IMPROVEMENT IN PAVING-BLOCKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 214,383, dated April 15, 1879; application filed January 17, 1879.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FREDERICK GEIB, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paving-Blocks and I do hereby declare that the following'is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved street-pavement. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same, and Figs. 3 and 4 are modifications thereof in detail.

The same part in the figures is denoted by the same letter.

This invention appertains to certain improvements in street-pavements; and it consists in the detailed construction of the blocks constituting, with a suitable bedding and filling, the same, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, A refers to a bedding of sand or fine gravel, or of both, which is laid upon an even surface previously prepared. B B are blocks, made or molded of clay in the same manner as ordinary bricks used in buildings. Each individual blockin its general contour rectangular-is provided in one side with a longitudinal groove, 1), triangular or otherwise in shape, and upon its other side with a projection, b, similar in construction, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.

By this construction it will be seen that the blocks can be laid quickly and easily at the same level, and will be prevented from sinking one below the other or rising one above the other.

The lower half or section of each block is of a greater width than its upper half or section b about three-eighths of an inch, in order to provide the same size space between the upper surface of the blocks, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, which space is about two inches in depth, and packed or filled with sand, fine gravel, or other material, as at cl.

The bottoms of the blocks are molded with grooves b, triangular or of other shape, to

serve to enable the moisture or water to more readily escape during the drying and hardening of the blocks.

In Figs. 3 and 4 are shown blocks 0, answering to the blocks B, and having, one an enlarged upper surface, providing shoulders c, and the other an enlarged lower surface, forming shoulders 0', which, when the said blocks 0 are put together, abut against each other, and thus serve in the same capacity as the grooves and projections I) b of the blocks B, the functions of which are above set forth.

In Fig. 4 the bottom of one of the blocks 0 is shown provided with a groove, 0 unlike the groove 1) of the blocks Bin having its ends closed, as at 0 same figure, which will equally answer the same purpose as said groove b already stated.

I am aware that an intermediate key-filling of concrete, which passes from the surface of the pavement below angles in the adjoining faces of paving-blocks, is not new.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- 1. In a street-pavement, the block B, having in one side a groove, 1), and upon the other side a projection, 11 with bottom groove, b substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a street-pavement, the block B, havin g in one side a groove, b, and upon the other side a projection, 0 which interlock and form a space from the point where they interlock to the surface of the pavement, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. A street-pavement consisting of the bedding A and blocks B B, having their upper surfaces or halves reduced to provide spaces between them, and provided in one side with grooves 11, and upon their opposite sides with projections b, which interlock and form a space from the point where they interlock to the surface of the pavement, with or without grooved bottoms, and filling d, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose indicated.
