UNITED STATES JOHN A. FRIEND, OF NORPHLET, ARKANSAS.
:DRAINl VALVE FOR DEEP-WELLPMPS.
Application led kApril 21, k1927. Serial No. 185,582'.
This invention relates to drain valves, and has for one of its objects to provide a novel, simple and highly efficient device of this character which shall be especially adapted for use in connection with'the inner tube of a deep well pump and which shall'embody a lever adapted to be actuated by the well casing during the withdrawal of the inner tube so as to eect the opening of the valve and the draining of theinner tube during its withdrawal.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the nature of which will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein: v
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view illustrating the application of the drain valve, the valve being closed,
Figure 2 is is a similar view with the valve opened, f
Figure 3 is a sectional view takenon thev horizontal plane indicated by the line V3 5 of Figure l, and
Figure 4 is a similar view taken on the horizontal plane indicated by the line4--4 of Figure 1.
The casings and inner tubes of deep wellv pumps are of sectional formation, and the sections thereof are connected by couplings with the proximate ends of the casing sections in relatively spaced relation.v It isy frequently necessary to withdraw the inner tubes of deep well pumps, and to facilitate their withdrawal the valve is adapted to ef-V fect their draining during the initial phase of their upward movement with respect to thecasings. y y
To illustrate the application of the valve and the manner in which it is adapted to be opened, there is shown in the drawing two sections of the casing and one section of the inner t-ub of a deep well pump, the casing sections being designated 1 and 2, the coupling thereof 3, and the tube section 4. The valve comprises a casing 5 which is arranged vertically on the outer side of the tube section 4 and which may be formed integrally with said section Vhave horizontal slots 21.
formed on. the'lower end of the plug 7 to permit of its ready application to or removal from the casing 5. The plug 7 is provided in the Vupper portion thereof witha passage 9 which communicates with the upper portion 6b of the passage 6 and which is similar in diameter to said passage portion. A ring 10 which 4is provided at its lower edge with a valve seat 1'1, 4is positioned in the passage portion 6b and the passage 9,` and is provided with an outer flange or rib 12 clamped between the upper end of the plug 7 and the shoulder 18 at the juncture of the passage portions 6a and 6". The casing 5 is provided with an outlet port 14 which extends'-V radially therethrough and communicates with the passage portion 6b. The plugl 7 is provided with an intake port 15 which eX- tends radially 'therethroughand communicates with the passages 9 and with an opening 16 formed inthe side ofthe tube section sage 6 with a bore 19, and is provided above the bore with relatively spaced lugs 20 which A plunger 22 is slidably mounted in the bore 19, and is provided with a reduced lower end 23 which rests upon the ball valve 17. A lever 24 is connected to and between the lugs 2O for pivotal and radial movements, and is supportedy for these movements by a pin 25 which passes therethrough and has its ends positioned in the slots 21.v The lever 24 is normally held against 'movement with respect to the casing 5 by means of a leaf spring 26 whichv is positioned between the lugs 2O and between the inner end of the lever and the tube section 4. Thelever 24 rests upon the upper end of the plunger 22 and is normally supported by the spring 26 an upwardly and outwardly inclined position with respect to the plunger.L The lever 24 is provided with a sharpened outer end and below and inwardly of saidend with al cam lug 27.
In practice, the lever 24 will normally occupyan upwardly inclined position with its free end in contact with the inner surface of one of the casing sections 1,' itsk pivot pin 25 will occupy the innerl ends of the slots 2l, and the spring -afwill be
