This invention relates to vacuum cleaner brushes.

The general object of the invention is toprovide a novel detachable vacuum cleaner brush..

A more specific object of the invention is to provide a vacuum cleaner brush which is mounted in a novel manner on a vacuum cleaner nozzle.

Another object of the invention is to provide a swivelly mounted vacuum cleaner brush which includes a novel means for holding the brush in place. v

Other objects and the advantages of my invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a vacuum'cleaner showing my invention attached thereto;

Fig. 2 is a side elevation with parts in central section showing a brush embodying the features of my invention;

Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the brush;

Fig. 4 is asection taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 2;

Fig. 5 is a side elevation showing the nozzle with the brush removed; and

Fig. 6 is a sectional view through a modified form of brush.

Referring to the drawing by reference characters I have shown my invention as embodied in a vacuum cleaner which is indicated generally at I0. -As shown the cleaner l includes a .housing H in which a suitable motor and fan may be mounted. The housing is provided with a closure member |2 from which an ofiset conduit l3 extends. This conduit includes a swivel I4 to which one end of a hose I is secured. The hose is'also connected by a, swivel IE to a rigid handle l1.

The handle I! is detachably secured by a coupling member l8 to a swivel member l9 which has a flange thereon. This flange 20 has a plane .end face' 2| which engages a plane end 22 on a nozzle 23'. 4

A removable collar 24 surrounds the flange 20 and engages the face 22 and is secured ,in place by fastening means shown as screws 25. The collar 24 includes an inwardly directed flange 25 which engages the flange 2i. Theconstruction is such that the nozzle 23 is rotatable about the swivel member l9.

My improved brush is indicated generally at 30. This brush includes a body 3| which may be made of wood and which is elongated as shown in Fig. 3. The brush is provided with a rabbeted portion 32 which is of the same configuration as that of the end 33 of the nozzle 23. A resilient washer 34 is fitted in the rabbet 32 and is engaged by the end portion 33 of the nozzle 23 as shown in Fig. 4.

The body 3| of the brush has a pair of clamp members 35 pivotally secured thereon by screws 36. These clamp members 35 include'finger engaging portions 31 beneath which engaging faces 38 are disposed. These engaging surifaces 38 engage a portion 39 on the nozzle 23 as shown in Fig. 2. The construction is such that when the clamp members 35 are turned away from 20 the nozzle the latter may be removed from the brush.

The brush is provided with a central aperture 40 which connects with a tapering elongated longitudinal groove 4| as shown in Fig. 2. The 2 bristles 42 of the brush surround the aperture 4| and are arranged in the base of the rabbet 43.

The periphery-of the body 3| is providedwith a groove 44 which receives a flange 4 on a rubber guard or bumper 46 which extends entirely above the brush.

In use the motor in the cleaner is started and the. operator moves the brush over the surface to be cleaned. The brush lhosens the dirt which'is drawn into the dust bag in the cleaner. Due to the swivel action of the nozzle the brush may be moved into places otherwise inaccessible. When it is desired to use a rigid brush the, screw 21 is tightened. When the operator wishes to remove the brush 23 the clamp members are released and the nozzle removed. The nozzle may be then used without the brush. f

In Fig. 6 I show a modification of my invention which includes a brush 50 haw'ng a central passageway 5|. The brush 5ll is provided with bristles 52 arrangedabout the passageway 5| and cleaner brush which can be readilymanufa tured and which is highly. eilicient in use.

Having thus described my invention, I claim: For. use, with a vacuum cleaner, a combined brush member and nozzle member, said nozzle member having a peripheral flange thereabout.

said flange including a downwardly extending edge portion, said brush member including a body having a rabbeted portion therein receiving said flange, said flange and said rabbeted portion having parallel sides and like semi-circular ends whereby theiposition of the brush may be reversed, said rabbeted portion having a flat lower face, a gasket engaging said face, said downwardly extending edge portion on said flange engaging the outer portion of said gasket, a pair of metal clamping members pivotally mounted on said brush member at each end thereof, each of said clamping members including an upwardly directed finger engageable portion and having a lower face to engage the nozzle member, said nozzle member having notched portions thereon receiving said clamping members.
