This'invention is an improvement in newspaper web printing presses of vthat type in which a multiple of web` perfecting units are arranged in linewith a folder unit, and provided with means whereby webs can be fed to eachunit and the lprinted webs directed from the units to the folder.
Usually one of the press units is adapted to print a special page or pages, which ordinarily appear,
i as page 1 in the completed paper and must be assembled with the product of some other particular unit. It is desirable to enable such special page or pages to be assembled with the product of any other unit, and mechanism for l this purpose is disclosed in my copending application filed April 19, 1937, Serial No. 137,856, wherein adjustable web deecting mechanism is employed at the side of the press. MyY present invention provides novel adjustable web deflecting mechanism above the press, whereby a web ordinarily delivered in sections.
printed on one unit of the press, and bearing 'somespecial feature, can be assembled or associatedwith any other web printed on any other Yunit` of the press instead of being conned as desired to have pages which have special features that differentiate them from the usual newspaper l page (such as half-tone cuts, colors, or distinctive type) appear on the first page of any section of the paper, or it may be desired to have same appear on an inside page of any section of the paper.
The unit type of newspaper press comprises a number of perfecting units each capable of producing from four to eight perfected pages according to whether the plate cylinders are twoplate or four-plate wide; and if four-plate wide units are employed each unit has associated with ita group of angle bars to divert one longitudinal section of the web out of the straight line passage to the folder, and place it over or under the remaining straight running section, both sections being then directed to the folder. In a twoplate wide press the aforesaid angle bars are not required, but in a four-plate wide press such angle bars` are usually arrangedV near or over each printing unit. -If such four-page Wide newspaper press is operated at full capacity each perfecting unit will -print eightpages, four on each longitudinal section of the web, and these may be run to and through the folder and delivered as separate eight-page papers; or the webs may be combined with the webs printed by other units and deliveredfin sections each containing more than eight rpages up to the full page capacity of the press.
My present vinvention provides novel means whereby the special pages produced '0n one unit may be assembled with the product of any other unit, as may be desired by the pressman or publisher. Such means includes novel web deflecting lmechanism adjustably mounted above the units and guides whereby the web bearing the special pages may be assembled with Vany other web. To facilitate an understanding of the invention I will explain same in connection with a multi-unit newspaper press commonly known as a unitubular press in whichl the units employ single-pageucylindric plates, butthe invention'l is not limited to such type of press aswill be readily understood by those familiar with the art.
To enable othersV to understand and use thek invention I will explain the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, and will summarize in the claims the essentials of the invention, the novel yfeatures of construction, and novel*k combinations of parts, for which protection is desired.

The printing press shown comprises four perfecting units l, 2, 3, 4, arranged in line with a folder 6 at one end, andawweb supply at its other end. The webs WI, W2,KW3,` W4 are led from the rolls RI, R2, R3, R4 to their respective printing units, and fromy them to the folder 6.
In lthe press shown the unit l is adapted to special features on the web Wl, and this web WI may be deflected by my novel web deflecting mechanism and re-entered into the` press between and assembled with any one of the webs W2, W3, W4, before it passes to the folder 6.
TheV press`shown has the usual top ties 5a at each side; and upon the ties are mounted longitudinally disposed bars 'I having short downturned ends whereby they are spaced above the ties. Bars I are of sufficient length to extend from the folder to and over the printing units 2, 3, 4.
Slidably mounted upon the bars 'I is a web deflecting frame consisting of side members 9 connected by cross-ties 9a. One member 9 carries spaced depending brackets 9b that depend to a point somewhat below the ties 5a. In the upper ends of the brackets 9a is journaled a guide I0 and between the lower ends of the brackets 9b is journaled a guide I I. At the side of the frame, towards the unit I, is journaled a guide I2. Between the members 5a is mounted an angle bar I3 for directing the web to the guide I0.
Adjacent each end of bars .'Iv are bearings 'la for lead screws Ib having beveled gears 'Ic at one end meshing with bevel gears Bc on atransverseshaft Y8 journaled-in` bearings' 8a on thetopsof bars 1. The .screws 'Ib extend through threaded bores'in members Il, and by rotating screws 'lb the web deflectingv frame can be adjpsted longitudinally of the press to any .desired V` position.- .The screws may be rotated manually by a crank 8d on shaft 8, or can be operated by power means if desired.
At the end of the members 'I adjacent unit I isga guide I4 over which is led the web WI from press unit I.
In the press frame below the ties 5a and disposed at the approximate height of the guide II are angle bars I5, I6, I'I supported between rods lt, IIa, I'Ia which may be mounted in brackets 5b attachedto ties 5a. Angle bar I5 is disposed between press units 2 and 3; bar I6 between units 3 and 4; and bar I1 between unit 4 and folder 6; and each of the bars are adapted to direct the web from slide frame guide `II towards the folder 6.
The webs W2, W3 and W4 from units 2, 3 and 4 may be led over their respective guides 2a, 3a, and la direct to folder 6 as usual. `If the web deiiecting mechanism is not being used,'the web WI from unit I may also be led over guides I4 and I2, and directed (as web WIa, Fig. 1) over y.

Assuming the web deilecting frame to be in the positionshown in the drawings (i. e., disposed between printing units 3 and 4) the web WI may be directed over guides I4 and I2 to and under angle bar I3 of the slide frame, and deected laterally (as web WIb, Figs. 1 and 2) to and over guide I0, down under guide II, over and under angle bar I6, and thereby .deflected land directed towards the folder 6; theweb WIb passing from angle bar I6 to and over guide rolls Im, In disposed between the units 3 and 4, and thence passing to folder E assembled with the web W3.
If frame 9 was positioned between the units 2 and 3, the web WI would issue from guide II of the slide frame and would pass over and under angle bar I5, and over guides Ip, lq, disposed between the webs W2, W3 and then pass (as web WIC, Fig. l) over guide Ir to the folder 6 and assembled with web W2.
If frame 9 is positioned between unit 4 and folder 6, the web WI could be led from guide II of the slide frame over and under' angle bar II, under guide I s, to folder E, the web WI passing as web WIcZ, Fig. 1, and being assembled with web VM.'
fThe special printing unit may print a one- :a-djusted accordingly, as will be obvious to the pressman.
In some such re-arrangement, if desired a guide Isimilar to guide ID might be mounted on the slidev frame 9 at the opposite side of the press, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. Y It might be necessary to reverse the angle bars I5, I6, I'I and the angle bar I3 so as to properly direct the diverted web if it is desired to turn suchwebupsi-dedown in order to enable the special lfeature web to be inverted.
Obviously a greaterror less number of printing units may be used, and by the use of appropriate slitters :and guide rolls, as shown in my copending .application the webs may be four-pages wide; the folder may be either straight run, or
collecting and deliver the paper in sections or as a unit.

In a printing press having a plurality of printing units arranged in line, an angle bar above each unit, and a folder unit in line with the printing units; web deflecting means adjustable longitudinally of the press whereby a web from one-unit may be diverted from its normal pathand returned into the path of a web from another unit .and associated therewith prior to folding thereof.
4. In a printing press having a plurality of printing units arranged in line, an anglevbar above each unit, and a folder unit in line with the printing units; web deflecting means coniprising a frame carrying an angle bar and guides,
adjustable longitudinally of the press whereby a web from one unit may be diverted from its normal pathand returned to the path of a web-- -a web printed by the special unit may be diverted from its normal path and returned into the path of a web from another unit and associated therewith prior to folding thereof.
6. In a printing press having a plurality of printing units, an angle bar above each aforesaid printing unit, a special printing unit in line with the other units, and a folder unit in line with the printing units; web deflecting means comprising a frame carrying an angle bar and guides adjustable longitudinally of the printing units whereby a web printed by the special unit may be diverted from its normal path and returned into the path of a web from another unit and associated therewith prior to folding thereof.

In a newspaper printing press, a plurality of perfecting units, a special printing unit, and a folder arranged in line, an angle bar above each perfecting unit, and a web supply for each unit; a frame mounted above the units and carrying an angle bar and web guides, and means for adjusting the frame longitudinally of the press whereby the web printed by the special unit may be deflected and associated with the web printed by any perfecting unit prior to folding thereof.

In a printing press having a plurality of perfecting units, a special printing unit, a folder arranged in line, a web supply and guides yfor directing Webs from the supply to the several units and fromthe several units to the folder; angle bars above the perfecting units; a frame movable longitudinally of the press above the units, an angle bar and guides on said frame, and means for adjusting said frame whereby a web printed by the special unit may be deflected and assembled with the web printed by any perfecting unit before folding thereof.
