Description

1938- J. H. o. KORNAHRENS VISIBLE SHIFT BINDER Filed July 29, 1937 v INVENTOR 44M BY T I ll L EZ I E ORNEY Patented Nov. 8, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE VISIBLE SHIFT BINDER Application July 29, 1937, Serial No. 156,286
1 Claim.
This invention relates to visible shift binders and has for an object to provide a binder of the above type having novel and improved details of construction and combinations of parts.
Various other objects will be apparent as the nature of the invention is more fully disclosed.
Although the novel features which are believed to be characteristic of this invention will be more particularly pointed out in the claim appended hereto, the invention will be better understood by referring to the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which a particular embodiment thereof has been set forth for purposes of illustration.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the hinged back portion of a binder embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1, but with the back in partly open position;
Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1, but with the back closed; and
Fig. 5 is a detail View of the slide.
In the following description and in the claim certain specific terms are used for convenience in referring to various details of the invention. It is to be understood, however, that these terms are to be given as broad an interpretation as the state of the art will permit.
Referring to the drawing more in detail, the bind-er is shown as having a channel back formed of two angle pieces H1 and H, carrying Z-plates l2 and I4, respectively, which are permanently attached thereto in any convenient manner to form box-like structures. The Z-plates l2 and I4 are formed with sections I2a, I21), and I20 and Ma, Nb, and Me, respectively, which are disposed at right angles to each other and are positioned with the sections I201. and Ma adjacent and attached to the angle pieces l and II, respectively. Hinge knuckles l and IE are formed on the sections |2c and Me and are joined by a hinge pin to form a hinge about which the two angle pieces I0 and H can be opened. The section I la of the Z-plate l4 carries a set of prongs 20 which are adapted to engage the perforations in the loose leaves, not shown. Section Ma also carries hinge knuckles 2| to which a cover 22 is hinged as by hinge pin 23.
A slide 25 is mounted adjacent the section |2a of the Z-plate I2 and carries prongs 26 which are similar to the prongs 2|], above mentioned. The slide 25 is provided with ears 21 which enter elongated recesses 28 in the section |2b of the Z-plate I2. The slide 25 carries hinge knuckles 29 in alignment with hinge knuckles 30 formed on the section |2a of the Z-plate l2. The hinge knuckles 29 of the slide 25 are spaced to receive hinge knuckles 3| of a cover 32 therebetween, the hinge knuckles 29, 30 and 3| being secured by a hinge pin 33. The dimensions of the hinge knuckles 29 and 30 are such that clearance is provided between adjacent hinge knuckles of the slide 25 to permit a predetermined longitudinal movement thereof.
One of the ears 21 carries a channel member 35 which is disposed beneath the section |2b of the Z-plate l2 and is provided with a flange 36 disposed adjacent the section I and adapted to register with an aperture 31 in said section |2c when the slide is not in normal operating position. A finger 40 is attached to the Z-plate M in a position to enter the aperture 31 above men- 20 tioned. The finger, however, is prevented from entering the aperture by the flange 36 of the channel member 35 except when the slide is in normal position, thereby preventing the back from being closed until the slide has been re- 25 turned to said position.
Two position latches 4| are attached to the 2- plate l4 and are provided with pairs of catches Ma and Mb to hold the back in closed position as shown in Fig. 4, or in partly open position as shown in Fig. 3. A suitable lever 42 is provided for actuating the latches 4| to permit the back to be opened when desired.
It will be noted that in the above described construction the slide 25 is held in position by ears 21 as well as by hinge pin 33 and channel member 35. This provides a plurality of sliding supports for the slide 25 which permit free sliding movement thereof and prevent the weight of the sheets carried on the prongs 26 from interfering with the operation thereof. Furthermore, the cover 32 is hinged between the hinge knuckles 29 of the slide 25 in such a way that the cover is shifted with the slide and prongs. Inasmuch as the pages are necessarily shifted with the prongs, 45 this prevents relative movement between the pages and the cover.
The channel member 35 is welded or otherwise permanently secured to the ear 2'! so that the slide cannot be removed after the binder has been assembled. The channel member prevents the slide from becoming displaced when the hinge pin 33 is removed. This piece 35 also serves as a stop to prevent the binder from being closed when the prongs are improperly positioned and 56 also prevents the prongs from being shifted longitudinally of the back when the binder is in closed position.
While a specific embodiment of the invention has been shown for purposes of illustration, it is to be understood that the invention is capable of various uses and that various changes and modifications may be made therein as will appear to a person skilled in the art. The invention is only to be limited in accordance with the following claim when interpreted in view of the prior art.
What is claimed is:
A loose leaf binder, comprising a frame having two hinged parts, a box forming plate attached to each of said parts, hinge knuckles carried by one of said box forming plates, a slide mounted on said one of said plates and having hinge knuckles in alignment with the hinge knuckles thereof and spaced to permit relative sliding movement therebetween, a cover having hinge knuckles positioned between the hinge knuckles of said slide and a hinge pin extending through all of said hinge knuckles to hingedly secure said cover to said slide and to slidably secure said slide to said part, one of said plates carrying a tongue adapted to enter an aperture in the other of said plates, an ear on said slide extending through an elongated slot in the corresponding :plate and a member carried by said ear having a surface engaging said plate to secure said slide in position and having a flange registering with said-aperture to prevent said tongue from entering the same except when said slide is in normal position.
