Description
Patented Oct. 11, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The object of this invention is to devise a novel construction and arrangement of a concrete insert which can be economically manufactured from wrought metal and which can be bonded in the concrete.
A further object of the invention is to devise a novel spacing member which extends beyond and overlaps the ends of the body portion.
With the above and other objects in view as will hereinafter clearly appear, my invention cc-mprehends a novel construction and arrangement of a concrete insert.
Other novel features of construction and advantage will hereinafter more clearly appear in the detailed description and the appended claim.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawing a preferred embodiment of it, which, in practice, will give satisfactory and reliable results. It is, however, to be'understood that this embodiment is typical only and the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized, and the invention is not limited to the exact arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein set forth.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a concrete insert embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse section, showing the insert as bonded in the concrete and supporting a hanger.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of a portion of the insert.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawing:
l designates the body portion of the insert which is of conventional construction of wrought metal having a bottom wall 2 with an oblong opening 3, side walls 4, the upper portions of which are bent inwardly as at 5 and terminate in outwardly extending flanges 6. The portions 5 preferably have elongated openings 1 to provide a better bonding of the body portion with the concrete.
8 designates a spacing member formed of a strip of wrought metal which is deflected into a general U shape having a top Wall 9, end walls l0 and base flanges H. The opposite sides of the top wall 9 are cut away throughout their length as at l2 to' receive the side walls 4 of the body portion. The end walls H] of the insert overhang the ends of the side walls of the body portion, and are preferably flush with the outer faces of such side Walls. The base flanges II are exterior of the body portion and are welded at I2 to the bottom wall 2 of the body portion. The base flanges II are wider than the side Walls of the body portion and are provided with nail receiv ing apertures 13.
The opening 3 in the bottom wall of the body portion provides for the insertion of a nut or other hanger support I4 which is enclosed within the compartment I5.
By this construction a minimum amount of material is employed, thereby decreasing the cost of manufacture without decreasing the efficiency of the insert and at the same time providing a slot which will give the same degree of adjustment.
By notching the top wall of the spacing mem her and extending the end wall beyond the body portion, the insert is reinforced and strengthened.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
An insert for concrete, comprising a wrought metal body having side walls, open ends and a bottom having an opening therein for insertion of a hanger support, and a wrought metal insert having the form of an inverted U with a top wall contacting the side walls of the body portion, with the end walls of greater width than the top Wall and overlapping the end edges of the walls of the body portion, and with base flanges exterior of the body portion having their inner edges permanently connected with the ends of the bottom of the body portion to form a rigid boxlike construction.
ANTHONY E. DAVIS.
