Description

W. R. AKANS Jan. 3, ,1939.
VALVE GRINDER Filed July 8, 1958 INVENTOR A KJILS fifimn Patented Jan. 3, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
My invention relates to valve grinders and has for an object the provision of a device particularly adapted for use in regrinding worn valve seats and which may be employed for use on valves embodying fiat valve seats or tapered valve seats.
My invention further comprises a valve grinder embodying means for detachably connecting suitable guide members to prevent displacement of the grinder when same is being rotated, the guide members being designed to conform' to the aligning means provided on the valves being worked upon.
My invention further contemplates the provision of a valve grinder having replaceable grinding discs, together with suitable fastening means permitting worn discs to be readily removed and replaced by new discs.
My invention further contemplates the provision of a valve grinder that can be rotated by means of an ordinary screw driver to grind the valve seats and which can be operated by those not skilled in this art with perfect results.
My invention further contemplates the provision of a valve grinder which may be sold for ten or fifteen cents and in various sizes and designs. Due to the simplicity of design and inexpensiveness of construction, the valve grinder may be purchased'by individual users for simple operations and then discarded; whereas, it has heretofore been necessary to either employ high-priced mechanics to regrind the valve seats or else to replace the worn valves With new valves.
My invention embodies other novel features, details of construction and arrangement of parts which are hereinafter set forth in the specification and claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming part thereof, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view showing one form of my improved valve grinder;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken along the line II-II of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a detail side elevational view showing one form of guide member for attachment to the grinder for use in grinding tapered valve seats on internal combustion engines;
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view showing a modified form of my invention in which the valve grinder is provided with a fiat grinding face and a tapered grinding surface;
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view showin another modified form of my invention adapted for use in grinding flat valve seats;
Fig. 6 is a side elevational view showing the grinder illustrated in Fig. 5 in operating position and having the guide member shown in Fig. 7 attached thereto; 7
Fig. '7 is a side elevational view showing a modified form of guide member employed in grinding fiat valve seats; and V Fig. 8 is a transverse sectional view showing a modified form of clamping screw for the grinding discs.
Referring now to the drawing for a better understanding of my invention and more particu- 10 larly to the form illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3, I show a valve seat grinder comprising a body portion II which may be formed of any suitable material and formed in two halves l2 and I3. The body portion is provided with a central aperture hi to receive a bolt [6 which is slotted at [1 and Hi to receive a screw driver l9 and is threaded at 2| to receive a locking nut 22. This form of grinder is formed with two tapered working faces 23 and 24 adapted to receive cup-shaped abrasive discs 26 and 21 which are held in position by means of Washers 28. The working faces 23 and 24 are tapered to correspond with the angle of the tapered valve seat to be finished. The disk 26 is provided with fine or small grain abrasive material to provide a polished finish on the valve seat; and the disk 27 is provided with coarse grains of abrasive material to form a rough finish.
In Fig. 3 I show a dotted outline of a valve seat 3] of the kind employed in internal combustion engines. In regrinding this type of valve it is necessary that the valve seat be in alignment with the axis of the valve stem of the tappet valve employed therewith, so I have provided a guide finger 32 which is threaded at 33 to engage the threads 34 provided on the inside of the bolt I6.
In Fig. 4 I show a modified form of my invention in which one of the halves 12 or I3 of the body portion H is employed to provide a combination tapered working face and fiat Working face 36. A fiat abrasive disk 31 is secured on the fiat working surface by means of a washer 38 and a bolt 39 which is shown to be shorter than the bolt IE but is otherwise similar thereto in all respects.
In Figs. 5 and 6 I show another form of my invention comprising a body portion 4| having 50 two flat working surfaces 42 and 43 adapted to receive fiat abrasive discs 44 and 45 which are held in position by means of washers 46 and a bolt 39. This type of grinder is adapted for regrinding fiat valve seats 41, and the discs 44 and 45 are of the rough finish and fine finish types, respectively.
In Fig. '7 I show a modified form of guide mem ber 51 comprising a body portion 52 and a stem 53 which is threaded at 54 for engagement in the threads 34 of the bolts 16 or 39.
In Fig. 8 I show a modified form of bolt 56 comprising a male portion 51 and a female portion 58 which are threaded at 59 and BI, respectively, for engagement with each other. This type of bolt may be employed in place of the bolts H5 or 39 and is threaded at 62 to receive either of the guide members 32 or 5|.
While I have shown my invention in several forms it is obvious to those skilled in the art that it is not so limited but is susceptible of various changes and modifications without departing from the spirit thereof; and I desire, therefore, that only such changes and limitations shall be placed thereupon as are imposed by the prior art.
'I claim:
1. In a grinding device, a body portion having a pair Of working faces disposed for grinding valve seats, an abrasive disk provided on each working face, means defining a centrally disposed aperture in the body portion, a bolt positioned in said aperture to clamp the abrasive disks in position on their respective working faces, and means defining sockets in opposite ends of the bolt to receive a driving tool.
2. In a grinding device, a body portion having a pair of working faces disposed for grinding valve seats, an abrasive disk provided on each working face, a washer disposed on the outer side of each abrasive disk, means defining a centrally disposed aperture in the body portion, a bolt p0- sitioned in said aperture to engage said washers to clamp the abrasive disks in position on their respective working faces, and means defining sockets in opposite ends of the bolt to receive a driving tool.
3. In a grinding device, a body portion having a pair of working faces disposed. for grinding valve seats, an abrasive disk provided on each working face, a washer disposed on the outer side of each abrasive disk, means defining a centrally disposed aperture in the body portion, a bolt positioned in said aperture to engage said washers to clamp the abrasive disks in position on their respective working faces, means defining a. threaded aperture extending centrally through said bolt, a threaded guide member for engagement in said threaded aperture, and means defining sockets in opposite ends of the bolt to receive a driving tool.
