'Ihis invention relates to ornamenting dies for use in producing ornamentations in or upon shoe uppers.
Objects of the invention are to provide an ornamenting die including a base supporting the ornamenting tools, in combination with means for supporting stripper plates in connection with the base provided with means for gaging and retaining shoe uppers of diierent styles and m forms and sizes; to provide releasable means for holding the stripper plates in connection with the base; to provide novel resilient devices for resiliently supporting the stripper plates in connection with and spaced above the base for downward movement when in operation; to provide varied forms of gage devices for attachment to the upper side of the stripper plates and having holes in registration with the holes through the stripper plates to permit the ornamenting tools f to be extended through the holes in the stripper plates and the registering holes in the gage supporting plates; and to provide improved means for positioning and holding the gage supporting plates in proper position on the stripper plate. i Another object of the invention is to provide improved resilient clamping devices for holding the shoe uppers clamped on the stripper plates.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description, reference being made to the annexed drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a top plan View of my improved ornamenting die having parts of a shoe upper mounted thereon.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View approximately on the irregular sectional line 2 2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the base and ornamenting tools, and illustrating also the retaining devices for holding the stripper plates in connection with the base.

The base of my improved ornamenting die cornprises a rigid member l having holes 4 therethrough near its side edges. The base member l has holes 5 which communicate with the vtubular 55 ornamenting die elements l rigidly attached to (Cl. 16de-93) said base member n and projecting upwardly therefrom. Thus, the parts cut out from the shoe uppers will be discharged through the tubular elements l into and through the holes 5.
The base member i is formed with wells or recesses 8 adapted to receive the heads 9 of pins lli, the upper ends of which are rigidly attached to a stripper plate l i. The heads Si ci" the pins it cooperate with the walls oi the wells 8 and constitute guide elements to guide the stripper plate i l in its movements. A washer l2 is mounted on each pin i5 and seats in a recess t3 in the upper side or the member i in communication with and of larger dia-meter than the adjacent well 3. As shown (Figs. i and 6) the heads t are of greater diameter than the pins i@ and will support and prevent the washers EZ from becoming detached from the pins when the stripper plate is out 01 engagement with the base i. Springs i5 encircle the pins til having their lower ends pressing against the Washers i2 and their upper ends pressing against the underside of the stripper plate l i. A number of these resilient supporting devices are provided, four of such devices being indicated in the drawings adjacent to the corners or" the base.
A number of guide pins it are attached to and project downwardly from the stripper plate it and are provided with enlarged lower portions il that operate in the holes li. The pins it constitute guide elements and cooperate with the' walls of the holes 4 and with the guides 9 to guide the stripper plate il in its movements. The upper ends of the enlarged portions il are in the form of shoulders i8.
A holding or latching plate it is connected with each end portion of the base by a pivot 2B, and has a downwardly bent flange 2! on its outer edge extended to provide a handle 22. The inner edge of each latch plate is formed with an arcuate notch 23 (Figs. l and 3) adapted to receive the adjacent pin i@ above the shoulder I8, and with an arcuate notch B! adapted to receive the stem 25 of a holding member below the head 2t of said holding member.
It will now be apparent that the stripper plate is assembled in connection with the base and ornamenting dies and tools by extending the pins It downwardly through the holes it and into the Wells 8 until the Washers l2 are seated in the bottoms of the recesses i3, the enlargements l'i of the pins l@ being extended into the holes t. The latch plates I9 are then swung inwardly to engage over the shoulders i3 and under the heads 2t of the retaining devices 25. The stripper plate and CTI the parts supported thereby may easily be removed by swinging the plates I9 outwardly out of engagement with the pins I6, thereby permitting the stripper plate to be lifted from the base.
My invention also comprises gage supporting plates 21 and means for detachably securing them on the stripper plate. The stripper plates are formed with holes 28 through which the ornamenting dies or tools may extend when the stripper plates are pressed downwardly in use, and the gage supporting plates 21 are formed with holes 29 registering with the holes 28. Spaced gages 30 for different forms and sizes and shapes of parts of shoe uppers are attached to each supporting plate 21 by fasteners 3l and are designed and adapted to receive between them and to center and locate the parts 32 of shoe uppers. Each gage plate 21 supports a number of centering projections 33, which t into holes 3d formed in the stripper plate li and positively prevent any lateral displacement of the gage plate with respect to the stripper plate, and also function to locate the holes 29 in the gage plate in exact registration with the holes 28 in the stripper plate.
Each gage plate has therein a number of angularly disposed slots 35 in registration with angularly disposed slots 36 in the stripper plate, each of said slots 36 being provided at one end with an enlargement 31. A pin 3S extends through each slot 35 for sliding movements along said slot, and has on its upper end a head 39 and on its lower end a head "i0 of less diameter than the head 3S; and both of said heads are of greater diameter than the width of any part of the slot 35. The head 4B will pass through the enlargement 31 and engage under the stripper plate l i, but is of greater diameter than the width of the slot 36 and cannot pass through said slot. In assembling the gage plate in connection with the stripper plate, said gage plate is placed upon the stripper plate with the centering projections 33 engaged in the holes 34, and the heads 4G extending through the enlargements 31 of the slots 36. Then the heads 39 are manually engaged and the pins 38 are moved along the slots 35 and 36 to the ends of said slots. The heads 33 and 40 engage above and below the gage 21 and the stripper plate Il, respectively, and thereby securely clamp and hold the gage plate on the stripper plate, said pins 38 cooperating with the centering and holding projections 33 to prevent lateral displacement of the stripper plate with respect to the gage plate. The angular relationship of the slots 35 through the gage plate and the similar angular relationship of the slots 36 through the stripper plate prevent sliding movements of the gage plate along the stripper plate.
The forward portion of the stripper plate Il is provided with a pair of spaced openings 4| at the rear side of which a spring 122 is attached (Figs. l and 2). A spring clamp i3 has its forward end attached to the forward end of each of the springs 42, and its rear end provided with an upturned portion 4A to permit free sliding movement of a shoe upper part 32 thereunder. The springs 43 resiliently clamp the parts 32 of the shoe upper on and against the stripper plate Il.
It should now be apparent that this invention attains all of its intended objects and purposes eiciently and satisfactorily. The parts may be interchanged easily and rapidly so that different stripper plates may be applied to the same die base and different gage plates applied to the different stripper plates. The invention may be varied Within the scope of equivalent limits Without departure from the nature and principle thereof. I do not restrict myself in unessential particulars, but what I claim is:
1. An ornamenting die comprising a base having wells therein, shoulders in said base above the bottoms of said wells, die elements rigid with said base, a stripper plate, pins rigid with said stripper plate, heads on the lower ends of said pins extending into said Wells, washers on said pins seated on said shoulders, springs between said washers and said stripper plate supporting said stripper plate above said die elements, and releasable means holding said stripper plate in connection with said base.
2. In an ornamenting die comprising a base having shoulders therein and ornamenting die elements rigid with said base, a stripper plate, pins rigid with said stripper plate, enlarged heads on said pins projecting into said base below said shoulders, Washers on said pins seated on said shoulders, springs between said Washers and said stripper plate supporting said stripper plate above Said die elements, means holding said stripper plate in connection with said base, and means for attaching gages to said stripper plate.
- 3. An ornamenting die comprising a base, die elements supported by said base, holding plates pivoted to said base and movable to and from position to hold selected stripper plates in operative connection with said base, and holding members rigid with said base for holding said holding plates in rigid position.
4. An ornamenting die comprising a base, ornamenting die elements rigid with said base, a stripper plate in operative connection with said base and supported thereby, and releasable holding members pivoted to said base and movable to and from position to hold said stripper plate in operative connection with said base.
5. An ornamenting die comprising a base having die elements rigid therewith, a stripper plate, resilient supporting means supported by said stripper plate when said stripper plate is apart from said base, shoulders in said base for receiving and supporting said resilient supporting means, and latches releasably holding said stripper plate in operative connection with said base with said resilient supporting means on said shoulders.
6. In an ornamenting die for shoe uppers comprising die elements and a stripper plate supported for movement toward and from said die elements and having slots therein; a gage plate mounted on said stripper plate and having slots in registration with said slots through said stripper plate, gages in connection with said gage plate, and sliding fasteners supported by one of said plates and extending through said slots in said plates and movable from position in which said fasteners hold said gage plate rigid on said stripper plate to position to release said gage plate from said stripper plate.
7. In an ornamenting die for shoe uppers comprising die elements and a stripper plate supported for movement toward and from said die elements and having slots therein; a gage plate mounted on said stripper plate and having slots in registration with said slots through said stripper plate, gages in connection with said gage plate, sliding fasteners supported by one of said plates and extending through said slots in said plates and movable from position in which said fasteners hold said gage plate rigid on said stripper plate to position to releaseA said gage plate from said stripper plate, and resilient means supported by said stripper plate for holding parts of shoe uppers on said stripper and gage plates.
8. In an ornamenting die comprising die elements; a stripper plate having holes in vertical alinement with said die elements, latch plates for holding said stripper plate in cooperative relationship to said die elements, a gage plate mounted on said stripper plate for supporting shoe upper parts and having holes registering with the holes in said stripper plate, gages attached to said gage plate for gaging parts oi shoe uppers in proper position with respect to said die elements, and releasable means holding said gage plate on said stripper plate.
9. In an ornamenting die comprising die elements; a stripper plate, latch plates :for holding said stripper plate in cooperative relationship to said die elements, a gage plate mounted on said stripper plate, gages attached to said gage plate for gaging parts of shoe uppers in proper position with respect to said die elements, releasable means holding said gage plate on said stripiper plate, and resilient clamping devices supported by said stripper plate for holding parts of shoe uppers on said gage and stripper plates.
10. An ornamenting die comprising a base, die elements rigid with and projecting above said base, a stripper plate, pins rigid with said stripper plate and projecting into said base, shoulders on said pins, and holding plates movably supported by said base and being movable into and out oi' engagement with said shoulders on said pins.
11. An ornamenting die comprising a base having wells and holes therein, die elements attached to and projecting above said base, a stripper plate, pins on said stripper plate projecting into said wells, shoulders in said base above said wells, Washers mounted on said pins and seated on said shoulders, springs mounted on said pins between said Washers and said stripper plate and supporting said stripper plate in cooperative relationship to said die elements, pins on said stripper plate projecting into said holes, shoulders on said last named pins, and latches on said base movable into and out of engagement with said shoulders to hold said stripper plate in connection with said base.
12. An ornamenting die comprising a base, die elements rigid with and projecting above said base, a stripper plate, springs supporting said stripper plate above said die elements, means for supporting said springs in connection with said stripper plate when said stripper plate is apart from said base, and releasable latch devices holding said stripper plate in operative connection with said base.
13. In an ornamenting die comprising a base; die elements rigid with and projecting above said base, a stripper plate, springs supporting said stripper plate above said die elements, means for supporting said springs in connection with said stripper plate when` said stripper plate is apart from said base, releasable latch devices holding said stripper plate in operative connection with said base, and releasable means for holding selected gages in connection with said stripper plate.
lll. A stripper plate, pins rigid with and projecting downwardly from said stripper' plate, washers through which said pins extend for sliding movements, heads supporting said washers on said pins, and springs encircling said pins between said washers and said stripper plate.
l5. A stripper plate for an ornamenting die comprising a plate, pins rigid with and projecting downwardly from said plate, washers through which said pins extend for sliding movements, heads on said pins of greater diameter than said pins and of less diameter than said washers, and springs encircling said springs between said Washers and said stripper plate.
16. An ornamenting die comprising a base, ornamenting die elements attached to said base, a stripper plate, pins rigid with and projecting downwardly from said stripper plate into said base, shoulders formed on said pins, and retaining elements connected with said base for movement into and out oi engagement with said pins between said shoulders and said plate.
17. In an ornamenting die comprising rigid die elements, a stripper plate supported in cooperative relation to said die elements and having holes through which said die elements may be extended, a gage plate mounted on said stripper plate for supporting portions of shoe upper parts and having holes registering with the holes through said stripper plate, gages attached to said gage plate laterally beyond said holes therethrough, and means supported by one of said plates ior movement into and out of engagement with the other to hold said plates rigidly attached.
.18. In an ornamenting die, a stripper plate having slots therein, a gage plate having slots therein adapted to register with the slots in said stripper plate, fasteners mounted in the slots in one ci said plates and adapted to be extended through the slots in the other plate and being movable to position along said slots to hold the gage plate immovable upon the stripper plate, and means on said stripper plate i'or engaging and holding shoe upper parts in position to overlap said gage plate.
19. In an ornamenting die, in combination, a stripper plate, a gage plate, fasteners supported by one of said plates and being movable into and out oi engagement with the other plate to hold the gage plate superposed upon the stripper plate, a gage attached to said gage plate, and means attached to said stripper plate for holding a shoe upper part in contact with said gage and overlapping said gage plate.
