UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
WILLIAM WHITE, OF NEOGA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT lN FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,599, dated March 25, 1879; application filed May 18, 1878.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. WHITE, of Neoga, Cumberland county, Illinois, have invented Improvements in Fences, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an improvement on the fence patented by me April 23, 1878 5 and has for its object to more firmly secure' the upright posts, especially in the case of a portable fence, and to hold the upper rail in an elevated position.
In the drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure l is aperspective View of a fence with my improvements; Figs. 2 and 3, detached views, showing the posts; and Fig. 4, a detached View of the tie-block.
`1n my aforesaid patented fence the posts instance the flange at the side of each beveled post is prolonged upward so as to form a standard, c, as shown. The bracing-rails B B' are placed at an angle, resting on the faces b, and each crossing both of the standards c outside of the same, as shown in the drawings, and upon these rest the tie-bars C, which are con iined laterally by the standards c, as shown; the braces maintaining the tie-bars at a greater elevation than would be possible if they rested,
as usual, directly in the notch between the braces without the support of the standards c. The tie-bars C serve to hold the braces B B' in place, and the latter steady the bars A A and maintain them in their upright position, constituting an improvement upon my beforedescribed fence, in which the upright bars had no such lateral support.
In some instances the inclined faces b may have anges c' c at both sides, formingrecesses e, so that the uprights cannot be displaced in either direction.
In order to insure a still firmer support, each bar A A' may have one or more recesses, s, to receive the enlarged head a of a cross-tie, I, which holds them together.
When the fence is to be portable the bars A A' t a notch, x, in a block, D, which lies upon the ground, and has recesses 'i at the ends to receive the inclined braces B B', as shown.
I claim- 1. The post having an inclined face, b,witl1 a standard, c, at one side, land a iange, c', at the other side, as set forth.
2. The parallel uprights A A', having dovetailed notches in the sides, in combination with the tie-block I, having enlarged heads adapted to the notches in the posts, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribin g witnesses.
WILLIAM RICHARD WHITE.
