That is, the periphery of theigrinding wheel which comes against and-contacts the metal to be ground may have an irregular shape given to it transversely of its face to reproduce on a part to be ground such irregular face in relief or the opposite. One example is a grinding wheel with a continuous concave groove around its peripheral face betwen the sides of the wheel which on the work will produce a corresponding convex rib'asillustrated in Fig. 4. It is an object 1l and purpose of my. invention to provide a novel and eilicient means and oney which is simple to construct and" reliable in use for dressing wheels of the character stated or many other forms than the concaved groove mentioned as `an example. go Anunderstanding of the invention andthe operation thereof. may be had from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

In the construction illustrated in the drawings,
a supporting or base plate i, preferably of cast iron or `mild steel, at one end thereof hasa trans-i 4% verse bar 2 secured at the upper side of the plaie, above and lengthwise of which is asecond bar 3 which may be termed a,- clamping bar and which is clamped against the bar 2 by clamping screws i, one at each end of the bar 3, as shown. The 45 bar 2 may be secured to the base plate I by screws indicated in dotted outline 5 in Fig. 1 passing upwardly through the base plate I and threading into the bar at 2. The bar at 2 is preferably of non-magnetic material for a reasonwhich will 50 hereinafter be-stated.
-T'he` clamping bar l is used to clamp a template 5 between it andthe bar 2. Such template 8 is anat plate, at the rear edge of which appears a'concavedrecess 'I.` Such'recess l is for the 55 purpose of showing -one example of the form .ing or slot in the feelerl member to which the face of a grinding whee1 is-to be dressed, but it is to be understood that the rear edge oi' the template may have many other shapes and is designed as to the shape selected in'accordance with the form and configuration 5 that the peripheral grinding face of the grinding wheel is to take. .At the upper side o1 the bar 3 a block 8 with a passage at'the underside thereof from front to rear is either integrally formed or is secured to said bar 3 for the purpose of at- A10 taching a dust guard 8 which extends upwardly and to. the rear at an angle to the vertical, the lower end portion thereof being narrowed in width and turned horizontally as at I0 for entrance into the rectangular passage at the lower side of the part I and over the bar-3.
A combined carrier for the dressing or cutting diamond and holder for a' feeler to engage the e edge of the template is used. It comprises abase II from which a vertical post I2 extends up 20 wardly, at the upper end of which is a horizontal sleeve I3, in the iront end of which a holder It for a diamond cutter l5 may be releasably secured; 'I'he head oi' the-holder il, as shown in the drawings is of conical form but it may take other shapes, as will be later described.
- At the upper side and front portion of the base I a feeler i6 having a forwardly projecting tape portion I'I, the angular relation of the' sides of which are the same as the angular relations of the sides of the head of the holder Il,
is clamped upon a raised section I8 having a fiat horizontal upper face bymeans of a clamping screw Il. The screw i9 passes through an open- IS, permitting adjustment ofthe feeler member which must beJocated' directly below the diamond holder `I4 with the pointed end oi' the tapered section I1 directly below and in the samev vertical plane 'with the point of the diamond cutter -I 5, land with 40 the angular sides of the part I'I in inclined planes coincidentzwith the planes oi the sides of the conical holder il.
` In dressing the grinding wheel 20, the base I may be placedupon a magnetic chuck indicated o at 2l, located properly with respect to the grinding wheeland then magnetically held by the chuck through turning on the electric current. The center of the `diamond radius I5 must be in line with the axis -of the grinding wheel aboutl 50 which the wheel turns. The base II at least, of the diamond and feeler holder and carrier, is of non-magneticmaterial whereby it may be freely moved over the plate I without being afected by e Vmagnetic chuck. Ihe point of the .iront 55 portion I1 of the feeler I6 is brought against the rear edge of the template 6 and the post I2 and plate Il operated by the hands of the operator and with the feeler held against the-rear edge of the template 6, may be used to dress the peripheral face of the grinding wheel 20 to produce on the face of the grinding wheel a conformity with the rear edge of the template. Various other forms than the groove indicated at 1 may be used in therear edge off the template to produce corresponding peripheral patterns around the peripheral grinding face of the grinding wheel. 'I'he dust from the grinding wheel is carried downwardly to the dust guard 9, delecting the same forward. The non-magnetic character of the bar 2 is also to avoid any magnetizing effects upon the template 6" frorn the magnetic chuck 2l on which the tool may be placed and held. Of course, vwhen the tool is held some other way than magnetically, itmakes little difference that the bar 2 or the part i! should be of non-magnetic material, but in most cases the dressing tool will be used in' conjunc-A tion with a magnetic chuck.
'I'he diamond may have any radii or may have a knife edge. 'I'his will not alter the working of the device providing the feeler is shaped to the same outline. With a dressing tool or device made in accordance with my invention, it is possible to grind duplicate contours, previously heretofore considered a, substantial mechanical impossibility. The grinding wheel may be very readily dressed to a desired or selected contour by providing a template in accordance therewith. The dust guard protects the template and the feeler from grit or dust cut from the grinding wheel which might come between the two and result in abrasion.
The inventionis of a very practical and useful nature. It is defined in the appended claims and is lto be considered comprehensive of all forms of structure coming within the scope of said claims.
I claim: l. Apparatus for shaping grinding wheels to a desired contour comprising, a' base member, a
ytemplate mounted thereon having a predetermined contour at one edge to be reproduced in the peripheral face of a grinding wheel, a member having a base adapted to be moved horizontally over the upper side of the first. mentioned base in any direction, a holder for a wheel dressing implement connected with and located above said second base, a dressing 'implement carried by said holder, said wheel dressing implement being adapted to be pointed toward and located in the same horizontal plane with the axis about which the grinding wheel to be dressed rotates, and a feeler mounted on said second base adapt' ed tof be brought against the contour edge of saidl template, said feeler having a feeler contact point in direct vertical alinement with. the point of said dressing implement, and having sides corresponding to the sides of saiddressing implement, as andfor the purposesspecied.
2. Apparatus for shaping the peripheral face of a grinding wheel to a desired contour comprising,'a'base member, having a fiat upper side,

3. Apparatus for shaping grinding wheels to a desired contour comprising, a supporting base having a fiat upper side, said base being of magnetic attractivelmaterial, a bar secured across one end of the base and above the same, said bar being of non-magnetic material, a feeler plate of sheet metal adjustably clamped at the upper side of the bar and having a rear edge shaped to a preselected contour, a dressing tool and feeler carrying member including a base of non-magnetic attractive material, the underside of which is iiat and is adapted to be moved over the upper side of the first named base in any direction that it may be moved, a wheel dressing tool carried on and above said second base, said 'tool being pointed in a forward direction, a feeler adjustably mounted at the upper side of said second base pointed in the same direction as the dressing tool and havingA its foremost point in direct vertical alinement with the foremost point of the-dressing tool and having its side contours in conformity with the side contours of the dressing tool, said feeler being adapted to .be held againstl the template and moved therealong to follow the contour thereof, as specified.
4. Apparatus for shaping grinding wheels to a desired contour comprising, a supporting base member of magnetattractive ymaterial adapting the same to be connected with and held upon a magneticchuck, a template carried by and at the front side of said base, means for mounting said template on the base including a member of non-magnetic material between said base and template, said-template at its rear edge having a contour preselected as the contour to which the peripheral surface of the grinding wheel is to be dressed, a dressing, tool and feeler carrier located above said base back of the template including a lower base member of nonmagnetic material having a horizontal under surface to move freely over the upper surface of the first base member, a dressing toolcarried on and above saidsecond base member pointed in a forward direction, said dressing tool including a conical head and a dressing terminal point at the apex thereof, and a feeler adiustably mounted at the upper side and front portion of the second base member comprising a at horizontal plate having a pointed forward portion. with Lta terminal dressing point, and the sides of said tapered portion being in planes coincident with the horizontal sides of said conicalhead, .as specified. 4 f

Apparatus for shaping grindlngwheels to a` desired contour comprising, a base member having a flat horizontal upper side, a horizontally disposed template mounted on and above said base at one end thereof having an edge shaped to preselected contour which extends over the base member, a member having a base with a flat under side adapted to rest upon and move over the upper side of the rst mentioned base in any direction, a holder for a wheel dressing implement connected with and located above said second base, a Wheel dressing implement secured in said holder adapted to be pointed toward and have its dressing end lie in the same horizontal plane with the axis about which the grinding wheel to be dressed rotates, and a feeler mounted on said second base in substantially the same horizontal plane with said template, said feeler having a free end to bear against the template and follow the contour thereof, the point of engagement of the feeler with the template be lng in direct vertical alinement with the outermost point of the dressing implement.
