Fig. l is a plan View of a derail block secured to a railroad rail in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the derail block and the clamping elements connected therewith.
Fig. 3 is an end View of the derail block illustratng partly in section, the clamping positions of the several clamping elements.
Fig. 4 is a View similar to Fig. 3 but illustrating the clamping elements released from the rail to permit the derail block to be removed therefrom, and
Fig. 5 is a sectional View taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, I l .designates a railroad rail and l l a derail block mounted on the head portion of the rail in a position to elevate a car wheel and direct the ange of said wheel across the top of the rail. The block may be of any suitable construction having a base portion head and having a. wheel flange receiving groove The base portion of the block is provided with a forwardly tapered extension I4 which seats 3 on top of the rail head in advance of the grooved portion of the block so that the tread portion of a wheel will run upon the extension I4 and thereadapted to engage the outer side face of the rail head and project beneath the under surface of the head. A pair of ears |6-l6 and a lug l1 depend from the bottom of the block at the other side of the rail.
flange I5 to permit the derail block to be applied to rail heads of dilerent sizes..
The derail block is removably clamped to the rail by means of The said projection 23 and the inturned end of the angular ange l5 cooperate to lock The other end of with a hook 28 for engaging over the edge of the base ange 29 of the rail. The lever is held clamped to the base ange 22 of the rail by means of a winged nut 3U threaded on the bolt 2l so as to engage the outer face of the lever I8.
present invent1on by means of the screw member which extends through the lever I8 and may be suitably adjusted to bear against the web of the rail adjacent the rail head. Preferably, the screw 20 extends loosely through the lever I 8, but has a threaded engagement with a nut 3| which is non-rotatably iitted in a recess 32 in the is provided with a sliding pin 33 which serves as a lever for operating the screw member 20.
'I'he lever I8 is preferably provided at its upper end with a portion 34 formed with a slot 35 toreceive `the lower end of a signal stai 3 6. Any suitable flag or other signal may be attached to the upper end of the stal 36 to indicate that the section of track, to which the derail block is applied, is closed.
In order to prevent unauthorized removal of the derail block, an ordinary padlock 31 may be applied by inserting the lock bolt through an aperture 38 formed in one of thev ears I6 so as to prevent upward swinging of the lever I8.
When it is desired to remove the derail bloc from the rail, the wing nut 30 is loosened to per-` mit the clamp bolt 21 to be disengaged from the base flange 29. The lever I8 outwardly and upwardly, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, until the inner end of the screw member 20 clears the lower edge of the rail head, whereby the derail block may be removed by a turning movement in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. il of the drawings. It will be apparent from the above description, that the derail block can be removed and re-applied to the rail without altering the adjustment of the screw member 20.
While the invention is illustrated in connection with one approved form, it will be understood that the scope of the invention is not restricted to the specic constructions shown and described except insofar as specic limitations appear in the appended claims. y
