Application Marchi, 1938, Serial No. 194,462
2 Claims. (Cl. 299-150) My invention relates to improvements in hose The section 2 serves as a mounting for a valve nozzles and the particular object of the invention operating member adapted for functioning under is to equip a hose nozzle with means for closing impact with the ground and comprising an annuthe same when the nozzle is dropped onto the lus 2l! larger in diameter than the section 2 and 5 ground, noor or the like. surrounding the same, said annulus having radial 5 To the accomplishment of the above, and suborflat spokes 2l extending through circumferentially dinate objects presently appearing, a preferred spaced slots 22 provided in the rear edge of memembodiment of my invention has been illustrated er 5, Said SpokeS extending t0' an annular hub 23 in the accompanying drawings, treated in detail of smaller diameter than the inside of the section in the succeeding description, and deiined in the 2 and confined edgewise between the front and 10 claims appended hereto. rear members 5 and 6 for sliding movement there- In said drawingszagainst into and out of axial relation to said sec- Figure l is a view in side elevation of a hose tion, it being understood that the slots 22 are nozzle equipped according to my invention, properly proportioned to permit play of the spokes Figure 2 is a View in longitudinal section, under such movement of said hub. The rear section 2 has the permit the valve l5 to be moved to opening posiform of a cylindrical housing comprising a pair of tien by the Spring |3- On the Other hand if Said front and rear cup-like members 5 and 6 threadannulus 29 and hub 23 are moved out of such conedly secured together as at l, the front member 5 centric relation to the section 2 the ball I'I will having a front end wall S, an axial aperture 9, and be cammed forwardly by the cam parts 2l of dia 35 a circular series of larger apertures lll grouped phragm 25 and the valve I5 thereby moved into around the aperture 9. The rear member 6 has closing position relative to the bore A of section I.
an axial nipple II extending therefrom exteriorly The operation of my invention will be readily threaded, as at I2, for the attachment of the end understood from the foregoing. If the nozzle is of a hose I3 thereto. The section 2 is secured to dropped to the ground the annulus 26 will engage 40 the section I concentrically thereof by means of the same and under impact with the ground will screws I4 extending through the front wall of the be moved into eccentric relation to the member 2, member 5 and into the rear end of section I. in one direction or another, thereby similarly Within the chamber 3 is a conical valve I5 fast moving the hub 23 and eifecting closing of the upon the front end of a valve stem I6 slidably valve I5 in the manner already described. A tension spring I8 interposed spring I3. In the concentric position of the hub between the wall 8 and a pin I9 on the stem I6 23 relative to the section 2 water passes from the urges the latter rearwardly and the valve I5 into hose I3 through the apertures 28 in the diaphragm 5 opening poSition. 25, through the hub 23 and apertures I0 into the 55 'described valve and stem is such that upon forlarly moved to partition the socket 26 axially of chamber 3 and from chamber 3 by way of the bore i outwardly of the section I.
The foregoing Will, it is believed, suice to impart a clear understanding of my invention Without further explanation.
Manifestly my invention, as described, is susceptible of modification both as regards combinations of parts and features of construction and right is herein reserved to all such modifications falling Within the scope of the subjoined claims.
What I claim iszl. In a hose nozzle, a tubular discharge member having an axial bore therein, a normally open valve mounted on the rear end of said discharge member for movement axially of said bore into closing position relative thereto, and means for moving said valve into closing position comprising an annulus larger in diameter than said member and mounted on the rear end of said member for movement under impacts thereagainst laterally of the axis of said member, and
operating connections between said annulus and valve.
2. In a hose nozzle, a tubular front member having a discharge bore therein, a cylindrical housing member having front and rear walls, the latter provided With an axial nipple extending therefrom for the passage of Water therethrough into the housing, and the former being secured to the rear end of said front member and perforated for the passage of Water from said housing member into the bore of the front member, a valve mounted in said front Wall for movement axially of said bore into closing position relative thereto, said valve being normally open, means for moving the valve into closing position including an annulus surrounding said'housing member and movable under impacts thereagainst laterally of the axis of the housing member, and a valve camming device in said housing member operative by such movement of said annulus.
