Description

. WELL PUMP Filed Allg. 31, 1935 ATTORNEYS Patented Oct. 18, 1938 Glinn R. Brown,
Bartlesville, Okla., assigner of -one-third to J. E. Crawford and one-third to H. G. Crawford, Bartlesville, Okla.
Application August 31, 1936, Serial No. 98,812 .2 Claims. (Cl. 10S-226) This'invention relates to pumps for oil and waterwells, andits general object is to provide a device for use with pumping mechanism, that makes it possible to use a working barrel or casing, together with a traveling valve or plunger of a greater diameter thanthe tubing'so as to materially increase production with tubing of the usual size, Without necessitating the impractical method of removing or pulling the tubing, barrel, plunger and rods at the same time, inthe event the plunger or other parts needtobe raised for inspection or repairs, as with the use of my device the rod can be readily disconnected and connected with respect to the plungerr parts from the surface of the well, regardless of the depth of the latter which of course will allow the rods and casing to be pulled or removed from the Well separately.
A further object of the invention is to provide a deviceof the character set forth, that'allows for the free passage of iluid from the plunger and barrel yet prevents `foreign matter such as scale, rust and particles ofstuing box packing or the likefrom getting into the barrel and interfering with the proper function of the traveling valve or plunger. 1 y
Another object of the inventionv is to provide a device that will allow for both attaching and detaching the rods with respect to the plunger parts, from the surface of the Well, for the purpose set forth, and the device is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to install and extremely eicient in use, operation and service.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the device which forms the subject matter of the present invention and illustrating the same applied within the barrel and tubing.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on approximately line 2 2 of Figure l looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary side elevation of the major portion of the device.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference numeral l indicates the barrel, 2 a reducing collar or nipple and 3 tubing.
.Mounted in the barrel is the body 4 of my dethe lower section of the the head, to provide a shoulder hooked portions or shoulders of the heads of the dogs, and the shoulders I6 are shown as being slightly depressed or downwardly inclined to- I6 to receive the 35 mounted in the lower end of what I term a guide tube I8 which disposal within the tubing, as shown. The upper end of the guide 45 tube is likewise threaded to receive the threaded head of the lower section I9 of the rod.
a beveled lower end 2|,
the cammed surface I0 of the heads of the dogs 8 for cooperation therewith for a purpose which will be presently de- 55 scribed. The plug member 20 is provided with a plurality of passages or bores 22, for the passage of fluid from will be apparent, and the passages 22 are relatively small in diameter, so as to prevent the downward passage of foreign matter, such as scale, rust and particles of stuffing box packing or the like into the barrel thereby preventing the same from interfering with the proper function of the traveling valve or plunger.
It is believed that it will be obvious from theV above description and disclosure of the drawing,
that the operation of my device will be apparent,
but it might be mentioned that the body 4 is disposed within the barrel I, in assembling the dey vice, after rod 6 is threaded in the lower end of the body. The plug member 20 is threaded on the collar and the collar is barrel, the collar being section of the tubing, which together with vthe collar, barrel and the parts within the latter arev let into the wall. The locking member is threaded on the lower end of the guide tube which in turn is threaded on the lower section of the rods, and these parts are run in the usual way. When the locking member contacts the cammed inner` surface I0 of the dogs 8, it will be obvious that the head portions of the locking member will spread the dogs, to cause the hooked portions thereof to contact the -depressed shoulder IB,-
thereby locking the rods tothe body. The well is then ready to operate in the usual way. When therods are to be pulled from the well, upward movement thereof will cause the cammed inner surface I0 to contact the beveled lower end 2| of the plug member, thereby separating the' dogs and moving the hooked upper ends from the locking member, as will be apparent, consequently it will be seen that the rods can be readily connected and disconnected with respect tothe plunger partsgfrom the surface of the well, in an easy and expeditious manner and with minimum effort.
Itis thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combinationy and arrangement of the several parts, pro-V the barrel into the tubing, as
posed in the plunger and then threaded nn the threaded on the lower the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In combination a plunger barrel, a body dishaving diametrically opposed grooves arranged longitudinally therein, dogs pivotally secured to the body and normally disposed in the grooves, the pivots for the dogs being disposed within the confines of said body, leaf springs secured to said body at points below the pivots for the dog and contacting the dogs throughout the major portion of the length of the dogs, a guide tube for connection with the pump rods and having its lower end portion interiorly screw threaded, a locking member having an enlarged upper end exteriorly screw threaded for detachable connection with the interior threaded portionV of said guide tube, said member having a conical head and constricted interme- 'diate portion, whereby an annular shoulder is provided at the upper end of the head, said shoulder being downwardly inclined towards thev center thereof, said head being engageablewith the dogs for separating the dogs for engagement with the shoulder, and a plug for the pump barrel having a beveled lower surface arranged in the path of the dogs to remove the dogs from the shoulder.
2. 4In combination a string of tubing, a plunger barrel having a greater diameter than that'of the tubing, spring pressed dogs pivotally mounted within said plunger barrel and having cammed upper ends, a guide tube for connection with the pump rods and to extend within the barrel, a locking member secured to the guide tube and. including an annular shoulder and a conical shaped head atits lower end adapted to spread said spring pressed dogs to enable the dogs to engage said shoulder, areducing collar having its larger end attached to the upper end of the plunger barrel and its smaller end attached to the lower section of tubing, and a plug having ing collar and having its lower the cammed surfaces of the dogs to disengagethe dogs from said shoulder.
