BENTON ELLIOTT, OF ELLSWORTH, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOE-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,881, dated April 1, 1879; application filed August 13, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it-known that I, BENTON ELLIOTT, of Ellsworth, in the county of Pierce and Sta e of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Shoe-Holder, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of my improved shoe-holder attached to a shoe-box and clamping a shoe, shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on the line as w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object. of my invention is to provide a simple device to be attached to the outside of a shoe-b0x,-for holding and displaying a sample of the shoes contained in the said box.
The invention consists in the combination, with a base-plate, of a stationary handle or finger-rest, an upright spring-plate expanding horizontally from the said rest or handle, and a doubled or downward-bent tongue, arranged to project through a slot in the spring-plate, to enable the sample to be clasped and held between the said tongue and spring-plate, as will be hereinafter described.
A is a base-plate, whose central portion is projected a distance from its attaching-lugs a by its legs or angle-plates a, which form alternate angles with the lugs and the central portion, to keep the latter supported a sufficient distance from the side surface of the box B to allow for the thickness of the foot of the sample shoe, in order that this may be hung in an easy position when its leg b is inserted in the clasp.
The plate A is secured to the box by nails through the lugs a, or by projections a, bent at right angles to the lugs, which projections may be driven through the side of the box and clinched on the inside. At the upper edge of the central portion of the plate A is an upright handle or finger-rest, G, and a doubled or downward-bent hook or tongue, D, having an outward-bent lip, 01, at its lower end. From the lower edge of the central portion of the plate A projects upward a spring-plate, E, having a slot or opening, e, to allow of its being compressed and expanded without contact with the edges of the tongue D, while the lattier projects wholly or partly through the said 8 0t 6.
The spring-plate E moves, when allowed to expand, in a mainly horizontal direction from the handle 0, and its upper end is provided with an outward-bent lip, 0, so that by grasping the outer edge of the lip e by the thumb and the inner edge of the handle 0 by the forefinger, and pressing the spring-plate toward the handle, an opening is formed between the spring-plate E and the tongue D. In the opening thus produced the edge or leg b of the sample shoe is inserted, and when the pressure is removed remains suspended, clasped by the force of the elasticity of the spring-plate E.
To remove the sample shoe, it is only necessary to pull it downward out of the clasp.
The handle 0, spring-plate E, and tongue D may each be made and attached separately; or they may be formed in one piece, by stamping them out of a piece of sheet metal and attaching the same to the base-plate, as shown in the drawings.
If desired, instead of being attached in the position shown in the drawings, the holder may be arranged with the tongue and the spring-plate lying horizontally, so as to clasp the rear portion of the leg of the shoe.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the base-plate A, the stationary handle or finger-rest (J, the upright spring-plate E, expanding horizontally from the said rest or handle 0, and the downwardbent tongue D, arranged to project through the slot 0 in the spring-plate E, to clasp the sample between the said tongue D and spring E, substantially as specified.
