It can now be seen, that when the governor i controlled line 3| is in proper position at a defie nite speed of the driven shaft, the accelerator control 30 not in operation, and the clutch pedal 40 43 in clutch-engaged position, operation of the knob 40 for swinging the sector i1 will bring all of the slots 21 into full registry so that the spring 25 can pull the rocker 23 which withthe help of the tensioning unit 44 will shift the blocks 5 8 on the bar I for positioning the same under the springs 6 to prevent closing thereof.
The tensioning unit 44 consists of the disks 45, 46 and 41. The disk 46 is stationary and is secured by its extension, 48 to the engine block. 50
Pintles 49-50 extend beyond opposite sides of the disk 46 and upon these pins the disks 4145,
respectively, are mounted for rotation.
The disk 48 has the concentric slot 5| therein registrable with the slot 52 in the disk 41, while 55 the disk 45 has the laterally extending pin II projecting through both of the slots. A spring '4 extends from the pin I to the lug IS on the outside of the disk II.
The disk I! is provided with the ear ll connected by the link I1 to the arm ll oi the block shifting structure shown in Figure 2. The disk 41 is provided with the ear 56 which is connected by the link II to the lower end of the rocker 23. (See Figure 1.)
Obviously, as a result of the above operations, the rod 8 (see Figure 2) will be shifted, tensioning the springs Ill associated with those blocks I which will not pass under corresponding valve spring cups i2 until the corresponding valve springs have become untensioned, whereupon the blocks I will be urged by those springs l0 under tension to move under the spring cups remaining unsupported by blocks 8, so that all of the valves will be supported in open position. Thus no compression can take place, eliminating any resistfui force to the free running of the vehicle, while the transmission is actually in gear.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of! the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the invention what is claimed as new is:-
1. In combination an internal combustion engine, valves for the said engine, holding means for the valves to hold the same open to prevent compression and control means for the said holding means, said control means including a detent made up of a plurality of swingable sections having slots therein, said sections provided with accelerator, driven shaft and clutch connections.
2. In combination an internal combustion engine, valves for said engine, holding means for the valves to hold the same open to prevent compression and control means for the said holding means, said control means including a detent made up of a plurality of swingable sections having slots therein, said sections provided with accelerator, driven shaft d clutch connections, a connection between the said detent and the holding means.
3. In combination an internal combustion engine, valves for said engine, holding means for the valves to hold the same open to prevent compression and control means for the said holding means, said control means including a detent made up of a plurality of swingable sections having slots therein, said sections provided with accelerator, driven shaft and clutch connections, a connection between the said detent and the holding means, said connection consisting of a loop disposed through the said slots and tensioning means for the said loop.
4. In combination an internal combustion engine, valves for said engine, holding means for the valves to hold the same open to prevent compression and control means for the said holding means, said control means including a detent made up of a plurality of swingable sections having slots therein, said sections provided with accelerator, driven shaft and clutch connections, a connection between the said detent and the, holding means, said last mentioned connection consisting of a rocker having a member disposed through the said slot and tensioning means between the said rocker and the said holding means.
