Description

FIG. 5
ATTORNEY.
Patented Jan. 10, 1939 PATENT OFFICE FURNITURE CONSTRUCTION Werner E. Olarin, Muncie, Ind., assignor to The Durham Manufacturing Company,
M uncie,
Ind., a corporation of Indiana Application July 31, 1937, Serial No. 156,771 2 Claims. (01. 311-113) This invention relates to improvements in corner construction of frame structures for articles of furniture such as tables and the like.
Advantages to be desired in construction of the above description are, that it may be of knockdown type; that the parts thereof may be economical of manufacture, and capable of being easily assembled and secured together by the exercise of only ordinary skill; and that the construction so effected may be neat in appearance,
strong and durable.
The above named advantages, as well as other benefits which will become apparent as the specification of my invention proceeds, are accomplished by, and my invention is embodied in the new construction, combination and arrangement of parts described in the following specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
The several parts of the invention are identified by suitable characters of reference applied to them in the different views in the drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my invention in a form of embodiment intended for table construction.
In this view a portion of the obverse frame member is broken away.
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 2--2 and in the direction of arrow 2 in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view illustrating the appearance of a table structure wherein the corner construction of the form depicted in Figure 1 is used.
In the embodiment illustrated, the end of each of the side rails I and 2 is finished at a right angle. Spaced from the end of and extending across the inner surface of each of the rails is a transverse groove 4.
An abutment member 6 made of stout plate metal is of right angle formation in cross section and it is of length equivalent to the width of the rail. The edge portion of each leg of said abutment member is turned outwardly to constitute a 45 ledge 1. 8 designates a binder member and which is of formation in cross section to engage the proximate ends of the rails. It consists of a stout metal plate of right angle formation, and it is of the same length as the abutment member 6 and 50 each leg thereof is turned outwardly to constitute a ledge 9. The said binder member is provided with spaced holes I0 through which securing bolts 12 are passed. Similarly, holes I4 are provided in the abutment member 6. Each of the 5; legs I6 is of suitably finished tubular structure.
and is provided with spaced holes in which said bolts 12 are received.
The relative positions of the several parts, in their assembled status, are as depicted in Figure 2. The frame members or rails having been dis- 5 posed with their ends in proximate position the abutment member having been placed in position with its ledges within the grooves 4, the hinder member 8 being in place with its ledges at the exterior corners of the rails, and the leg being 10 in place, the bolts l2 are inserted at the holes therefor, and are passed through the leg, the binder member, and the abutment member. Upon screwing home the nut 18, the abutment member, the binder member and the leg are drawn 15 toward each other and, whereby the frame members and leg are securely united.
The mechanical operations in processing the several parts are extremely simple and there is such accuracy or coordination, that when the 202 said parts are united as above described, the construction is secure and dependable. The invention is effective in structural requirements wherein it is desired that the leg member may constitute the corner portion of the exterior of the 25 structure, as depicted in Figures 2 and 3.
The ends of the rails are out at a right angle. The binder member is similar to the abutment member, and its ledges engage the edge portions of the outer corners of the said rails. The bolts serve to draw the abutment member and binder member toward each other and to hold them in tightened engagement with the end portions of the frame members whereby the said frame members, abutment member and binder member are securely united.
Whereas I have shown my invention as applied to construction wherein the frame members are in right anglerelation, the table structure therefore being square in plan, I wish it to be understood that the invention is applicable to constructions wherein the frame members are disposed at an acute angle to each other, such as in structures of hexagonal or octagonal form in plan. Also that minor changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages; and that the invention is to be construed as of the breadth and scope as defined in the appended claims.
What I claim as my invention, is-
1. Corner construction for frame structures of the kind described, comprising frame members having squared ends and which are disposed at a right angle with their ends in proximate relation and each being provided with a transverse groove spaced from the end of its interior side, an abutment member right angular in cross section and each leg thereof having an out turned ledge toengage the anterior corner of the adjacent frame member, a leg member of circular formation in cross: section and which is seated in the crotch of said binder member, and bolts passed through said leg member, abutment member and binder member, to draw the said three members to and to hold them in united relation with each other and with the said frame members.
2. Corner construction for frame structures of the kind described, comprising frame members angularly disposed with their ends in proximate relation and each of said frame members being provided with a transverse groove spaced from the end of its interior side, an abutment member angular in cross section and each leg of same having an outturned ledge to be received in the groove of the adjacent frame member, a tubular leg member, a binder member angular in cross: section and each leg of same having an outturned flange to engage an outturned corner of the adjacent frame member, and means to draw the abutment member, binder member, and leg member into alignment and to hold them in tightened coordinated relation with the end portions of said frame members.
