AAAAAAAA ER Filed July 3, 1937 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 6 I Inventor Wade [Ir/wine? By am;
Afiorueys Patented Feb. 7, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CALF WEANER- Wade P. Inabnit, Wilsall, Mont.
Application July 3, 1937, Serial No. 151,901 3 Claims. (Cl, 119-430) This invention relates to weaners for calves, colts, and the like, and an object of the invention is to provide a device of thischaracter which will be effective in preventing calves, colts or other animals from nursing the mother animal,
and also to cause the mother animal to leave the nursing animal; together with improved means for fastening the weaner to the animals head.
The invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood. from a study of the following description taken in connection with'th'eaccompanying drawings wherein.
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the v weaner and showing the same applied.
Figure 2 is a front elevationalview also illustrating the application of the weaner and Figure 3 is a perspective View of the weaner. I Referring to the drawings by reference numerals it will be seen that the preferred embodiment of my improved weaner comprises a metallic strip 5 bent into arcuateform and having elongated pointed prongs or spurs 6 project- 7 ing outwardly therefrom in a substantially radial series.
At the ends thereof the strip 5 is pivotally connected to one end of metallic cheek straps 1 through the medium of pivot pins 8 engaging in openings provided therefor in the ends of the strip 5 and aligning with elected openings 9 arranged in series in the lower ends of the cheek straps whereby an adjustable pivotal connection between the strip 5 and the straps l is provided for.
Riveted'to the inner side of the cheek straps I as at I 0 and M respectively are complemental head straps l2 and I3 respectively. In the present instance the head strap l3 at its free upper end is provided with a buckle i l for cooperation with the free end [5 of the strap I2 for securing the ends of the straps l2 and I3 together at the top of the head of the animal.
A throat latch IS, in the form of a strap is provided to be passed around the neck and throat of the animal as shown in Fig. 1 and opposite 7 portions of the throat latch l6 work through loops I! provided in one end of straps l8, l9.
Straps l8, l9 are also provided with loops 20 through which the head straps I2, 13 extend,
and one of the guide straps, for example the guide strap I9 is provided at its free end with a buckle 2| for cooperation with the end 22 of strap l8 whereby said straps l8 and I9 may be adjustably fastened together across, the forehead of the animal.
For an intermediate portion of the throat latch l6, and the free end of the head strap 12 there is provided a guide 23 in the form of a strip of leather or other suitable material, the opposite end portions of which are folded in- 5 wardly toward one another and riveted to an intermediate portion of the strap to provide loop 24 for the latch l6 and loop 25 for the end 15 of strap 12.
Furthera nose band 26 of metal is set into 10 arcuate form for disposition around the nose of the animal and at its respective opposite ends is riveted as at 2'! to the lower end portions of the cheek straps l. Secured to the inner side of the nose strap 26 by rivets or in any other suitable 15 manner, and as indicated generally at 28 is a pad 29 in the form of a strip of any suitable fabric. I
The ends of the nose strap 26 are connected together through the medium of an adjustable jaw 20 strap 30. of leather or other suitable material and adapted to pass under the lower jaw of the animal.
The weaner strip 5 is normally and yieldably urged downwardly to assume a position across the 2 nose of the animal through the medium of a spring 3| that has an intermediate portion thereof looped about one of the pivots 8 and one end portion suitably anchored to the adjacent cheek strap 1, and the other end portion suitably en- 30 gaged with the adjacent end of the weaner strip 5 as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
To secure the weaner strip 5 at the desired position of adjustment there is provided a strap 32 suitably secured at one end to the weaner 35 strip 5 intermediate the ends of the latter and having a free end cooperable with a buckle 33 suitablyprovided on an intermediate portion of the nose strap 26. The manner of applying the weaner to the head of the animal is thought to 40 be obvious and to be clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. With the weaner in position it will be apparent that the weaner strip 5, while not interfering with the ordinary feeding or drinking of the wearing animal will, upon attempt by the 45 wearing animal to nurse the mother animal and through the medium of the prongs or spurs 6 prod the mother animal and cause her to leave the nursing animal. Also with this device sucking will be prevented.
Further through the arrangement of check and head straps, throat latch, nose strap, and jaw strap, the device may be securely fastened in position on the head of the animal and will remain in proper position thereon notwithstand- 55 ing efforts on the part of the Wearing animal to dislodge the same. i
The advantages of the weaner will, it is believed, be apparent from the foregoing taken in connection with the drawings, and having thus described the invention,
What is claimed is:
l. A calf weaner comprising a rigid U-shaped 7 weaner strip for application to the nose of an animal, metallic cheek straps pivoted at one end to the ends of the weaner strip, a rigid nose strap extending between and secured at its respective opposite end to the cheek straps adjacent the ends thereof pivoted to the weaner strip, a chin strap connecting the ends of said nose strap, complemental head straps secured at one end to the metallic cheek straps, a pair of opposed complemental straps provided intermediate their respective ends with loops receiving the cheek straps and complementarily provided each at one end with means for detachably securing said ends together across the forehead of an animal, said complemental straps having free ends provided with guide loops, and a throat latch in the form of a strap having opposite portions threaded through said loops.
7 2. A calf weaner comprising a rigid U-shaped weaner strip for application to the nose of an animal, metallic cheek straps pivoted at one end to the ends of the weaner strip, a rigidnose strap extending between and secured at its respective opposite ends to the cheek straps adjacent the ends thereof pivoted to'the weaner strip, a chin strap connecting the ends of said nose strap, complem'ental head straps secured at one end to'the metallic cheek straps, a pair of opposed complemental straps provided intermediate their "respective ends with loops receiving the cheek straps and complementarily provided each at one end with means for detachablysecuring said ends together across the forehead of an animaLsaid complemental straps having free endspro-vided with guide loops, a throat latch in the former a strap having opposite portions threaded through said loops, a spring device engaged with one end -.-'mal, metallic cheek straps pivoted at one end to g the ends of the weaner strip, a rigid nose strap extending between and secured at its respective op-- posite ends to the cheek straps adjacent the ends thereof pivoted to the weaner strip, a chin strap connecting the ends of said nose strap, complemental he adstraps secured at one end to the metallic cheek straps, a pair of opposedcomplemental straps provided intermediate their respective ends with loops receiving; the cheek straps and complementarily provided each... at
one end with means for detachably securings aid ends together across the forehead of ananimal, said complemental straps having freeends provided with guide loops, a throat latch inthe form of a strap having opposite portions threaded through said loops, a spring device engaged with one end of one of said cheek straps and one end of the weaner strip at the pivotal connection between said one end of saidone cheekstrapand said weaner strip for normally urging the'latter toswing downwardly into a position across the nose and mouth of an animal, an adjustment strap secured at one end to said weaner strip intermediate the ends of the latterfand a buckle, on the intermediate portion of said nose strap and with which the free end of said adjustment strap is cooperable for securing the weaner strip at the desired adjustment, said weaner strip having prongs extending forwardly and radially therefrom.
