Abstract

708,722. Loose leaf binders. MINKOFF,. J. I. Feb. 16, 1951 [Feb. 18, 1950; Jan. 25, 1951], No. 3833/51. Class 146(1) In a loose leaf claw binder having side covers hinged to a back carrying the two sets of claws and provided with actuating mechanism therefor, the back comprises a rigid box-shaped part provided with openings for the claws, which are carried by a member disposed within the box, and is formed by at least two rigid members, one back member and one cover plate which may be in two pieces, one of these members having lateral connecting means engaging perforations in the side covers and co-operating with surfaces on the second member so as to prevent disengagement of the covers, the actuating mechanism for the claws comprising a longitudinally displaceable member. As shown in Figs. 2, 3, a U-shaped back plate 3 has longitudinal grooves 6, 7 and 8, and into the middle groove 6 is rigidly fixed a rail 16 carrying pairs of spring arms 15 with which claws 5 are integral. Two U-shaped cover plates 9 have one wing 12 slidably engaged in groove 7 or 8, the other wing 13 being cut away to provide hooks 11, which pass through perforations 2 in covers 1 and press against the outer edges of the back plate 3. Each cover plate 9 has a series of cam inclines 14 which cooperate with the arms 15, to open or close the claws 5, on relative sliding movement between the back plate 3 and the cover plate 9. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the spring arms 15 extend throughnut the length of the binder and are provided with projections to co-operate with inclines 14. In further suggested modifications, each pair of arms 15 is carried by an individual rail 16 and the two cover plates 9 may be joined by bridges between the claws. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the U-shaped back plate 3 has transverse ribs 20 and a single cover plate 23 has transverse ribs 22 each providing half bearings for axles 21 to which are rigidly secured claws 27 having heels 29. Covers 25, hinged at 26, are secured by hooks 24 on the plate 23 which pass through perforations 2 to co-operate with the inner surface of the back plate 3. The claws are opened by springs 35 pressing on some of the heels 29 and are held closed by a cam acting on the top of one end pair of heels 29, the cam being on a member moved longitudinally by a control protruding from the binder, the member having a nipple engaging in a slot in the cover plate 23. In the modification shown in Fig. 10, U-shaped back plate 3 and cover plate 40 having half bearings 42. 43 for axles 21 on which claws 5 are freely mounted and pass through openings 41 in the plate 40, which have cam surfaces 45 for opening and closing the claws 5 on relative sliding movement between the plates 3 and 40. Covers 1 are held by hooks 11 as in the first embodiment. The plates 3, 40 are held together and guided in the sliding movement, by spring catches 47 secured to plate 3 and passing through a central slot 53, the catches 47 having hooks 46 to co-operate with and slide along surfaces 48 by the sides of the slot.
