Description

Patented Jan. 1%, 1939 STATES UNIT PATENT OFFICE SOLID, STICKLHIE SHAVING PREPARATION York, N. Y.
No Drawing. Application January 17, 1935, Serial No. 2,202. In Germany February 23, 1934 8 Claims.
There is already known a process for the making of shaving and washing means by which on the. one hand stabilized hydrogenperoxide-carbamide and on the other soap powder, if necessary blended with a catalyzer, are compressed into solid masses, whereof both being insulated by an intermediate layer, are united in a convenient form. I
But such a shaving means is practically not applicable, since for the beginning of the development of oxygen a catalyzer is absolutely needed and the latter, for instance a catalyzing agent from animal organs or plants, continues with its action when the mass is wetted once and therefore the shaving stick becomes shortly decomposed and useless.
Our new invention on the contrary relates to a shaving means in solid form, especially in the shape of a shaving stick evolving oxygen ar'l containing no admixed catalyzer, but the human skin, with which the shaving stick comes in contact during the shaving operation, acts as a catalyzer. The development of oxygen therefore takes place only during the use of the shaving stick and is stopped immediately after.
Our invention has for its object a shaving means evolving oxygen, in which solid substances evolvingoxygen, particularly peroxides of the alkalies and 'of the alkaline earths f. i. magnesium peroxide are compressed with one or with several fillers and with a binding agent into cakes or sticks with a nonporous surface, whereby conveniently a water soluble filler and an hygro scopic substance come simultaneously into use. The binding agent serves to render mouldable the shaving material; the object 'of the Water soluble filler is to facilitate the access of water to the shaving means; the moisture absorbing filler serves to suppress the action of the water immediately after use.
The peroxides of the alkaliesandof the alkaline earths inthe solid or semisolid state are known as depilating agents. They served then for the permanent decomposition or dissolution of the air substance. But in this form they were not fit for shaving, since with their daily use for shaving a strong irritation of the skin was unavoidable. Furthermore when shaving it is impracticable to affect the hair substance, especially the roots of the hair, since with the beard, fashion changing the new formation of a beard must remain possible. It is surprising to state, that by applying the peroxides of the alkalies or of the alkaline earths especially of magnesium after the manner of our invention, this disadvantage is prevented.
After our invention to the peroxides of the alkalies and of the alkaline earths f. i. of magnesium also the stabilized hydrogenperoxide-carbamide, named Perhydrite"--in itself known for the same purpose-may be added and conveniently at a relative small percentage. Thereby the quantity of oxygen evolved is increased when the shaving stick is used, without need to admix 10 any catalyzer. The development of oxygen initiated by the peroxides of the alkaline earths and the like, apparently acts in the same sense on theperhydrite. Our invention makes it possible to produce a shaving means without the use of l fats or fatty products, particularly soap.
Example, which will be understood to be merely illustrative:
(l) 1000 gs. of magnesium peroxide most finely powdered are mixed at room temperature with 200 gs. of triturated-sugar of milk, 50 gs. of gum arabic and 5 gs. of hydrogenperoxide-carbamide. This mass is wetted with a little water and as usual pressed into sticks of about 20 gs. each f. i. by an automatic press. When applying the moistened skin is rubbed with the shaving stick; the material is spread by hand over the skin; promptly the shave may be made without brush and without employment of hot water. In case of an injury to the skin the substance has a disin- 'fecting and styptic efiect.
(2) 1500 gs. of magnesium peroxide most finely powdered are mixed at room temperature with 60 gs. hydrogenperoxide-carbamide, 300 gs. of gum arabic as a binder and 3500 gs. of carbonate 3 of magnesium as a .water absorbing filler; furthermore 200 gs. of sugar of milk are added as a soluble binder. To this mass is conveniently admixed any agent promoting its slipping .over the skin f. i. talcum powder or, if it is not indis- 40 pensable to avoid fatty products, sodium stearate in the quantity of 200 gs. Scents may be added if agreeable.
When applying, the moistened skin is rubbed with the shaving means. The shave can be made after a short time, about 2030 seconds, whereby conveniently the substance is washed away before.
We declare that what we claim is:
1. A normally stable, non-lathering shaving preparation in solid stick-like form capable of direct application to the moistened skin comprising an intimate mixture of a staple oxygenproducing substance, a binder, and a water soluble filler serving to facilitate the access of water to the said oxygen-producing substance when the shaving means is moistened, said oxygen-producing substance being present in amount capable of conditioning the beard for shaving by applying the preparation for a short period oi. time and then washing away before shaving.
2. A normally stable, non-lathering shaving preparation in solid stick-like form capable of direct application to the moistened skin comprisingan intimate compressed mixture of an alkaline earth peroxide, a binder, a water soluble filler serving to facilitate the access of water to the peroxide when the shaving means is moistened, and a moisture-absorbing filler serving to suppress the action of water immediately after use of the preparation, said peroxide being present in amount capable, of conditioning the beard'ior 7 shaving by applying the preparation for a short period of time and then washing away before sharing.
3. The composition of claim 1 which has added thereto a relatively small amount oif stabilized I hydrogen-peroxide-carbamide.
4. The composition of claim 1 in which the peroxide is present in amount at least 25% 01 the composition.
5. A normally stable, non-lathering shaving preparation in solid stick-like iorm capable or prising an intimate compressed mixture of mas 'nesium peroxide, gum arabic. sugar of milk am magnesium carbonate, said peroxide being prw ent in amount capable of conditioning the been for shaving by applying the preparation for 1 short period of time and then washing away heron "ing an intimate mixture or the following in gradients occurring in approximately the indi cated proportions:
