Description

C. L. MOON BUNION PAD Nov. 1, 1938.
Filed April 2, 1937 Inventor Patented Nov. 1, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
The present invention relates to bunion pads, corn shields and the like, and embodies a novel method of building up or forming the pad as a covering for the affected part.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide an article of this character formed of built up layers of plastic material which solidifies when subjected to air and which is applied in one or more coatings over the affected part for sealing a resilient pad over such part.
A further object is to provide an article of this character which may be easily and conveniently applied by the patient, which serves as a complete seal for covering the afiected part, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted to the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and assembly of the several parts forming the invention as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout in which:--
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the completed pad in position.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on a line 22 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawing in detail the invention comprises a bunion or similar pad or protector indicated generally at 5 and which is formed of a plurality of coatings of latex rubber or the like applied to the affected part of a toe 6 or the like by painting, brushing or dipping several coats of the material thereon with a drying period between each coat. After such several applications of the latex rubber a flexible pad or shield designated at l and preferably of sponge rubber, ground down to size, shape and thickness to shield the affected part from pressure is then placed in position and covered with further applications of the latex rubber as indicated at 8 to form a plurality of layers or coatings enclosing the pad or shield.
As a final step in carrying out the invention added coatings of the latex rubber are provided around the edges to form a beading 9 to increase the strength of the finished pad or protector. The finished product is then worn as a fixed shield which encloses the affected part.
It is believed the details of construction and method of placing the invention in practice will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
The present embodiment of the invention has been described in considerable detail merely for the purposes of exemplification since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description.
Having described the invention what I claim as new is:
l. The method of forming a shield of the class described comprising applying coatings of liquid rubber to the affected parts at successive intervals to form built up layers of material, positioning a flexible pad upon the layers of material thus formed and applying an outer coating of liquid rubber over said pad and said inner coating to secure said pad in position thereto.
2. The method of forming a shield of the class described comprising applying coatings of liquid rubber to the affected part to form successive layers of material, positioning a resilient pad upon said initial layers over the afiected part, applying outer coatings of liquid rubber over said pad and initial layers to enclose the same and applying coatings of liquid rubber to the edges of the outer coatings to form a beading about said edges.
