"I'hisinvention appertains topnew and useful j "improvements in internal combustion engine.
*controls and more particularly to acontrol for the compressionj'of thecylinderjs, whereby when "5 ""desired, thecompression can be releasedtoperff mit coasting of the companion vehicle while the ,transrnission isindriving'gear. y An important object of the inventionis to pro'-- vide a compression release-of the cha'racter stat l edwhereinyarious controls of they ehicle must be in afdeiiniteposition before the releasement h i a i a supporting the sectors l1, l8, I9 andlfl each hav- ,-ing an openingat its upper end for receiving the cajnbe accomplished.
other important objector the invention is; j to provide acontrol ofthecharacter stated which. -1 will be positive acting and not susceptible to the Inthedrawings:
Figure 1 represents a side elevational view of 1 1; an internal combustion engine andgdrive there- :7 a 0, xfrom showing-the invention installed thereonr Figure2--is a perspectiveview of an internal combustion enginewith the valves cover rernoved showing the spring lifting means. 3

a Figure 5 is a side elevational view of the tensioning means shown in Figure l.
Figure 6 is an edge elevational view of the tensioning means.
Figure 7 is a perspective view or the inside disk of the tensioning unit.
Figures 8 and 9 represent the intermediate and outer disks of the unit shown in Figure 6.
Figure 10 represents exploded perspective view of the parts of the detent.
* Referring to thedrawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can'be seenin Figure 2 i that numeral 5 generally refers to a conventional internal combustion engine in which are located the valve springs 6. The motor illustrated has a side cover permitting access to thesprings 8 i and in carrying out the present invention, a guide bar 1 is mounted horizontally in the springs com- The blocks are provided withround openings through which the rod 9 extends, the rod abeing provided witha plurality of springs ill each connected at one end to the bar and havingits opposite end bearing against one side of a complementary block 8. The bottom of the springs compartment slot ha therein downwardly through which. depends the arm H i from the Obviously when the" blocksi a ate position under thegspringcups i2, theLvaIves' I 3 will 5 beretaine'd in elevated position softhatpompressionin the cylinders cannot take place. Numeral l4 generally refers to the detent-which consistsof a bracket arm i5 suitablyj secured to the engine structure. This arm l5has the shaft 10 or pin 16 extending'through its upper-portion for shaft 16. The lower and wider portions of the movement therein or the loop 22, which loop is on the upper end of the rocker arm23 iulcrumed as at 24. j A tension spring 25 *isinterposed between the lower portion ofthis rocker arm 23 .and 20 the motorproper. U I
Each of the sectors II toilii, inclusive is provided with an {ear,2 6. The ear 261ofthe sector ,20 is connectedby therod 21 to the vjoint 28,
between the. accelerator pedal 28 and the accel- 5 orator control rod- 30. From the ear of the sector i9 extends the line 3| through the conduit 32 to the bell crank 33 which ispontrolled by the governor 34 located on the M ountershaft 35 and geared as at 3,1: with the driven shaft 31. 30
The sector I8 is" provided with the line extension 38 which extends through theconduit 39 to the knob 40 projectiri'g rearwardly of the instrument board 4|.
The last sector I! has its ear connected 'by 35 the rod 42 to the clutch pedal is.
It can now be seen, that when the governor i controlled line 3| is in proper position at a defie nite speed of the driven shaft, the accelerator control 30 not in operation, and the clutch pedal 40 43 in clutch-engaged position, operation of the knob 40 for swinging the sector i1 will bring all of the slots 21 into full registry so that the spring 25 can pull the rocker 23 which withthe help of the tensioning unit 44 will shift the blocks 5 8 on the bar I for positioning the same under the springs 6 to prevent closing thereof.
The tensioning unit 44 consists of the disks 45, 46 and 41. The disk 46 is stationary and is secured by its extension, 48 to the engine block. 50
Pintles 49-50 extend beyond opposite sides of the disk 46 and upon these pins the disks 4145,
respectively, are mounted for rotation.
The disk 48 has the concentric slot 5| therein registrable with the slot 52 in the disk 41, while 55 the disk 45 has the laterally extending pin II projecting through both of the slots. A spring '4 extends from the pin I to the lug IS on the outside of the disk II.
The disk I! is provided with the ear ll connected by the link I1 to the arm ll oi the block shifting structure shown in Figure 2. The disk 41 is provided with the ear 56 which is connected by the link II to the lower end of the rocker 23. (See Figure 1.)
Obviously, as a result of the above operations, the rod 8 (see Figure 2) will be shifted, tensioning the springs Ill associated with those blocks I which will not pass under corresponding valve spring cups i2 until the corresponding valve springs have become untensioned, whereupon the blocks I will be urged by those springs l0 under tension to move under the spring cups remaining unsupported by blocks 8, so that all of the valves will be supported in open position. Thus no compression can take place, eliminating any resistfui force to the free running of the vehicle, while the transmission is actually in gear.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of! the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the invention what is claimed as new is:-
1. In combination an internal combustion engine, valves for the said engine, holding means for the valves to hold the same open to prevent compression and control means for the said holding means, said control means including a detent made up of a plurality of swingable sections having slots therein, said sections provided with accelerator, driven shaft and clutch connections.
2. In combination an internal combustion engine, valves for said engine, holding means for the valves to hold the same open to prevent compression and control means for the said holding means, said control means including a detent made up of a plurality of swingable sections having slots therein, said sections provided with accelerator, driven shaft d clutch connections, a connection between the said detent and the holding means.
3. In combination an internal combustion engine, valves for said engine, holding means for the valves to hold the same open to prevent compression and control means for the said holding means, said control means including a detent made up of a plurality of swingable sections having slots therein, said sections provided with accelerator, driven shaft and clutch connections, a connection between the said detent and the holding means, said connection consisting of a loop disposed through the said slots and tensioning means for the said loop.
4. In combination an internal combustion engine, valves for said engine, holding means for the valves to hold the same open to prevent compression and control means for the said holding means, said control means including a detent made up of a plurality of swingable sections having slots therein, said sections provided with accelerator, driven shaft and clutch connections, a connection between the said detent and the, holding means, said last mentioned connection consisting of a rocker having a member disposed through the said slot and tensioning means between the said rocker and the said holding means.
