PATENT OFFICE noon nonnen,
Ivan E. Beeler, Portland, Orez. Application February 23, 1938, serial No, 192,176
2 claims. (c1. 292-251) My invention relates to door holders and more particularly to door holders adapted to secure a hinged door in a desired open position.
One of the principal objects of my invention is to provide a door holder equipped with means for securing a door in a desired open position relative tothe door frame.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the above described character equipped m with manually operable means whereby a door may be secured in a desired open position.
Al further object of my invention is to provide a device of the above described character which is durable in construction, eiiicient in use, simple in operation and economical in manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, appended claims and annexed drawing.
Referring to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views:
Fig. 1 is a fr ont elevation of a portion of a door jamb having a portion of a door hinged thereto and illustrating my invention secured thereon.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail top plan view of one of the hinge members.
' Fig. 4 is a detail side elevation of the cam.
Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the intermediate member or washer.
Fig. 6 is a plan View of the blank from which the cams and actuating arm are formed.
Fig. '7 is a disassembled perspective view of a modified form of hinge. l! A In practicing my invention there is rovided the lower section of a door assembly comprising a portion of a jamb or frame member 5 having hinged thereto a portion of a stile or door member 6 by means of a hinge 'I of typical construction.,
The stile and jamb are each fashioned with a I slot 8 and 9 respectively formed in the outer face thereof and receive leaf sections I0 and I I respectively of a hinge assembly. Said leaf sections are formed on one end with butt sections I2 and I3 respectively, the same constituting hinge members. The butt sections are fashioned with serrated faces oppositely disposed relative to each other. The leaf sections are secured within the respective slots by means of plates I4 secured on the outer faces of the stile and jamb by screws,
bolts or the like I 5. The slot 8 is of a larger size than` the leaf section I0 to permit relative movement therebetween for a purpose hereinafter set forth. y y Interposed between the butt sections I2 and I8 is an intermediate member or washer IB having a central aperture I1 for accommodating a coil 5 spring or the like I8, said spring engaging the serrated faces of the butt sections I2 and I3 and 'normally urging said butt sections apart. A
threaded pintle I9 extends through the butt sections, washer and spring and has secured on one 10 end thereof a nut 20 threaded adjustable thereon. The nut is provided with oppositely extending pins or set screws 2I forming pivots for a pair of spaced cams 22, said cams terminating at one end thereof in an actuating arm 23 and 15 at the opposite end in a cam face 24 for engagement with the upper face of the butt section I2. Said nut and cams constitute a cam device for effecting a clamping of the butt sections and washer together against the tension of the spring 20 I8 to secure the door member in adjusted position relative to the frame member. The nut is adjustable lengthwise on the pintle to vary the clamping action of the cams 22.
From the foregoing it will beapparent, the 25 actuating arm 23 being in the position illustrated in dotted lines in Figure 1, that 'downward movement of the actuating arm 23 will cause the cams faces to engage the upper face of the butt section I2 and move the same downwardly, together with 30 the leaf section I0 in the slot 8, against the tension of the spring I8 and thus clamp the washer I6 in engagement with the serrated faces of the butt sections I2 and I3 thereby securing the door member 5 against movement relativeto the frame 35 member 6. It is to be understood that wear on the serrated faces and on the washer may be compensated for by adjustment of the nut 20 a heretofore described.
While I have shown and described my inven- 40 tion in connection with hinge doors and the like, it is to be' distinctly understood that the same is adaptable for use in connection with other mediums whereby it is desired to secure the same in adjusted position.
In the modified form of hinge shown in Figure 7 the leaves 30 and 3| are fashioned with integral butts 32 and 33 respectively and are of substantially the same width as the butts. The leaf 30 is provided withl a single aperture 34 whereby the 50 leaf may be pivotally connected to the door or the like, while the leaf 3I is formed with a plurality of apertures 35 for maintaining the same that various types of hinges may be employed and that a. single or double cam may be utilized in connection therewith. A `Wrench of any conventional type may be vneed for tensioning the device.
What I claim is:
1. A device of the character described, comprising, a pair of spaced hinge members having butt and leaf sections respectively, said leaf sections adapted to be connected to a stile and jamb respectively of a hinged door assembly, a pintle extending through said butt sections, an intermediate member interposed between said hinge members. a spring Within said intermediate member and engaging said butt sections for normally urging the latter apart, and a cam device carried by said pintle and operable to eect a clamping of said hinge members and said interamiamo mediate member together against the tension of said spring whereby to secure a door in a desired open position.
2. A device oi the character described, comprising, `a pair of spaced hinge members having butt and leaf sections respectively, said leaf sections adapted to be connected to a stile and jamb respectively of a hinged door assembly, a pintle extending through said butt sections, an intermediate member interposed between said hinge members, resilient means about said pintle for normally urging said hinge members apart, and a cam device carried by said pntle and operable to effect a clamping of said hinge members and said intermediate member together against the tension of said resilient means whereby to secure a door in a desired open position.
