B. B CARY FAN ASSEMBLY Dec. 6, 1938.
Filed Nov. 13, 1957 fleeaie/ 5 60/ Patented Dec. 6, 1938 v F UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FAN ASSEMBLY Beecher B. Cary, Jackson, Mich., assignor to Hayes Industries, Inc, Jackson, Mich., a corporation of Michigan Application November 13, 1937, Serial No. 174,387
6 Claims. (01. 170-173) This invention relates to cooling fans for auto spacing plate 9. The rivets 8 serve not only to motive engines and particularly, to a fan assemsecure the spacing plate 9 but also to connect bly designed to project the fan forwardly into a the two sets of blades 1. Disposed through the desired spaced relation with the radiator core. hub of the fan 6 are openings It) in alignment In the design of automotive engines it is rewith openings H in the spacing plate 9. Through quired for maximum cooling efliciency that the the aligned openings I and II project screws I2, fan be disposed within a predetermined minimum as shown particularly in Fig. 1, for securing the distance from the radiator core. Certain considfan assembly to the fan mounting 5. erations sometimes result in the fan of a parts The spacing plate 9 is annular in configura- 10 manufacturer, when secured to the engine fan tion, having a central opening l5. As disclosed 10 mounting of an automobile, being spaced further particularly in Figs. 3 and 4, the openings II and away from the radiator core than is desired for IE in the spacing plate 9 have drawn at the best operating practice. In the past, the fan has edges thereof annular axially extending, cylinbeen projected toward the radiator core in such drica] pacing portions I6 and [1, The spacing is a Case by forming the fan blades in Such a plate 9 is also provided with an annular border me! th t hey ar axially Offset from the hllbl8, which is axially ofiset from the outer face l9 Such a construction, however, is not desirable for of t spacing m t 9 t th 1a of th the reason that it not only increases the cost of inner ends f the annular Spacing portions 5 manufacture of fans, but also results in an unand n so t t inner face of th spacing plate desirable stressing of the fan blades due to the 9 may lie flat against the hub f the f n 5 as 20 moment created by the centrifugal force when Shown particularly in Fig 3 The spacing plate the fan is rotated thereby necessitating a strong- 9 is t provided t a fan mounting engage. and heavier ment surface l9, which is spaced away from the An Object of the present invention is to h hub of the fan a a distance equal to the axial mate the necessity of Offset fan blades by length of the annular spacing portions l6 and I1. 25 mg a spacing plate secured 9 t fan during From the foregoing description, it will be apmanufacture and Serving to posltlon a fan havmg parent that by the present invention it is possible linearly Opposed blades forwardly of the fan to space the fan 6 forwardly from the fan mountmolmtinging 5 a distance determined by the axial length Another oblect of the mventlon 15 to 'f' of the spacing portions l6 and ll of the spacing 30 a spacing plate having a plurality of devlees plate 9, and thus to have linearly aligned blades thereon o spacing the same from the e 1 in which, during rotation, no moment as the These and other Objects Will be apparent from result of centrifugal force is set up.
