Burklin, Toledo, Ohio, assignor to The Burkay Company, Toledo, Ohio, a corporation of Ohio This invention relates to gas 'burners of the type intended more particularly for use in connection with water heaters.
An object of the invention is the provision 5 of a burner of this character of simple and eiiicient construction and adapted to provide a supplemental supply of heated air and to direct its discharge into the flame rising from the burner when burning, whereby to support comlil bustion of practically allcarbon matter in the flame and produce a flame of maximum eiliciency.
A further` object of the invention is the provision of a ring type burner of this character l5 having a novel and compact arrangement of gas supply manifold, air and gas mixing tubes and supplemental air discharge means,vwhereby to enhance the eiiiciency and commercial value thereof.

The burner comprising the invention includes in its preferred embodiment a gas manifold section A, a mixer section B and a supplemental air 35 supply section C.
The manifold section A comprises a ring form of manifold having an inlet passage 2 at one side, a cleanout passage 3 at its opposite side closed by a removable plug 4, and has on its 4o under side a plurality of lugs or bosses forming supporting feet. The ring I is provided on its top with a substantially at seat 5 which is tapped at equidistantly spaced points therearound to receive burner spuds 6 opening into 45 the interior oi the ring and having their upper headed ends projecting a distance above the seat 5, as shown. 'I'hese spuds are adapted to register with and correspond in number to the mixing tubes in the mixer section.
50 The mixer section B is of ring form of a diameter to seat down on the manifold seat 5 and includes an annular series of vertically disposed mixer tubes it joined at their sides by webs II and each seating at its lower end on said manifold wseat around the(head oi' a. respective burner spud 6, which serves to center the mixer section on the manifold. Each tube I has the lower end portion of its bore reduced to receive and mount the lower end of a smaller mixer tube I2 with its upper portion spaced from the Wall of the tube Ill to provide an annular space IlltheIebetWeen.
The tube I0 has a cross-bore I4 below the tube I2 for admitting the primary mixture of air to the latter and is provided with a larger crossbore I5 through the lower end portion of the 10 space I3 to admit a secondary mixture of air to said space and to the large bore of the tube IIJ. Y It is thus apparent that each tube I 0 and I2 is of the double tube Bunsen burner type wherein there is first a primary mixing and then a secondary mixing of air with the gas discharged into the mixer tube from the burner space, as well understood in the art.
The tubes I0 at their upper ends are connected by and preferably formed integral with a top ring I6 which is vertically bored to form open top continuations of the tube bores with the upper ends of such bores outwardly flared, as at I1. The inner side wall of the ring IB is preferably inwardly and upwardly tapered and continues a short distance above the open upper end of the ring bore and forms an inturned horizontal flange I8.
The supplemental air supply section C seats on the .flange I8 in spaced overhanging relation to 30 the tubes IG and forms an air chamber 2U having supply communication through its bottom and through the opening I9 of said flange with the air space within the mixer section B. The discharge outlet from the chamber 20 is in the 35 form of an annular slot 2| through its circumferential wall and disposed substantially radially of the chamber. It is thus apparent that the supplemental air discharge is in annular film form crosswise of and in commingling relation to the flame and unburned combustible material rising from the mixer section around the edge of the section C.
The section C embodies in the present instance a bottom plate 22 and top plate 23 held 45 by spacer blocks 24 in proper spaced relation to form the discharge slot 2l, and are secured together by screws 25 passing through the plate and blocks and threaded into the flange i8 to hold the sections B and C centered.
The bottom plate 22 is of ring form with its opening registering with that of the iiange I8, and its outer edge portion is raised to form an upstanding wall with the upper edge of such wall radially flanged or broadened as shown at l5 26. The outer bottom edge portion of the plate 22 extends over the upper open end of the mixer tube I0 in spaced relation thereto and terminates at substantially the outer edge of the 'ring I6 to form the radially opening flame discharge slot 21, as shown, with the top edge flange 26 projecting out somewhat further and in greater vertically spaced relation to the tube opening.
The top plate 23 is preferably slightly larger in diameter than the bottom plate 22 with its under side seated to form a downturned edge ange 28 which is concentric to and vertically spaced from the flange 26 to provide the annular air discharge slot 2l therebetween. The plate 23 is preferably further upwardly dished at its central portion to increase the capacity of the air chamber 20 formed by the two plates 22, 23. A bolt 36 passes centrally through the top plate 23 and thence down the central open part of the burner and through a central aperture in a spider or frame part 3l disposed within the manifold ring l and. forming a part thereof. This bolt serves to hold the manifold section A inv assembled relation to the other sections B and C with the bottom edge of the section B properly seated on the manifold top 5.
When the burner is in use with the supply of gas in the manifold l open and with the flame discharging in annular sheet form from the llame block 2l, it is apparent that the flame will pass up around the outer edge of the supplemental air supply section C and eect a heating of the lower wall of such section and will also heat the interior Wall of the mixer section C. The air for the supplemental chamber 2li passes up through the interior of the mixer section B thereby becoming partially heated by the mixer section and is further heated within the chamber 26 by radiation from the walls of such chamber. This heated air is then discharged from the chamber 20 in annular sheet form into the burner flame and effects a complete combustion of the unburned carbon particles contained in the flame, thus producing an intensely hot flame.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement or form of the parts, as it is capable of numerous modifications and changes without departing from the spirit of the claims.
'Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is:
1. A gas burner comprising a gas supply manifold of ring form having an annular series of burner spuds on its top, .an annular mixer section mounted on said manifold and having mixer tubes in register at their bottoms with said spuds, said tubes being joined at their sides to cooperate therewith to form an air passage upward through the central portion of the mixer section, said mixer section having an inturned flange at its top, a supplemental air discharge section mounted on said flange concentric to the mixer section and forming an air chamber in communication through said iiange with a source of air supply through the central portion of the mixer section, and havingits outer edge overhanging the upper ends of the tubes of said mixer section to cooperate therewith to form a lateral flame discharge slot and itself having a lateral air discharge slot above said ame discharge slot.
2. In a gas burner comprising a gas supply manifold with an annular series of burner spuds on its top, a ring form of burner section mounted on said manifold and having mixer tubes in register with said spuds, a supplemental air dis-v charge section mounted on the top of said mixer section and having spaced bottom and top plates cooperating to form an alr chamber, and a lateral air discharge slot around the side edge of said chamber, said lower plate overhanging the upper ends of the mixer tubes of said mixer section and cooperating therewith to form a lateral flame discharge slot below said air discharge slot, said air chamber being in communication with and receiving its air supply through the space within said mixer ring.
3. A gas burner comprising a gas supply manlfold section of ring form having an annular series of burner spuds in its top, a ring form of mixture section mounted on said manifold section and having an annular series of mixer tubes in register with said spuds, and a supplemental air discharge section mounted on the top of said mixer section and overhanging the mixer tubes of the mixer section to laterally deflect and be heated by a flame rising from said mixer section, said air discharge section having an air chamber in air supply communication with the interior of the mixer section through its top and having an annular side discharge slot for directing a stream of air laterally into a ame rising from said mixer section.
4. A gas burner comprising a gas supply manifold section of ring form with an annular series of burner spuds in its top, a mixer section com# prising an annular series of mixer tubes mounted on the manifold section in register with said spuds and having connecting webs therebetween, said mixer section also having at its upper inner edge an annular flange forming a center opening in communication with the interior space of the mixer section, a supplemental air discharge section mounted on said iiange and forming an air chamber with its bottom open to said flange opening to receive air therethrough and having its side edge provided with an annular slot for discharging air laterally into a llame rising from the mixer section, said air section having its bottom overhanging the upper, outer edge portion of the mixer section in spaced relation thereto to outwardly deflect the mixture discharging from said xmixer tubes, and means securing the sectionsin assembled relation.
5. A gas burner comprising a gas supply manifold having a series of gas discharge orices in its top arranged around a common point, a mixer section mounted on said manifold and having mixer tubes in register at their lower ends with said orifices and having their upper ends open, said section having an air passage upward therethrough, a hollow supplemental air discharge section mounted on the top of said mixer section in overhanging relation to the open upper ends of said tubes and cooperating with the mixer section to effect a laterally directed mixture discharge from said tubes, said air discharge section receiving its air supply from said air passage and having provision at its side edge to direct air laterally into the burning mixture discharging from said mixer section.
6. A gas burner having an endless gas supply manifold with a series of gas discharge orifices in its top, an endless mixer section mounted on said manifold and having a series of mixer tubes in register at their lower ends with said orifices with their upper ends open, said tubes having their sides connected to combine to form an air passage upward through the mixer section, a deector plate mounted on the upper end of the mixer section in overhanging vertically spaced relation to the open ends of said tubes to cooperate therewith to discharge a mixture laterally from the upper ends of the tubes, a top plate mounted over said deflector plate to cooperate therewith to form a hollow air chamber with provision at the side edge for discharging air laterally into the burning mixture rising from said tubes around said deflector plate, said air chamber having communication at its bottom with the interior air space of the mixing section.
7. A gas burner comprising a ring form of gas supply manifold section with a series of gas discharge orifices in its top, a mixer section seated on the manifold section and having a series of mixer tubes in register with said orices with their upper ends open, said mixer section forming an interior air space open at its lower end, and a supplemental air discharge section mounted over the mixer section in overhanging relation to the upper open ends of said tubes and cooperating therewith to effect a lateral mixture discharge, said supplemental section forming a chamber in communication 'through its bottom with said air space and having provision at its side edge to discharge air laterally into the mixture discharging from said mixer section.
8. A gas burner comprising a gas supply section, a mixer section, a hollow supplemental air discharge section mounted in successive order one on top of another, said mixer section having a plurality of mixer tubes arranged around a common point, being open at their tops, and receiving their gas supply from said supply section and cooperating to form an air passage upward through the mixer section, said air discharge section overhanging the upper open ends of said mixer section tubes and cooperating therewith to discharge the gas mixture laterally therefrom, said air section also having provision to take its air supply from said passage and also having provision around its side edge for discharging air laterally into the gas mixture discharging from the mixer section.
9. A gas burner comprising a gas supply manifold of ring form having an annular series of gas discharge orifices in its top, a ring form of mixer section mounted on said manifold and having an annular series of mixer tubes in register at their lower ends with said orices and having their upper ends open, a hollow supplemental air discharge section mounted on said mixer section and cooperating with the upper open ends of said mixer tubes to effect a lateral discharge of mixture therefrom, said air discharge section having its interior in communication with a source of airsupply through the mixer section and having provision at its side edge for discharging air'laterally therefrom into the burning mixture rising from said mixer section.
