No. 213,193 Patented Mar. 11,1879.

UNITED STATES PATENT @FFIGE.
JAMES E. HANGER, OF OHUROE IVILLE, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLY-FAN ATTACHMENTS F OR TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,193, dated March 11, 1879; application filed January 21, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES E. HANGER, of Churchville, in the county of Augusta, and in the State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fly-Fans; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a fly-fan to be connected to the edge of a table and worked by the foot, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my flyfan. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are detailed views of parts the: oof.
A represents a lever, of any suitable dimensions, and bent as shown, so as to lie on or near the top of the table, and be as much as possible out of the way of the operator or those around the table. Near its outer end the lever A is pivoted between two ears, I) b, which project upward from the upper part of a U-shaped clamp, B. This clamp is to fit over the edge of the table, and may be fastened by a set-screw or otherwise, if desired.
The top of the clamp B is curved, as shown, the inner end forming a stop for the downward motion of the inner end of the lever, and the center or outer side of the clamp is formed with a projection, a, which constitutes the stop for the downward motion of the outer end of the lever.
At the hinge the under side of the lever is provided with a rubber or felt cushion, d, to prevent any noise of the lever against the clamp; and at a suitable point on the lever is a similar cushion, d, to prevent the lever from making a noise on the table if the inner stop of the clamp should not arrest the downward motion of the lever.
On top of the lever A, a suitable distance from its inner end, is pivoted a cross-bar, O, the ends of which are tapered and inserted in staples e e on two side bars, D D.
The extremeinner end-of the lever is formed with a tenon, h, which is inserted in a slot in the center of a cross-bar, F. The ends of this crossbar are slotted, as shown in Fig. 3, to be sprung over the inner edges of the side bars, D D, and against hooked pins *5, to hold them in position, thus completing the frame of the fan. This frame is to be provided with suitable fringed paper to form the fan, and when the fan is not required for use, or for shipment, the frame can be easily taken apart, so as to be packed in small'compass.
From the outer end of the lever A depends a stirrup, I, for operating the fan by the foot.
The construction of the fan-frame may be changed somewhat without departing from the spirit of my invention. For instance, the crossbar C may have a tcnon at each end to be inserted in a slot in the center of the side pieces, the ends of said pieces being then held in place by strings, thus dispensing with one cross-bar.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The bent lever A, provided with the cushion or bumper d at or near the bend, for the purposes set forth.
2. The hinge-clamp B, formed with a sto at each side of the hinge to arrest the motion of the lever, substantially as herein set forth.
3. The combination of the hinge-clamp B,
and in the center, and fitting on a tenon, h, at
the end of the lever, and over the inner edges of the strip, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
6. The combination of the bent lever A, v
hinge-clamp B, stirrup I, and the fan-frame, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of January, 1879.
JAMES E. HANGER.
Witnesses: A. A. CONE, JOHN H. WEHN.
