Description

kPatented Dec. 20, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE n mim CURLER Application February 17, 1938, Serial No. 190,911
2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in hairwaving devices and has particular reference to a hair curler of the type in which a pliable element risemployed for securing a curl in place during the 5 j setting thereof.
An object of the invention is to provide a hair curler of simple and practical construction which may be manufactured at a low cost, and wherein a clamping member associated with the mandrel of the device is mounted thereon and held in cooperative relation therewith in a novel manner.
The above and other objects Will appear more clearly from the following detailed description rwhen taken in connection with the accompanying rdrawing which illustrates a preferredembodiment of the inventive idea.
In the drawing:-
Figure l is a side elevation of the hair curler constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section therethrough, showing the curl-retaining member in its operative position.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary plan view, partly in section.
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Figure 2, and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the clamping arm and carrier member therefor.
kIn its preferred form, the hair curler is shown` as comprising a mandrel 6 made from a length of tubular, pliable material such as leather or the like. Extending through the opening 'I formed in ythe mandrel is a suitable length of coated wire constituting a curl-retaining member 8 which, whenin proper position in the mandrel, has both of its ends projecting from the ends of the mandrel suiiiciently to permit said ends to be bent over to 1 the operative or clamping positions shown in Figure 2, this bending of the ends of said member 8 being accomplished after a strand of hair has been wound upon the mandrel in the customary manner.
Associated with the mandrel 6 for pivotal movement relative thereto is a clamping arm 9 curved transversely so as to conform to the contour of the mandrel. Said arm is utilized to retain the end of a strand of hair between the same and the surface of the mandrel at the beginning of the winding operation and as said operation continues the coils of hair will hold the arm in position.
n A feature of the invention resides in the provision of a novel means for attaching the arm to the mandrel and supporting it in cooperative relation thereto. Said means consists of a carrier element, generally indicated by the numeral I0, to which the arm 9 is pivotally connected. Said carrier element III is preferably formed from a single length of wire bent at its ends to form a head I I, with the extremities of the wire engaged in an eye I2 formed at the end of the diagonal extension I3 of the arm 9. The intermediate portion of the wire of which the carrier III is made is bent upon itself to provide an elongated shank I4 the width of which is slightly greater than the diameter of the opening 1 in the mandrel. Said shank I4 is adapted for insertion into one end of the opening 1, after the member 8 has been eX- tended therethrough, and the inward movement of said shank into the mandrel is limited by engagement of the head II with theadjacent end of the mandrel. Due to the width of the shank, the same will frictionally engage the Wall of the opening 1 and thus retain the carrier element in its operative position. The pliable member 8 will also be engaged by the shank I4 and will be wedged thereby in the opening 'I so as to be prevented irom becoming accidentally displaced relative to the mandrel.
What is claimed is:
1. In a hair curler, a mandrel having an opening therethrough, a clamping arm cooperating with said mandrel, a carrier for said arm including an enlarged head providing a pivot for said arm, and further including a shank extending into said opening for frictional engagement with the wall thereof, and a pliable curl-retaining member extending through said opening and projecting from at least one end of the mandrel. 1
2. In a hair curler, a mandrel having an opening therethrough, a clamping arm cooperating with said mandrel, a carrier for said arm including a single length of wire bent at its ends to form a head'wider than the opening in said mandrel and providing a pivotal connection for said arm, said carrier having its intermediate portion further bent to form a shank of less width than the said head and insertible into said opening for frictional engagement with the Wall thereof, said head being engageable with the adjacent end of said mandrel to limit movement of said shank into said opening, and a pliable curl-retaining member extending through said opening and engageable with said shank.
