Shaft I8 carries a pinion Il meshing with a gear mounted on shaft 2i, the gear 20 meshing with a gear 22 which drives a gear 23. Gears 22 and 23 are mounted on shafts 24 and 2Q respec-` tively, and shafts 24 and 25 carry the feed rollers 26 and 21, respectively, which coact to feed the web of tipping material C.
The shaft I8 also carries a gear 28 meshing with an intermediate gear 29 on shaft 30, gear 29 meshing with a gear 3i mounted on shaft 32. 0n shaft 32 is also mounted a gear sin. which drives a gear 33 mounted on shaft i4. and the gear33 drives a gear 35 mounted on shaft Si. A pinion 31 on a shaft 33, which also carries a pinion Sla, is driven by the gear 3E; and the pim ion 31a drives a gear @t mounted on a shaft it supported in bearings cf the paste pot 4i.
The paste pot 4i is provided with a scrar or doctor 42 which is slidably mounted on the paste pot and equipped with an adjusting screw t; for adjustment of the scraper 42 closer or farther away from the paste wheel G4 and thereby controlling the amount of paste on the latter. As the wheel 44 rotates it transfers the paste adhering to its periphery to a distributing roller 45 which in turn delivers the paste to a rotating seg.- mental paste applicator 46 clamped on shaft 36.
The web of cork or other tipping material unwbund from a reel R by the feed rollers 2e and 21, which advance the tipping material at a speed substantially less than that of the cigarette paper.l P, passes through a stationary guide 41, and its leading end enters the clearance space between the concave 4l and the revolving metallic drum 49. This clearance is slightly greater than the thickness of the tipping material. After a length of the web C sumcient for two cork tips has entered said space, the web is nipped against the concave by the cutting edge of eitlier of the proper length of tip material at the entrance tol this space and sever it across a ledger. plate integrally formed with the concave 4|,nd slightly raised thereon adjacent said entrance. 'Ihe cut strips are then pushed along in said space by the cutting edges ofthe cutters which travel at a linear speed equal to that of the cigarette paper, until their leading .ends are nipped'between the respective protuberance and the raised segment of a roller, as will be presently described.

The web of wrapping material P is from a reel (not shown) over a metallic roller 5I and around a stud 52 carried by the frame 53. 0n the stud 52 is pivotally mounted a spring-tensioned arm 53a which during normal operation is held in vertical position by a 4latch 54. The arm 53a carries studs 55 and 56, and the wrapper web P passes over said studs and between the drum-49 and a roller 51 as it is drawn upwardly by continuously rotating rubber feed rollers (see Fig. 2) driven from the shaft I8 by a gear train (not shown).
The revolving paste applicator 4B, which rotates at a greater linear velocity than the speed of the traveling wrapper web P rubs over the section of the latter spanning the studs 55 and 56 and thereby applies paste to the continuously moving wrapper web at the proper intervals. The pasted wrapper web P is then carried around the roller 51; and the cut portion of tipping material which is being advanced by the cutting edge of either cutter 50 or 50a into register with the web P, is pressed thereon as it is nipped between the respective protuberance of the drum 43 and the raised segment of roller 51.
A cam ti; mounted on shaft I8 is provided with diametrically opposite steps 59 which each successively engage the spring-pressed arm Eil and permit the same and a metallic contact finger 5I fastened to its hub to momentarily move inward.
In case the reel of tipping material is exhausted or broken, the contact finger 6l during its repeated inward movementeventually makes unobstructed contact through a 'slot in the concave 48 with a narrow groove in either protuberance of the drum 49, thus completing a circuit through and energizing a solenoid 63" which thereupon pulls down thev latch 54 pivotally mounted on a stud it and thereby frees the arm 53a. Whenever lthe arm 53a is thus freed it swings away from thepath of the revolving paste carrier 46 with the wrapper web and in so doing, prevents the further application of paste to the wrapper web. At the same time. the electromagnet Si, which is connected in parallel with the solenoid 63, is also energized and attracts an `arm II connected to the female clutch member I I, thus moving the arm 68 as indicated by the dotted arrow to disengage the clutch members II-I2 and stop the cigarette machine, or other type of machine to which the tipper is attached.
For this purpose, one of the lines 81. which are supplied with current from a suitable source of electric current, not shown, is connected by a lead Il to astationary contact 80. When the arm 6I engages one of thc steps 50 of the cam Il and the inner end of the contact maker II enters either of the grooves in the protuberances of the drum 4I, the outer end of the contact maker is pressed against the contact so that the current flows through a wire 1l to the solenoid u. The latter is thus energized and trips the latch I4 heretoforedescribed; 4and the` current flowingl through the wire 1I to` the lectromagnet il energizes it, thereby `actuating the arm 66 to disengage the clutch members I'i and I2, and returns to the other line through the lead 12.
, In case the wrapper web P is exhausted or broken, the eiectromagnet 65y is energized through a branch circuit comprising la lead 13 connected to the line 61 and the roller 5I and a contact finger 14 which is then free to make contact with the peripheryof the roller Il'. The current then passes through the fingen-*14 and flows to the eiectromagnet through a wire `15, returning to the other line 81 through the lead 12. When amasar ing a web of tipping material, a device forapplying paste at predetermined intervals to the traveling webl of wrapping material, a rotary cutter operating to sever portions from the traveling web of tipping material and of itself advance them into register with the pasted sections of the web of wrapping material, said cutter being the` only means-for advancing said portions, and means for pressing the registered portions into adhering relation with the pasted sections of the web of wrapping material. l
2. In a tipper, the combination with mechanism for continuously advancing a web of wrapping material, of mechanism for continuously advancing a web of tipping material, a device for applying paste at predetermined intervals to the traveling web of wrapping material, a cutter operating to sever portions from the traveling web of tipping material and of itself advance them into register with the pasted sections ofthe web of wrapping material, and means for pressing the registered portions into adhering relation with the pasted sections of the' web of wrapping material, a concave provided with an integral, slightly raised, ledger plate, a rotary drum mounted within said concave, the clearance between said drum and said concave being slightly greater than the thickness .of the tipping material and said cutter being set in the rim of said drum and its cutting edge projecting from the periphery of said drum suiilciently to sever the web of tipping material across said ledger plate and push the severed portions along the concave.
3. In a tipper, the combination with mechanism for continuously advancing a web of wrapping material, of mechanism for continuously advancing a web of tipping material, av device for applying paste at predetermined intervals to the traveling web of wrapping material, a cutter operating to severportions from the traveling web of tipping materialvand of itself advance them into register with the pasted sections of the web of wrapping material, and means for pressing the registered portions into adhering relation with the pasted sections of the web of wrapping material, a concave'provded with an integral, slightly raised, ledger plate, a rotary drum mounted within said concave, the clearance between said drum and said concave being slightly greater than lthe Vthickness of the tipping material and said cutter being set inthe rim of said drum and its cutting edge projecting from the periphery of said drum suiiiciently to sever the web of tipping material across said ledger plate and push the severed portions along the concave, and said strippressing means including a protuberance on said drum, the cutter being set in said protuberance, and a roller having a raised segment disposed to coactwith the protuberance to press a pasted section of the webof wrapping material against the severed portion advanced by said cutter.l
4. In a tipper, the combination withmechanism for continuously advancing a web of wrapv` ping material, of mechanism for continuously advancing a web of tipping material, a device for applying paste at predetermined intervals to the l traveling web of wrapping material, a cutter operating to sever portions from the traveling web of tipping material and of itself advance them into register with the pasted sections of the web of wrapping material, and means for pressing the registered portions into adhering relation with the pasted sections of the web of wrapping material, and means for incapacitating the mechanisms for feeding the webs of wrapping and tipping material whenever either web is broken or exhausted. said cutter being the only means for advancing said portions.
5. In a tipper, the combination with mechanism for continuously advancing a web of wrapping material, of mechanism for continuously advancing a web of tipping material, a device for applying paste at predetermined intervals to the traveling web of wrapping material, a cutter operating to sever portions from the traveling web of tipping material and of itself advance them into register with the pasted sections of vthe web of -wrapping material, and means for pressing the registered portions into adhering relation with `the pasted sections of the web of wrapping material, and means vfor incapacitating the mechanisms for feeding the webs of wrapping and tipping material whenever either web is broken or exhausted, a-concave provided with an integral, slightly raised, ledger plate, a rotary drum mounted rwithin said concave, the clearance between said drum and said concave being slightly greater than the thicknessof the tipping material, and said cutter being set in therim of said drum and its cutting edge projecting from the periphery of said drum suilicientlyto sever-the web of tipping material across said ledger plate and push the severed portion along said concave, and said incapacitating means including a driving shaft, a driven shaft connected to and driving said drum, an electro-magnetically controlled clutch connectnig said driving and driven shafts, a main electromagnetic circuit adapted to disengage said clutch, a cam-operated contact maker acting to periodically engage the periphery of said drum within said concave and to close said' main electromagnetic circuit when there are not cut portions of tipping material between said drum and concave, an electrically conductive roller over which the web of wrapping material is drawn, a branch electromagnetic circuit connected to said roller and adapted to disengage said clutch, and a con- Aweb of tipping material and of itself advance them into register with the pasted sections of the web of wrapping material, means for pressingthe registered portions into adhering relation with the pasted sections ofthe web of wrapping material, and means for moving the web of wrapping material out of contact with said device whenever the web of tipping material is broken or exhausted.

The combination with mechanism for continuously advancing a web of tipping material', of cutting mechanism operating to sever portions from the traveling web of tipping material and advance them into predetermined position, and means for incapacitating said mechanism whenever said web is exhausted or broken, said mechanism including a concave with an integral, slightly raised, ledger plate, a rotary drum mounted within said concave and provided with diametrically opposite cutters set in its rim, the clearance between the periphery of said drum and said concave being slightlygreater than the thickness of said web, and thecutting edges of said knives projecting from the periphery of said drum sufliciently to sever the web across said ledger plate and push the severed portions along said concave.
9. The combination with mechanism for continuously advancing a web of tipping material, of cutting mechanism operating to sever portions from the traveling web of tipping material and advance them into predetermined position, and means for incapacitating said mechanism when-v ever said web is exhausted or broken, said mechanism including a concave with an integral, slightly raised, ledger plate, a rotary drum mounted within said concave and providedv with diametrically opposite cutters set in its rim, the clearance .between the periphery of said drum and said concave being slightly greater than the thickness `of said web, and thel cutting edges of said knives projecting from the periphery of said drum sufficiently to sever the web across said ledger plate and push the severed portions along said concave, and said means including a driving shaft, a driven shaft connected to and driving said drum, an electromagnetically controlled clutch connecting said driving and driven shafts, an electromagnetic circuit adapted to disengage said clutch, a cam-operated -contact maker acting to. periodically engage the periphery of said drum within said concave and to close said circuit when there are not cut portions between the drum and concave.

The combination with mechanism for continuously advancing a webv of Wrapping material, of an applicator for applying paste at,- predetermined intervals to the traveling wrapper web, mechanism for feeding a web of tipping material and severing strips therefrom and applying them to the pasted sections of the wrapping material and means for moving the web of wrapping material out of contact with said applicator whenever said web of tipping materia-l is broken.

In a tipper, the combination with mechanism for continuously advancing a web of wrapping material, of mechanism for continuously advancing a webl of tipping material, a device for applying paste at predetermined intervals to the traveling web of wrapping material, members arranged and spaced to receive the web of tipping material therebetween and guide the same, a
cutter operating to sever portions from the travellng web of tipping material as it is advanced between said'members and of itself advance said severed portions between said members into register with the pasted sections of the web of wrapping material, said cutter being the only means -for advancing said portions, andv means for pressing 'the registered portionsv into adhering .relation with the pasted sections of the web of wrapping material.
12. In a. tipper, the combination with mecha-l nism for continuously advancing a web of wrapping material, of mechanism for continuously advancing a web of tipping material, members arranged and spaced to receive the web of tipping material therebetween and guide the same, a
cutter operating to sever portions from the trav-4 eling web of tipping material as it is advanced between said members and of itself advance said severed portions between said members into engagement with the web of wrapping material, said cutter being the only means for advancing Said portions, and'means for pressing said severed portions into adhering relation with the web of wrapping material. f
13. In a tipper, the combination with mechanism for continuously advancing a web of wrapping material, of mechanism for continuously advancing a web of tipping material, members.
arranged and spaced to receive the web of tipping material therebetween and guide the same, a cutter operating -to sever portions from the traveling web of tipping material as it is -advanced between said members and of itself advance said severed portions' between said members into engagement with the web of wrapping material, and means for pressing said severed portions into adhering relation with the web of wrapping material, said members including a stationary ccncave and a rotary drum in the rim of which said cutter is set.

In a tipper, the combination with mechanism for continuously advancing a web of tip-ping` material, of members arranged and spaced to receive the web of tipping material therebetween and guide the same, and a cutter operating to sever portions from the traveling web of tipping material as it is advanced between said members and of itself advance said severed portions between said members, said cutter being the only means for advancing said portions.

In a tipper, the combination with mechanism for continuously advancing a web of wrapping material, of mechanism for continuouslyadvancing a web of tipping material, a device for applying paste at predetermined intervals to the ping material, of mechanism for 'continuously advancing a web of tipping material, a cutteroperating to sever portions from the traveling web of tipping material, relatively moving members arranged and spaced to receive the web of tipping material therebetween and smooth and guide- Cil the same under@ the cutter and'guide the portions severed therefrom into engagement with the web of wrapping material, and means for pressing said severed portions into adhering relation with the web of wrapping material.
17. In a tipper, the'combination with mechanism for continuously advancing a web of wrapping material, of mechanism for continuously advancing a web of tipping material, a cutter operating to sever portions from the traveling web of tipping material and advance them on vto the wrapping material, and an immovable member arranged to guide the same under the cutter and guide the severed portions into engagement with the web of wrapping material.
18. In a tipper, the combination with mechanism for continuously advancing a web of wrapping material, of 'mechanism for continuously advancing a web of tipping material, a cutter operating to sever portions from the traveling web of tipping material, and members arranged and spaced to receive the web of tipping material therebetween and guide the same under the cutter and guidethesevered portions into engagement with the web oi' wrapping material, said members including a stationary concave and a rotary drum in the rim of which said cutter is set.
19. The combination with mechanism for continuously advancing a web of wrapping material, of mechanism for continuously advancing a web of tipping material, a device for applying paste at predetermined intervals to the traveling web of wrapping material, mechanism for severing portions from the traveling web of tipping material and pressing them into adhering relation with the pasted sections of the web of wrappingmaterial, and means for moving the web of wrapping material out of contact with said device Whenever the web of tipping material is broken or exhausted, said -means including a pivoted frame having a plurality of spaced members over which the web of wrapping material passes, and a latch for maintaining said frame in position to cause the portion of the web of wrapping material passingI over said members to contact with said device.

In a tipper for cigarette machines, the comv bination with vmechanism for continuously advancing a web of wrapping material, mechanism for continuously advancing a web of tipping material, members arranged and spaced to receive tip material and guide the same to said wrapping material, a cutter, and means imparting operating movement to said cutter across said tip material to sever a tip therefrom and against the rear cut edge of the severed tip portion in a direction lengthwise of said tipping material to push the severed tip from severing position .to a position in engagement with said Wrapping material, said cutter being the only means for ad vancing said severed tip portion.

In a tipper for cigarette machines,'the combination with mechanism -for advancing a web of wrapping material, mechanism for advancing a web of tipping material, members arranged and spaced to receive tip material and guide the same to said wrapping material, a cutter, and means imparting operatingl movement to said cutter across said tip material to sever a tip therefrom and against the rear cut-edge of the severed tip portion in a direction lengthwise of said tipping material to push the severed tip from severing position to a position in engagement with said wrapping material,l said movement imparting means including driving parts advancing said cutter substantiallyV at the speed of advance of said wrapping material to deliver the cut tip to said last mentioned position at substantially the same speed as that of the wrapping material, said cutter being the only means Yfor advancing said severed tip portion.
22. In a tipper for cigarette machines, the combination with mechanism for continuously advancinga web of wrapping material, of mechanism for continuously advancing a web of tipping material at a slower speed than that of the wrapping material, a cutter for cutting tips from said tip material, means providing a tip-way from tip cutting position to av position in engagement with the wrapping material, and operating means for said cutter imparting feeding movement thereto atsubstantially the speed of the wrapping material to advance the severed tips along said way.
23. In a tipper, the combination with mechanism -for continuously advancing a web of paper, of mechanism for continuously advancing a web of tipping material at linear speed less than that Aof the paper, a device for applying paste at regular intervals to the traveling paper web, a rotary cutter moving at a constant linear speed equal to that of the paper for cutting the web of tipping l material and operating to advance the cut strips into register with successive pasted sections of the paper, and means for pressing said registered portions into adhering relation with the pasted sections of the paper.

In a tipper, the combination with mechanism for continuously advancing a webof paper, of mechanism for continuously advancing a web of tipping material at a linear speed less than that of the paper, a device for applying paste at regular intervals to the traveling paper web, and a member rotating constantly at the linear speed of the paper and operating to sever lengths from the web of tipping material and advance them into register with successive pasted sections of the paper web. 25. In a tipper, the combination with mechanism for continuously advancing a web of paper, of mechanism for continuously advancing a web of tipping material at a linear speed less than that oi.' the paper, a device for applying paste at regular intervals to the traveling paper web, and a member rotating constantly at the linear speed of the paper and operating to sever lengths from the web of tipping material and advancey them into register with successive pasted sections of the paper web, and press them into adhering relation therewith.

In a tipper, the combination with means for advancing a web of paper, of means for advancing a web of tipping material, a device for applying paste at regular intervals to the traveling paper web, mechanism for severing lengths from the web of tipping material and advancing them into register with successive pasted sections ofthe paper web, and means acting to detect absence of severed lengths of tipping material in said mechanism while the same is operating to advance a severed length, and thereupon incapacitate the means for advancing the web of tipping material.

In a tipper, the combination with means for advancing a web of paper, of means for ad-L of the paper web, means vacting to detect absence of severed lengths of tipping material in said mechanism while the same is operating to advance a severed length, and thereupon incapacitate the means for advancing the web of tipping material and the means for advancing the paper web.

In a tipper, the combination with means for advancing a web of paper, of means for advancing a web of tipping material, a device for applying paste at regular ,intervals to the traveling paper web, mechanism for severing lengths from the web o1' tipping material and advancing them into register with successive pasted sections of the paper web, and means acting to detect absence of severed lengths of tipping material in said mechanism while the same is operating to advance a severed length, and thereupon inamasar capacitate the means for advancing the web of tipping material, the means for advancing the paper web and said device.
29. In a tipper, the combination with means for advancing a web of paper, of means for advancing a web of tipping material, a device for applying paste at regular intervals to the trave1' ing paper web, mechanism for severing lengths from the web of tipping material and advancing them into register with successive pasted sections of the paper web, means acting to detect absence of severed lengths of tipping material in said mechanism while the same is operating to advance a severed length, and thereupon incapacitate the means for advancing he web of tipping material and said device.
