Description

Dec. 6, 1938. A. B. MULL ET AL DISPLAY UNIT Filed Aug. 18, 1958 jive/dons Patented Dec. 6, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE nrsrmr UNIT of Wisconsin Application August 18, 1938, Serial No. 225,644
5 Claims.
This invention relates to a display unit which can be removably attached to any suitable supporting surface.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a display sheet carrying advertising matter or other indicia thereon, and which can be conveniently affixed to any supporting surface or object.
Other and further objects and details of the invention will be apparent from the following descriptions and accompanying drawing, wherein- I Figure 1 illustrates one embodiment of the invention suitable for use as a display card or tag,
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on lines 22 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a fragmental perspective view of the display unit showing the cover strip in partially peeled condition,
Figure 4 is a sectional view illustrating the display unit affixed to a supporting surface,
Figure 5 is a fragmental plan view of a modification of the invention, and
Figure 6 is a fragmental plan view of another modification of the invention.
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in Figure 1, wherein l2 indicates a display unit made of a stiff paper sheet or board. Any desired configuration may be given to the sheet depending upon the character of the use for which it is designed. The configuration illustrated in Figure 1 is adapted, for example, for use as a tag to be afiixed to an automobile panel for recording mileage, date of change of oil and grease, etc. One margin of the display unit is suitably cut and provided with a cut score line H) spaced away from the edge to'form a grasping tab II. The rear face of the display unit l2 and the rear face grasping tab ii are coated with a suitable pressure sensitive adhesive composition I5. For example, this composition may consist of a cohesive agent, an adhesive agent, a modifier, and a thermoplastic solvent therefor. The following composition, for example, is suitable for use on display'units made of cardboard:
Per cent by weight Rubber 15 Isobutylene polymer 15 Amorphous paraflin wax (M. P. F.) 19 Methyl abietate 25 Ester gum 25 Glycerine 0.5 Hydroquinoneuu;
The composition is preferably heated to about -200 F. and is applied to the base sheet by means of a roll or doctor blade heated to about 180-200 F. so as to spread a thin layer of the composition of suitable thickness on the base sheet. The base sheet is preferably supported on a heated roll coacting with the spreader roll and spaced away suiiiciently to permit the desired thickness of coating to be applied. After the adhesive coating is spread itis congealed by passing the web over a chilled roll and a cover strip is applied lightly thereto.
In order to protect the adhesive coating i5 prior to the use of the unit for attaching to any desired supporting surface, a peelable cover strip N is applied thereto. Such cover strip may be made of glassine, holland cloth, and the like which will adhere to the adhesive coating but will readily peel therefrom.
In using this display unit, the tab I l is grasped as shown in Figure 3 and bent back. Since the tab H is completely severed from the display unit l2 by the cut score In it will adhere to the liner M by means of the adhesive coating on its rear face. The tab ll thus serves as a finger hold for grasping the cover strip [4 and peeling it of! the adhesive coating 15 on the rear face of the display unit i2. The tab II also serves to reinforce the portion of the cover strip l4 extending beyond the margin of the body portion. After the cover strip is completely peeled off the display unit is now ready to be affixed to any suitable supporting surface'by simply pressing with the fingers the adhesive coated face against the supporting surface it as shown in Figure l.
The display unit will remain firmly in place after being attached, but it can be readily removed from the supporting surface by simply peeling it off without fouling or marring the supporting surface in any way. The unit may be afiixed again to the same supporting surface or other surface by pressing with the fingers.
The display unit may be made of any suitable sheet material such as cardboard, sheet metal, veneer, stiffened cloth, sheets made of synthetic materials such as celluloid, resins, and the like. It is obvious that any sheet material which may be printed or impressed with any indicia or with which any advertising matter may be afhxed or made integral therewith is contemplated within the scope of this invention. Any suitable shape, form or contour may be given to the display'unit depending upon the purpose for which it is to be used.
It is also to be understood that the invention is not restricted to any particular shape or contour of the tab II. For example, in Figure 5 the tab ll may extend the full width of the display unit from which it is severed by a cut score line It and retained in position on the liner H by the adhesive II on the rear face of the tab. Instead of completely severing the tab l I from the display unit I! a line 01 spaced slits or perforations l8 may be used along which the tab H is severed prior to peeling the cover strip I4 to which the tab adheres.
It is obvious that many variations and changes may be made in the specific embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, and it is to be understood that all such variations are intended to be included in the appended claims as is broadly consistent with the prior art. I
We claim:
1. A display unit comprising a body portion, the rear face of said body portion being provided with a coating of pressure sensitive adhesive composition and a peelable liner applied to said coating, said liner being greater in area than the area of said body portion and having a. portion extending beyond the body portion to provide a grasping portion for peeling the liner from the said coating, and a tab portion afllxed to said grasping portion for reinforcing same and providing a finger hold when said liner is peeled from said coating.
2. A display unit comprising a body portion, a tab portion severable from said body portion, the rear face of said body portion and tab portion being provided with a coating of a pressure sensitive adhesive composition, and a peelable liner applied to said coating, said tab portion being adapted to adhere to said liner and to serve as a grasping portion for peeling said liner from the pressure sensitive coating on the body portion.
3. A display unit comprising a body portion, a tab portion adjacent one end of said body portion and severed therefrom by a cut score line, the rear face of said body portion and tab portion being provided with a coating of a pressure sensitive adhesive composition, and a peelable liner applied to said coating, said tab portion being adapted to adhere to said liner and to serve as 'a grasping portion for peeling said liner from the pressure sensitive coating on the body portion.
4. A display unit comprising a body portion, a tab portion adjacent one end of said body portion of less width than said body portion and severed therefrom by a cut score line, the rear face of said body portion and tab portion being provided with a coating of a pressure sensitive adhesive composition, and a peelable liner applied to said coating, said tab portion being adapted to adhere to said liner and to serve as a grasping portion for peeling said liner from the pressure sensitive coating on the body portion.
5. A display unit comprising a substantially rectangular body portion, a tab portion adjacent one end of said body portion and severable therefrom along spaced perforations, the rear face of said body portion and tab portion being provided with a coating of a pressure sensitive adhesive composition, and a peelable liner applied to said coating, said tab portion being adapted to adhere to said linen and to serve as a grasping portion for peeling said liner from the pressure sensitive coating on the body portion.
