FRANCIS MAGUIRE, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CANDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,258, dated April 15, 1879 application filed January 17, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I FRANCIS MAGUIRE, of Cambridge, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts. have invented an Improvement in Candles, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in candles, chiefly such as are used in places of worship.
In church service there are certain occasions when candles are employed, the said candles sometimes being as long as thirty-four inches and about two inches in diameter. These candles are quite expensive to make, and are never burned continuously for such a length of time as to exhaust them, but are lighted at different times, becoming gradually shorter and shorter. It is a desideratum to have the candles substantially of full length each time they are lighted.
Before my invention this hasbeen effected by making the lighting end of the candle for a length of several inches removable or renewable, so as to preserve the main body of the candle.
The renewal of the tip or lighting end has been variously accomplished; and my invention consists in a new meansviz., by embedding in the main body of the candle a truncated device, having a finger or projection extendin gupwardly from such body, and adapted to hold a removable, separable, or renewable tip or lighting portion.
The invention also consists in an anchor, having prongs or flukes extending therefrom and connected with the wick, so as to secure said wick in the candle-tip and prevent the wick from burning completely to its lower end, and from melting down into the center of the candle below it.
Figure i represents, in side elevation and partial section, a portion of a candle embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 represents the wick-anchor in perspective.
The main part or base a of the candle, made of wax or other material of which candles are made, may or may not have a wick.
The tip or top part b of the candle is made separable from the main body part a. The said parts a and b are connected, as shown in this instance of my invention, by means of a connecting device, 0, the lower end of which is truncated, but which may be otherwise shaped, so as to be molded into the body a and there remain, a finger or projection, d, extended above the top of the body part, and preferably made conical, serving to receive upon and about it the lower end of the tip I), to hold the tip firmly but removably in place, as shown in Fig. 1.
The wick 6, beginning as usual at the top, is extended downward a certain distance, as herein shown, to a position at or near the lower end of the tip, where the said wick is provided with an anchor, e, which is firmly pinched upon the end of the wick, the anchor serving to prevent the descent of the extreme lower end of the wick below a certain fixed position. This anchor is provided with suitable prongs or legs f, extended laterally from the wick into the material of the candle-top.
I claim- 1. The described candle, composed of the separable tip I), the main portion a, and the connecting device shown, having the truncated portion a, embedded in part a, and the finger d, extending above part a and into the tip I), all as set forth.
2. A candle-wick in combination with an anchor, 6, having prongs f, substantially as described.
3. The anchor 0, adapted to be pinched upon the wick, and provided with legs or prongs projecting therefrom at different points, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANCIS MAGUIRE.
