This invention relates to improvements in ias tening devices and articles to be fastened.
More specifically the present invention is directed to a clasp or fastening device for securing ornaments, initials, badges, jewelry and such articles on a support such as wearing apparel, hand bags, suit cases and the like.
The device of my present invention is particu-' larly well adapted for use in fastening initials l0 scribe the same in connection with such application, it being understood'pof course, that I do not wish to be limited to this or any other specific application of my invention.
Heretofore in fastening initials on ladies hand bags the initials were provided with a plurality of prongs, usually four, which were forced through the material of the bag. Great care must be taken in applying such initialsto avoid mar- 2c ring the bag and the lining, special tools must be employed and great skill exerted in clenchin these prongs beneath the fabric of the lining. As a result. of the skill required the fastening of such initials has been left to those trained in such work.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a fastening device which can be readily applied to an article such as hand bag initials, for
example, to firmly secure the same to its support 30 by the user of the bag without the use of any tools and without the danger of marring the fabric ofthe bag.
Another object of the present invention resides in the provision of cooperating means on the article to be fastened whereby the article will be held close to the support and when once fastened will not move or rotate on the support and wherein there are no projections or exposed prongs to scratch or injure the user or the fabric 40 of the support.
Other objects of the present invention will be manifest from the following description and the accompanying drawing, in which drawing:
Fig. l is a sectional elevation of my improved 45 device;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the spring member; and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the cover plate.
Referring to the drawing in detail: 2 designates a hollow body portion or dome having a plate I of spring material inserted therein and supported by the walls thereof. This plate isprovided with radially extending intersecting slits 8 which provide spring gripping fingers. This plate is provided with a central orifice Ill adapted to'receive a projecting member or pin l 2 having a roughened or threaded surface. It is to be understood that I may employ 6 a threaded screw if desired.
After inserting these two plates 4 and 8 in place I turn the rim of the dome 2 over to providean annular flange H which serves to clamp the plates 4 and 8 in place and firmly to hold the same against the outwardly curved wall of the dome. By simply turning over the rim of the dome 2 against the plate 8 thereby pressing the fiat plates against the curved wall of the dome the necessity of forming shoulders or other stops for this purpose in the dome is eliminated.
The fastening pin I2 is carried by the article to be supported, which in the present illustration is an initial H. In applying this fastening pin or screw l2 to the initial or other article to be fastened, I drill a hole in the material of the initial slightly larger. than the head I8 of the pin or screw and after inserting the head of the pin therein I upset the material of the initial about the same to provide an inwardly extending annular flange l8 overlying the head of the pin securely to hold the same in place. By inserting the pin head in the article in this manner I eliminate the necessity of solder which has heretofore been employed for this purpose and which 18 likely to work loose in time and which results in an uneven surface. By my improved method of fastening the pin in the initial orarticle a flat unobstructed surface is provided so that the initial will lie flat and snugly against the fabric ll of the support throughout.
In addition to the screw I2 I also employ a pin or stud 20 oii'set with respect to the pin or screw I! which is secured to the article in the same manner as the screw [2.
As will be seen from Fig. 3 the plate 8 has a flat annular rim 9 and the central portion is preferably slightly domed or concavo-convex so that there is a space between the fabric "of the material of the support and this plate adjacent the flange ll of the dome 21 As will also be seen from the drawingthe stud or pin 20 is so positioned on the article It as to be withn the confines of the annular flange ii at the space above mentioned which is provided between flange and the cover plate I.
The application of the fastening device of the present invention will be readily understood. The initial or other article Ills placed upon the hand bag r other support at the desired location and with a slight pressure on the article the point of the screw l2 will penetrate the fabric of the support. Thedome 2 with the plates 4 and 8 attached thereto is then placed upon this screw and pushed firmly into place, the screw entering the orifice iii in the plate and being guided thereby into the small hole 1 at the intersection of the slits 6 in the plate 4. The slits 8 will spread causing the four points of the spring metal formed by the intersecting slits to engage the threads on the screw 12 to grip the same and resist withdrawal of the pin.. The pointed pin 20 will engage the supporting fabric and also penetrate the same and enter the space provided between the fiange l l and the cover plate 8 as above mentioned.
It will be appreciated that the engagement of the points of the spring plate 4 with the threads of the screw 12 will securely hold the article on its support and that the engagement of the pin 20 with the fabric will serve to prevent rotation of the article on the support once the same is fastened as aforesaid.
It will also be appreciated that by the novel method of fastening the screw ii in the initial or article the even surface provided thereby will permit the article to closely engage the support.
While I have illustrated and described one embodiment of my invention and one application of the same, it is to be understood that I do not wish to be limited thereto as my invention has manifold applications and various changes and modifications may be made in the structure herein illustrated and described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.-
What I claim is:- g
1. A fastening device comprising in combination a hollow dome-shaped body member, a spring plate having opposed gripping fingers supported in said body member and supported by the curved walls thereof, a cover plate in said body member, said plates being superimposed. said cover plate being provided with a central orifice and its outer face being concavo-convei: adjacent said central orifice and flat adjacent its edge, the edge of said body memberhaving an inwardly turned flange bent over upon the flat edge of said cover plate to clamp both plates between said flange and the inside of the curved wall of said body member.

A device of the class described comprising a hollow body member having converging side walls, a spring plate supported within said body member by said side walls, said plate having transverse intersecting slits to provide spring gripping fingers, a cover plate having a flattened annular rim and a concavo-convex central portion, said cover-plate being supported by said spring plate and having a central orifice therein, said body member having its edge folded over upon the fiat rim of said cover plate securely to hold both of said plates in said body 'member and an article supporting a projecting member adapted to be inserted through the orifice of said cover plate and gripped by said fingers.
3. A device of the class described comprising a hollow body member having converging side walls, a spring plate supported within said body member by said side walls, said plate having transverse intersecting slits to provide spring gripping fingers, a cover plate having a flattened annular rim and a concavo-convex central portion, said cover plate being supported by said spring plate and having ,a central orifice therein, said body member having its edge folded over upon the flattened rim of said cover plate securely to hold both of said plates in said body member and an article supporting a central projecting member and an oifset projecting member. said central member adapted to be inserted through the orifice of said cover plate and gripped by said fingers, said oflset member being sopositioned as to be within the confines of said body member and extending into the space provided between said folded edge; of said body portion and the concayo-convex member of said cover platean'rrma'mw'ron. v
