixed to the door panel 64 and carrying a vtapered plunger 12 cooperating with a catch 13 affixed to the channel 35.' The plunger 12 is adapted to oe maintained in its extended position by a suitable spring housed Within the bracket 1|. In the position of the plunger shown in Fig. 16, a certain eiort is necessary to open the door, which prevents selfopening of the door.' It may be desirable in some instances to have the latch of the foregoing character provided at one of the half-doors, selfopening of the second half-door being prevented by a suitable lock or latchprovided within the respective handle 61..
Each of the side panels P, P comprises a side portion 14 provided with an upper iiange 15, a back iiange 16, and a lower flange 11,l as shown in Fig. 1. Along its vertical front edge, the side portion 14 merges smoothly and seamlessly into the front ange portion 18 provided along its edges with a. vertical inwardly extending flange 19. For securing the left panel to the cabinet frame C, said panel is arranged at the respective side of the frame in such a manner thatI the lower flange 11 entersfthe slot between the lower edge of the sheet 30 and the respective shoulder` of the side member 53 of the base B (see Fig. 11), causing the back flange 16 to bear against the back ange 38 of the inner sheet 38 (see Figs. 11, 10 and 9) and the upper ange 15 to rest at the upper flange 436 of the sheet 38. A suitable gasket is placed between the anges 16 and 38,
and said nanges are securely connected together' with the aid of screws 8l, 8 I The method of attaching the right panel to the cabinet trame is similar to the above vdescribed method o! attaching the left panel. Suitable stops or bumpers 82, 82 are provided at front portions 18, 18 of the panels P, P to prevent their scratching by the door panels D, D when the same are fully opened. Similar bumpers 83, 83 are secured at the channel member 35 (see Fig. 16) and the same serve as stops for the doors D, D in closed position thereof.
I claim:
1. In a combined lavatory cabinet having a cabinet frame, a sink pressed out from a single sheet metal blank to provide a. horizontal table portion, a basin in said portion, a continuous depending apron around all four sides of said portion, and an inwardly extending flange around the lower edges at said apron; and means provided at said ange adapting the sink to be secured to the subjacent cabinet frame, said means comprising superimposed corner plates carried by the ange and the adjacent portion of the cabinet frame.
2. A knock-down lavatory cabinet comprising a sink having a basin portion, a cabinet frame having an open top, a supporting base, two side panels, means for detachably connecting said cabinet frame to said base, means for detachably securing said side panels to said cabinet frame, and means for detachably mounting said sink on said cabinet frame with the basin portion thereof projecting into the open top of said frame, said last means comprising corner plates carried by the sink and frame and bolts for securing the plates together.
3. A combined lavatory cabinet comprising a rigid pressed metal cabinet frame having an open top and a floor, a pressed metal supporting base. a sink having a portion extending into `said open to said cabinet trame, said sink and frame having cooperating corner plates and said base having y a pair of upstanding flanges adapted to bear against said cabinet oor, and means for connecting the corner plates together.
4. In a combined lavatory cabinet including a sink and a cabinet having a oor, said sink being mounted upon and providing a top for the cabinet, a detachably pressed metal base having inturned top and bottom flanges on four sides thereof, means for securing said 'base to said cabinet'structure subjacently thereof, and supporting flanges located above the top ange at two sides oi the base adapted to bear against the `floor of the cabinet.
5. In a combined lavatory cabinet' having a cabinet frame, a sink pressed out from a single sheet metal blankto providev a horizontal'table portion, a basin in said portion, a continuous depending apron around all four sides of said portion, and an inwardly extending ilange around the lower edges` at said apron; corner plates provided at said flange, corner plates at `t-he top corners of the cabinet frame cooperating with said first named plates, and means interconnecting the plates for securing the sink to said cabinet frame.
6. In a combined lavatory cabinet including a sink and a cabinet having a floor, a detachable pressed metal base having top and bottom flanges, said top flanges providing means for securing said base to said cabinet structure subiacently thereof, and a supporting ange adapt-r CERTIFICATE OF CORRECTION.
