REFACING- TOOL.
Application filed. April 20, 1921.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SEAMAN D. FiLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Refacing Tools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in refacing tools, and more particularly to that class or type which are adapted to reclaim or reface worn or imperfect valve parts such as the seats or faces of the ordinary poppet valves of internal combustion engines.
The present embodiment of the invention is particularly designed and adapted for use both as a reseating and refacing tool for such valves and with this end in view the invention embodies an improved interchangeable and reversible cutter carrying head together with a detachable spindle, the latter forming a driving spindle when the tool is used as a reseating tool and a drive for the valve stem when used as a valve refacing tool.
facture, and eflicient in use.
A further and very important object is the provision of an improved reversible head having integral cutters on one side shaped to reseat an ordinary valve seat and provided on the opposite side with cutters shaped to receive and reface an ordinary valve of the type indicated.
A still further object is the provision of an improved reversible head of such shape that the same together with its improved cutters may be formed either as a drop forging or as a die casting.
lVith the above mentioned and other ends in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in one of its embodiments in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1., is a side elevation of the improved tool having its parts assembled for and equipped with an ordinary valve head and stem for use as a valve refacing' tool.
F ig. 2, a longitudinal sectional view, part- Serial No. 462,853.
ly in side elevation, and illustrating more particularly the connection between the reversible head and spindle and the use of the latter as a guide for the valve stem in driving the latter together with the head in the refacing operation.
Fig. 3, a plan view of the improved reversible cutter head, detached, and illustrating more particularly the form and arrangement of the reseating cutter.
Fig. 4, a similar view of the same illustrating in particular the form and arrangement of the improved valve head refacing cutter.
Fig. 5, a view of the improved tool in use as a reseating tool in connection with the ordinary valve seat of an internal combustion engine.
Fig. 6, a side elevation partly in section of the detachable spindle and pilot stem assembled, the reversible detachable head being detached.
Similar numerals of reference designate like parts throughout all the figures of the drawings.
The improved tool comprises a reversible cutter carrier or head 1, of substantially dish-shape in cross section as shown most clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings, said head 1, being provided on one side with a plurality of cutters 1*, having their edges arranged to conform to the proper contour of the valve seat to be refaced. The cutter head 1, is provided with a plurality of cutters 1*, having their edges arranged to receive and reface the valve head 2, when used as a refacing tool as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.
As a means of detachably securing the head 1, in either of its reversed positions for use either as a refacer or reseater as hereinafter described, the head 1, is provided with a central opening 1, adapted to receive the stem portion 3 of a spindle 3. As a means of securing the spindle 3, in either of the two positions of the head 1 (see Figs. 2 and 5), the stem portion 3, is exteriorly threaded and provided with a clamping nut 3 The threads on the reduced portion 3 are arranged in a reverse direction to the direction of the rotation of the spindle 3, when used as a driving spindle as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings so that the tension will securely draw up the nut 3 As a means of driving or rotating the spindle 3, when the tool is used in reseating a valve, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, the top portion of the spindle is provided with a cross opening adapted to receive a cross bar handle 4.
As a means of adapting the spindle 3, to removably receive a pilot spindle 5, when used as a reseating tool as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, or to receive the stem 2, of the valve when used as av valve refacing tool as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the spindle 3, is provided with a central longitudinally extending opening 3, the latter forming a guide for the valve stem 2, when the latter is rotated with the valve head 2, in the refacing operation. When the pilot spindle 5, is mounted in the lower end of the spindle 3, it is removably retained therein by means of a retaining screw 6*, threaded in a threaded opening at one side and entering an annular groove 5", in the upper end of the pilot spindle as shown most clearly in Fig. 6, of the drawings.
When it is desired to use the tool as a refacer for, valves, the head 1, is reverse from the position shown in Fig. 5, of the drawings, to that shown in Fig. 1, of the drawings, the handle 4, being removed, and the valve stem 2*, being mounted in the opening 3, of the spindle 3, thereby bringing the head 2, into contact with the cutters 1".
As a means of giving any desired tension between the valve head 2, and cutters 1", a coiled spring 6, is mounted on one end of the valve stem and interposed between the upper end of the spindle 3, and the removable driving handle 7, the latter being secured in any desiredposit-ion with respect to its tension upon the spring by means of a clamping screw 7 The form of the cutter carrier or head 1 is such that it may be readily formed as a drop forging after which the cutters 1 and 1", may be hardened to the desired degree and thereafter sharpened from time to time as desired, or the cutter carrier or head 1, may be formed as a suitable casting die.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of my invention. will be readily understood.
Having thus described one of the embodiments of my invention, without having attempted to set forth all the forms in which it may be made, or all the modes of its use, what I claim and desire to'secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. In a refacing tool, a reversible cutter head, a hollow reversible spindle, means for detachably securing the latter to said cutter head, and a pilot spindle removably mounted in said spindle when saidv cutter head is used as a reseating tool.
2. In a refacing tool, a carrier head'having cutters on opposite sides and a central opening, and a spindle reversible therein and provided with an opening adapted to receive a valve stem in one position and a pilot spindle in the other.

with a central opening and a plurality of cutters shaped toreceive and reface the face side of av valve head or a valve seat, a spindle detachab-ly mounted in said opening and provided with a longitudinal opening adapted to receive a pilot stem or the stem of the valve to be refaced, and means for driving d said valve stem, when inserted,in the refacing 0 eration.
5. n a tool for refacing valve-parts, a disc-shaped head having on one side spirally arranged cutters for reseating, and provided on the opposite side with cutters having concave edges to receive the head of the valve to be refaced, and a sp-indledetachably secured to said-head and provided with a longitudinal opening extending through and receiving the stem of the valve to be refaced when used as a refacing tool and receiving a pilot spindle when used as a reseating tool.
6. In a tool for refacing valve parts, a concavo-convex shaped'head having a. central opening and provided on its convex side with spirally arranged cutters for reseating, and on its concave side with cutters havin their edges inclined inwardly to receive and form the bevel of the valve head to be refaced, and a hollow spindle secured in said opening of said head and adapted to receive and form a guide for the stem of the valve to be refaced when used as a refacing tool and receiving a pilot spindle at one end and provided with driving means at the other when used as a reseating tool.
7.- In a valve seating and refacing tool, a reversible head provided with valve reseating and refacing cutters, and a hollow spindle detachably connected to said head and adapted in one position to receive the stem 4. In a refacing tool, a head provided.

In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
SEAMAN D. FILSON.
