IMPROVEM ENT IN STENCH-TRAPS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,288, dated April 15, 1879; application filed February 13, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS J. FALES, of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in stench-Traps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

I This invention relates to stench-traps arranged and constructed to receive the refuse from the various water-closets, &c., of a building; and consists in providing the same with a funnel-shaped deflector, arranged over the drain-pipe leading therefrom, so as to catch the ascending gases and direct them into an exhaust pipe, the said trap being so 0011- structed that no refuse can be retained above said drain-pipe.

The accompanying drawing represents a ver-- tical central section through my stench-trap and the attached parts.

A designates a general sewage-receptacle, into which empty pipes a a coming from the several Waterclosets and wash-basins of a building, and from which the waste water, sewage, &c., pass through waste-pipe B, having the usual goose-neck water seal b. This receptacle is shown as having curved sides and somewhat approximating an inverted conoidal form.

' It may, however, be made octagonal or in any other suitable shape. Its sides should be inclined downward, so that the matter discharged into it will not adhere to its sides, but pass downward to waste-pipe B.

O designates a funnel-shaped deflector, flarin g outwardly and downwardly from a central exhaust-pipe, D, which enters the top of receptacle A. It extends outwardly and downwardly so far as to leave only space enough between its edge and the inner face of the receptacle A for the downward passage of the sewage-liquid, &c.

The gases which escape from the sewer and waste-pipe B through water seal 1) into the bot tom of receptacle A cannot reach any one of pipes a, but are deflected by deflector G into exhaust-pipe D and pass up through it out of the building without causing any stench therein.

Any form of blower or other means of exhaust may be employed in the upper part of exhaust-pipe D to aid this action, but such device is not indispensable. The receptacle A may be supported in any convenient way or attached to a cellar-wall, if preferred. Its location may be varied, as may also the number of inlet-pipes a and the arrangement of some of the devices, without affecting the operation of my stench-trap. It makes separate stenchtraps for each pipe (it unnecessary.

I am aware that receptacles with stenchtraps have heretofore been employed to receive the discharges of several soil-pipes, and also that stench-traps have been provided with deflectors having somewhat the shape of a funnel for directin g the gases into a ventilatingpipe.

Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A general stench-trap adapted to receive the waste from a number of water-closets or basins, and provided with a funnel-like deflector, which is arranged so that there shall be no water seal above or on one side of it, and that it will direct them into a single outlet, substantially as set forth.

2. A general stench-trap having its sides inclined to the drain-pipe, so as to prevent the lodgment of refuse above said drain pipe, and provided with a funnel-shaped deflector adapted to direct all gases arising therefrom into the exhaust-pipe, substantially as setforth.

3. The combination of receptacle A with funnel-shaped deflector G, inlet-pipes a a, drain-pipe B, and exhaust-pipe D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
