Mounted to move vertically through an opening in the base is a plunger I4 furnishing the body-portion of` a work- 45, support or jack. To receive its movement, the plunger is provided `at its forward side with a rack I6, withwhich meshes a pinion I8 fast upon a short horizontal shaft I9 journaled across 'the base. Secured to the shaft is a hand-lever 20 50. rising at one side of the frame-arm, arranged to begra'sped by the operator and swung in opposite directions to either raise or lower the plunger. Guided for vertical movementl about theplunger is an upper portion 24 which furnishes the work-supportl proper. This conforms generally to the counter-portion of a shoe, such as is shown at S, the insole thereof resting upon the upper surfaceof the member, positioned for the attaching operation. From the member 24 depends a sleeve-portion 26, which surrounds and isguided by the outside of the plunger. TheA rsupport-top 24.` is held normally raisedby a helical spring. 28fcontained' in a longitudinal passage 30 vin the plunger. At its `lower extremity, the spring abuts'against the plunger, while 'at-.its upper endit contacts with a sleeve 32 movable `freely in the passage. The expansion of the spring-,and the extent to which the sleeve may be elevated are limited by contact of the latter'withI ahead 34 formed on the upper extremity of a rod 36A which passes through them and is threaded into @the plunger at the bottom of the 4passage 30. The head 34 is slotted to receive: avscreW-driver, so the rod may be inserted and removed', and the parts readily assembled and disassembled. Therod and sleeve extend into a cylindrical recess 38 within the sleeve-portion 26, the top wallofthe recess resting upon the upper endV of the s1eeve32, with the rod-head 34 in a centralpassage 40 in the support-top 24.v The spring 28, through the sleevev 32, thus supports the -top.24 `to yield under pressure.

These 3 correspond inarrangement to the particular design in accordance with which nails N or other attaching fastenings are to` beinserted in the work. vWith their lower ends resting upon the uppery extremity of the plunger I4 and passing through the recess 38 into the passages 42 are drivers 44, one for each of said passages. The drivers are accurately positioned upon the plunger in vertical alinement with the passages by a locating plate 46, carried on the plunger and containing a setof ve openings 48 into which the driver-enlds nt. Preferably, the drivers have nail-engaging ends 5Il-which aredownwardly and inwardly inclined to holdthe nails with their enteringpoints toward the inner sides of the passages 42, so when driven, said nails will toe in. This reduces thefliability of emergence of the points through the side-wall of a heel H being attached. To insure the correct relation of these inclined endsabouttheaxes of the drivers and to hold. them against separation from the plunger, each driver has at its side just above the plate 4G, a slot 52, each slot being in a definite angular relation about the axis of the driver to the inclination of the driver-end. Resting upon the plate 46 is a polygonal plate 54 having an opening 55 to receive the sleeve 32, the plate being Yof such width that it will occupy the slots '52, as these are located just above the upper surface of the plate 46. The plate 54 has a side 56 corresponding to each driver, the angle between the sides being such that as the edges of the plates lie in the slots, they will so limit the rotation ofthe drivers-about their axes in the/openings 48 of the plate 46 that the inclined ends 50will be correctly positioned. To secure the two p-lates on the plunger, there passes through registering openings in them the shank of a screw 58. YThis screw is threaded into the top of the plunger I4 and holds the plates and the drivers in the desired relation, also securing'them to the plunger. An elongated cylindrical head 59 of the screw extends intoa passage in the top 24, so the screw is made accessible when the top is in place, and at the same time said top is held against rotation upon the plunger to maintain the alinement of 'the drivers with the passages 42. In Fig. 3 of the drawings, clearance-spaces will be seen between the edges of the plate 54 and the inner 'walls of the slots 52 and also about the sleeve `32 in the opening 575.Y In assembling the drivers 44 upon their plunger, with the top24 removed, the ends of the four front drivers are placed in the plateopenings 48 and the plate 54' slipped from the rear over the surface of the plate 46 until its edges enter the driver-slots 52. The clearancespaces in the slots 52 and the opening 55 yare suflicient to permit the rplate 54 to be thus moved until the rear driver may be inserted in its opening 48. Then, the plate 54 is shifted rearwardly into the slot in this rear driverand the openings in the two plates. and in the plunger are brought into registration. This allows the screw 58 to be inserted to secure these elements together. Thereupon, the top 24 may be placed upon the plunger, with the drivers in the passages 42 andthe rodhead 34 and the screw-head 59 in the respective passages 4I! and 60. f
A heel may be positioned on the heel-seat of a shoe carried by the top 24 for the operations upon it and the vnail-inserting pressure `resisted by tread and rear abutments. through the overhanging armV I2 is a screw V62 having fast upon its upper extremity a handwheel 64 and at its lower extremity a reduced portion 68 surrounded by a carrier-block 58. VProjecting from the front of the carrier is a. lug 14, through which is threaded vertically a contactscrew 'I5 provided at its upper end with a fingerpiece 'I8 convenient for manipulation by the operator.r Pivoted at 88 upon the carrier is an abutment-plate 82, the outer portion of which is urged against the screw 16 by a torsion-springy 84 encircling the pivot-pin 88 Yand having its ends engaging, respectively, the carrier and plate. Threaded vertically Between the ends of the frame-arm I2 is a forwardly and downwardly inclined passage 8E, in which is free to move longitudinally a screw 88. A tension-spring 90 joining the screw to the frame at the outer end of the passage holds against said frame a nut 92 upon the screw. A screw 94 threaded through the frame into a longitudinal slot 96 in thescrew 88 retains the latter screw against rotation while it is being adjusted by the nut 92. Attached to the forward extremity of the screw 88 by a bolt 98 is a transversely curved, padded rear abutment |00 against which a heel to be attached may rest. As the nut 92 is rotated,
the spring keeps it against the frame', and the abutmentr may be moved over the work-support to a greater or less distance to correctly position a heel upon the heel-seat of a supported shoe. n
There may be applied to the plunger I4 a shoesupporting top and a driver-assembly, furnishing the nailing design most suitable for the work to be performed. The' operator supplies a load of nails N to the passages 42, theirheads being supported upon the inclined ends 50 of thedrivers with the points resting against the inner sides of the passages. These points will-be initially a substantial distance below the upper surfacesof the top 24. With the'plunger I4 lowered, the plate 82 and abutment H10 are soV located vby the handwheel 64' and nut 9,2, respectively, that a shoe S may be ap-V plied to the support, and a heel H placed upon its heel-seat. The work may thus be introduced into the machine. The operator draws forward the lever 28, until the surfaces at the tread and rear of the heel, with which the abutments 82 and |08 contact, are close to these.` He may then release the lever, the work-support being retained in the position to which it is'moved by the friction device 2|. This leaves both hands of theoperator-free to position thejwork and adjust the. abutments by turning the screw I6 and the nut 92 until engagement is obtained which willhold the heel against slipping upon the heel-seat during the inserting operation. Thereupon, further forward movement4 of the lever first brings the work against the abutment, This causes the spring 28y to yield, and as the nailsV are being raised by the driversj through the spaces which exist between their points and the insole, the topk 24 is being forcedagainst said insole, this clamping the workby the force created by the compressed spring. When the nail-points reach the insole and are driven through it into the heel in an inwardly inclined direction, upon continued depression of the lever, the attachment of Ythe heel to the shoe is completed. Elevation ofthe lever lowers the support to release the work for its removal.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

In a heel-attaching machine, the combination with a heel-abutment, of a plunger movable toward and from the abutment and having a longitudinal passage, a shoe-support movable upon the plunger and provided with driver-passages, drivers mounted upon the plunger and operating in their passages in the support, a support-retaining rod extending through the plunger-passage and being threaded into the plunger, and a spring surrounding the rod in the plunger-passage and exerting its force to elevate the shoesupport.

In a heel-attaching machine, the combination with a heel-abutment, of a plunger movable toward and from the abutment and having a longitudinal passage, a shoe-support movable upon the plunger and provided with driver-passages, drivers mounted upon the plunger and operating in their passages in the support, a headed rod extending through the plunger-passage and being threaded into the plunger, a sleeve surrounding the rod. beneath the head and upon which the shoe-support rests, and a spring surrounding the rod and interposed between the plunger and sleeve.
7. In a heel-attaching machine, the combination with a heel-abutment, of a plunger movable toward and from the abutment and having a longitudinal passage, a shoe-support movable upon the plunger and provided With driver-passages and with a central passage, drivers mounted upon the plunger and operating in their passages in the support, a rod having a head in which is a slot, said rod extending through the plungerpassage and being threaded into the plunger with its head in the central passage of the support, a sleeve surrounding the rod beneath the head and upon which the shoe-support rests, and a spring surrounding the rod and interposed between the plunger and sleeve.
8. In combination, a heel-abutment, a plunger movable toward .and from the abutment and having mounted upon it a shoe-support provided with driver-passages and drivers movable in the passages, means whereby the operator may actuate the plunger, and means arranged to retain the plunger in the position to which it is moved by the operator.

In a heel-attaching machine, a frame, a heelabutment carried by the frame, a plunger movable in the frame toward and from the abutment andhavingmountedupon it a shoe-support. provided .with .driver-passages anddrivers movable in passages, means whereby the operator mayA actuatefthe.v plunger, and a friction device movable upon'itheframe and contacting with the plunger.

In combination,,adriver-plunger, a plurality of fastening-drivers carried by the plunger and each: having a fastening-engaging endinclined withv respect to the axis of the driver and being provided atits sidewith a slot having a denite angular relation to the inclined end about the axis ofithe driver, and a polygonal plate secured to the plungerand having a peripheral portion corresponding to each driver and arranged to enter its slot;

In'. a heel-attaching machine, a driverplunger; aplurality of fastening-drivers carriedby the plunger and each having a fastening-engaging end inclined with respect to the axis of the driver and being provided at its side with a slot having a definite angular relation to the inclined end about the axis of the driver, a polygonal plate having a peripheral portion corresponding to each driver and arranged to enter its slot, there being clearance between the drivers of a group thereof and the corresponding plate-edges sufiicient to allow the plate to be moved to one side for the application to the plunger of another driver, and a screw by which the plate may be secured to the plunger to lock all the drivers in position.
12. In combination, a work-support provided with driver-passages 'and with an opening, a plunger cooperating with the support and having drivers movable in the passages, a plate arranged to position the' drivers upon the plunger, and a member securing the plate to the plunger and extending into the support-opening.
13. In combination, a plunger, a plurality of fastening-drivers carried by the plunger, a plate having openings to receive the drivers, a plate engaging the drivers to determine their angular positions about their axes, and means for securing both plates to the plunger.
14. In a heel-attaching machine, a plunger, a plurality of fastening-drivers carried by the plunger, a ylocating plate having openings to receive the drivers, a plate engaging the drivers to determine their angular positions about their axes and to retain them in the openings of the locating plate, and means for securing both plates to the plunger.
15. In a heel-attaching machine, a plunger, a plurality of fastening-drivers having their ends resting against the end of the plunger, a plate contacting with the end of the plunger and having openings in which the drivers fit, a plate resting against that having the openings and provided with an edge-portion for engagement with each driver, and a screw securing both plates to the plunger.
16. In a heel-attaching machine, .a driverplunger, a plurality of fastening-drivers having their ends resting against the end of the plunger, each driver being provided in its side with a slot, a p-late contacting with the end of the plunger and having openings in which the drivers fit, a polygonal plate resting against that having the openings and provid-ed with an edge-portion arranged to enter the slot of each driver, and a screw securing both plates to the plunger.
1'7. In combination a frame in which is an opening, a work-support mounted upon the frame, a screw rotatable in the frame tomove toward and from the work-support and provided with a reduced end in which is a circumferential groove,
a carrier into which the reduced end of the screw projects, a rod extending from the carrierxinto the frame-opening, a screw threaded through the carrier and entering the groove, and ,a heel-pressure-abutment pivoted upon the carrier for cooperation with the support. Y

In a heel-attaching machine, a. frame in which is an opening, a work-support mounted upon theframe, a screw rotatable in the frame to move toward and from the work-support and provided with a reduced end in which is a circumferential groove, a carrier into which the reduced end of the screw projects, the carrier having a forwardly extending lug, a screw threaded through the lug With its head above said lug, a rodextending from the carrier into the frameopening, a screw threaded through the carrier and entering the groove, a' heel-pressure-abutment pivoted upon 'thecarrier for cci-operation with the the frame, asp-ring connecting the screw. andV frame to draw the nut against said frame, and a rear abutment carried by the end of the screw in co-operation with the tread-abutment.
