Description

NOY. 8, 1938. r J MARCHNER 7 2,135,981
HEATING DEVICE FOR AUTOMOBILES Filed Jan. 28,- 1957 L- ullgY 1 18a, ,1. 0 2 F 7r 5 (1517 r :0 b (5 b o o o; 12 M lN VENT OR 9F 317154, 1 d A Mara/22a Patented Nov. 8, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
The object of this invention is to provide a hot water heating device to be placed in the floor of a car in front of the front seat of a coupe, or in front of both the front and the back seat of a sedan.
Another object is to construct the heating device so that the water will circulate therein from the top of the motor to which the heating device is connected. I
Another object of the invention is to construct the heating devices so that they can be cheaply made and so that they can be easily and quickly installed and connected up or disconnected.
These and other objects of the invention will be illustrated in the drawing, described in the specification and pointed out in the claims at the end thereof.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view of the car showing the engine block and the heating devices connected thereto.
Figure 2 is a vertical section through one of the heating devices, the section being taken on a larger scale than is shown in the heating device in F e 1.
Figure '3 is a vertical section through the core of the heating device.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the heating device shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Figure 5 is a top plan view of the cover plate that is placed on top of the heater shown in Figure 4.
Figure 5--A is a detail view of a part of one of the two side flanges on the edge of the plate P shown in Figure 5,
Figure 6 Ban end elevation of the cover plate 'of the heating device shown in Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a detail view of a ventilating device used in under the heater in the car floor.
In the drawing like reference numerals indicate like parts.
In the drawing reference numeral I indicates an automobile with the usual running gear, 2 indicates the engine block, 3 indicates a tube connected to the water cooling system of the engine block, which tube is forked so that sections 4 and 5 thereof run to the heaters 6 and I, which-constitute the subject matter of my invention.
Each of these heaters consists of two plates 8 and 9. These plates are'stamped and stretched to form the shape shown in Figure 3, so that when the plates are brought together the rims III of the upper plate around the holes II, II are spun over and around and under the rims of holes in the lower plate as shown in Figure 3, and
in this manner the two plates are fastened together so as to form a panel in which nine holes appear extending through from top to bottom. In like manner, the outer rim of the upper plate is spun over the outer rim of the under plate, as indicated at l2 in Figure 3, so that the four outer edges of the two plates are joined together. In this way one of the heating units is formed.
On this heating unit is placed a cover plate I3 such as is shown in Figure 5. Only one of these plates is used, it being placed on top of the unit shown in Figure 3. This plate is perforated with rectangular openings, l8 of which are shown in Figure 5. These rectangular openings are arranged in pairs. The metal of each rectangular opening is slit on three sides and is bent down, forming a tongue or leg. It is left connected to the plate on the fourth side of each opening; that is, on the side adjacent to the next opening of its pair of openings. In this manner two legs l4, H are formed extending down from the cover plate, nine pairs of legs in all being formed. Each pair of legs extends down through one of the nine openings 1 I. By means of these legs the cover plate is centered on and held in place over the heating unit, as is shown in Figure 2. The
legs are bent to a cylindrical contour having an upright axis, so as to stiffen and strengthen them.
The ends of the cover plate 13 are bent down to form the flanges I5 shown in Figure 6. Each of these flanges hasthe openings l6, l6 therein through which air can circulate into and out of the heating units. The sides of the cover plate are bent down to form flanges l1, I! which are similar to the fianges l5, having openings l6 therein for the circulation of air. In addition thereto, rectangular openings "lb and iii are formed therein, in each of which tongues 3a and l9a are struck up. The tongue l9a extends up, and inwardly, and then out horizontally and forms a shoulder on which the unit 8 rests, and the tongue l8a extends down and inwardly and forms a shoulder that rests on the unit 8, and between the two tongues the cover plate is held correctly in position with reference to the unit 8. In order to disconnect the cover plate l3 from the unit 8, the tongue I9a is pulled out, which permits the raising of the cover plate.
I claim:
1. In a hot water heating device, the combination of two plates suitably joined together to hold water between them and form the heating element, said heating element having holes through it at suitable intervals to permit the circulation of air therethrough, a cover plate thereof air therethrough, a cover plate therefor,
tongues struck out in said cover plate adapted to register with the holes in the heating element and extend therethrough, ventilating holes being formed in the cover plate where said tongues are struck out, flanges on the edges of said cover plate adapted to cover the edges of the heating unit, locking devices on said flanges adapted to engage the top and'bottom of the heating unit to hold the cover plate thereon.
