IMPROVEMENT IN BOOT-UPPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,250, dated March 11, 1879; application filed December 5, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL A. ROBINSON, of Grand Ledge, Eaton county, Michigan, 11 aveinvented an Improvement in Boot-Fronts, of which the following is a specification The nature of this invention relates to improvements in the cutting of boot fronts, by means of which the tendency of the leather to wrinkle at the turn of the front from the foot to the leg is prevented.
The invention consists in cutting a tongue in the front, which, as the front is crimped or bent into shape, overlaps the adjoining parts of the front and is stitched thereto, the space whence the tongue is cut allowing the leather in the bend to be formed without wrinkling.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of a pattern of a boot-front, showing my improvement. Fig. 2 is a perspective of my improved front, bent into shape or crimped and ready for stitching to the back.
A represents what is technically termed the front or footof aboot; andB,the leg, cutin the usual form. Atongue, O, substantially in the form indicated by the line showing the out which forms said tongue, is cut in the center of the front of the leg just above the instep. The tongue is then forced out of its out and the front formed into shape, when the tongue will overlap the adjoining parts, to
which it is stitched.
By this means the boot-front can be formed into shape with very little trouble and without wrinkling at the bend, while at the same time the tendency to wrinkle when being worn is largely counteracted.
I am aware that boot-fronts are in use provided with a tongue similar in form to that described; but in these cases the foot and leg are out from two distinct and separate pieces, and usually of different kinds of leather.
What I claim as my invention is- A bootfront consisting of the leg and foot portions made of a single piece of stock, and having a tongue integral therewith, overlap ping the adjoining edges and secured thereto, substantially as described and shown.
