My invention relates to prefabricated buildings.
It has among its objects to provide an improved roof supporting structure for such buildings, and, more particularly, for such buildings of the gable end and panel type and of the con struction described and claimed in my copending application Serial No. 46,156, filed October 22, 1935, now Patent No. 2,104,869, issued January 11, 1938, of which this application is a division..
A further object of my invention is to provide an improved roof supporting structure especially adapted to be carried on a wall structure such as described and claimed in said patent and comprising alight metal wall frame presenting panel apertures in a side wall and gable end wall, wherein are disposed panels of insulating board and carrying anchoring material on their opposite faces, my improved roof structure being such as to cooperate effectively with such a wall frame structure to stiffen and strengthen the same without imposing undue loads on these panels, while also enabling the gable end panels to underlie the end roof rafter and overlie the end plate member while being disposed to form a continuation of the wall beneath the latter member and being readily and securely positioned and supported. Still further objects of my invention are to provide an improved roof structure adapted to be carried by the wall plate member and to have the roof weight distributed in an improved manner relative to the studs and reenforcing members forming a part of such a panel type side and gable end wall structure. These and other objects and advantages of my improved construction will, however, hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawing, I have shown for purposes of illustration one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of a corner of a gable end roof structure of my improved construction, certain parts being broken away and others shown in transverse section to facilitate illustration;
Figure 2 is a perspective view viewed from the same angle as Figure l, and taken on a section parallel to the section shown in Figure l, but farther up the roof, and
Figure 3 is a reduced perspective view similar to Figure 1 but showing the arrangement of the roof joists relative to a greater length of side wall shown in Figure 1, including a full width wall panel carried on the foundation between adjacent studs.
It will be noted that I have shown my invention applied to use in connection with a. wall construction of the structure described and claimed in my above mentioned patent. This includes a metal frame having upstanding channeled corner studs I and channeled intermediate studs 2 suitably connected at their bottom to a foundation F, and at their top by downwardly opening channel members 3, 3a, which cooperate with the studs to present panel apertures receiving the edges of panels in the form of insulating boards 4 carrying on their opposite faces vertical reenforcing and anchoring material spacing rods 5, herein spacing anchoring material A and having their upper ends received in and positioned by apertures 6 in lateral lugs 1 on the channels 3, 3a, while their lower ends are similarly positioned in bottom channels 31), 3c. V 1 My present invention involves improved roof supporting means carried on these channels 3, 3a and an improved roof structure carried on this roof supporting means. In my improved construction, the channel 3a, which forms the plate member on the gable end, has a joist 8 supported directly thereon along the top thereof. This joist, as shown, comprises a plurality of channels suitably connected back to back, as by welding, to form a joist of substantially H-shaped cross section. As shown, it is supported on its side on the channel 3a along the length of the latter, with one end of the joist 8 extending over the junction between the channels 3, 3a, and the end face of the joist lying substantially flush with and above the outside side surface of the channel 3. A similar parallel joist 8 is also supported on the channel 3 at a point substantially over the first vertical rod 5 on the panel 4 and it will be'understood that other joists are similarly spaced along the channel 3 and the side wall of the building. Thus, as shown in Figure 3, every fourth joist will be supported over a stud'l or 2 and the intermediate joists will be supported over the rods 5 which are equally spaced across the boards 4. It will thus be evident that with the several joists suitably attached to the downwardly opening channels 3, Set, as by welding or the like, the joists cooperate with these channels and the wall frame structure to produce a light, yet strong, roof supporting construction wherein the roof load is so distributed that no undue load is placed upon the panels 4. Further, the structure is such as to be adapted to connect and brace the wall frame structure, to which the joists 8 are rigidly connected through their welded'connection to the channels 3, 3a. r g 1 r I have herein shown the joists 8 supporting a gable roof structure in which obviously one or more rooms may be finished, this roof structure likewise being of an improved construction. Herein, it will be noted that a channel 9 corresponding to the channel 3a but upwardly disposed, is carried on and along the top of the end joist 8 and suitably connected thereto as by Welding, while panels 10, corresponding to the panels 4, but of different shape and forming the end wall of the gable, are seated in this channel; the upper edges of these panels It), also being received in a channel ll like the channel 9, but angularly disposed relative thereto, these panels 10 likewise carrying rods l2, connected to the channels 9 and II and similarly to the connection provided for the rods 5 heretofore described. Here it will also be noted that the downwardly extending channel II has its closed top disposed under and welded to an upwardly extending parallel channel l3 which extends to the front end of the joist 8 over a diagonally cut end of the channel 9. At its outer end, the channel [3 is also cut so that its end lies in the same vertical plane as the end of the joist 8. Herein, this channel 13 is carried in an upstanding stirrup of substantially U shaped cross section seated on the extremity of the joist 8 and suitably fixed thereto as by welding. If desired, this stirrup may be formed on the extremity of the channel9 but it preferably is a separate member separately Welded to the joist. Here note also that the channel I3, when thus disposed, is adapted to receive the lower edge of the end rafter l5 and that the channel [3 is suitably connected to the stirrup M by a nut and bolt connection [6 having its bolt also extending through the rafter I5. Thus, the bolt connection serves to connect the connected channels I3, II to the joist 8, which is welded to the channeled plate members 3, 311, while the same bolt connection also connects the end rafter l5 to these roof supporting frames thus provided. Here attention is also directed to the fact that a similar stirrup I4 is carried on the extremities of the next adjacent joist 8 (Fig. 1) and that an upstanding channel I! corresponding to the channel 13 and carrying a rafter I8, is similarly connected by a bolt connection IE to its stirrup member, no bottom channel corresponding to the channel H here being necessary. Also, it will be understood that the remainder of the rafters are similarly mounted, as shown in Figure 3, except where there is a gable at the opposite end, when the structure is the same as at the end of the gable described. Further, itwill be notedthat suitable roofers l9 are nailed on the rafters l8 and carry usual shingles 20. Here also, it will, of course, be notedthat the ends of the several rafters are extended out to the ends of the joists as shown in Figure 3, and understood that a usual ground board and cornice structure is suitably connected to the ends of these rafters, this structure being omitted herein to facilitate illustration.
As a result of my improved construction, it is made possible, while utilizing a plate including angularly related plate members especially adapted to cooperate with a wall structure including panels such as described, to produce a strong roof supporting structure above this plate for connecting and bracing the wall structure and carrying the roof structure. Moreover, it will be observed that the disposition and arrangement of the end roof members is such as to enable the end rafter to be disposed directly over the end plate and to enable the panels in the gable end which are above that plate, also to be supported directly below the rafter and directly above the end plate. As shown, it will also be observed that the end rafter is adequately supported on the studs above the end plate member, while enabling these studs to cooperate in positioning the upper panels. Also these panels are positioned in an improved and effective manner relative both to the end rafter and the end plate by improved means and are also so disposed as to enable the panels and 7 frame to be satisfactorily covered with clinched coatings of cementitious material. Further, it will be observed that in this construction the roofload is so distributed relative to the plate members as not to transmit an objectionable load on the wall panels and while still permitting the use of channels receiving and positioning the upper edges of the panel boards and the upper ends of the reinforcing rods. Attention is here also directed to the fact that, on the side wall, every fourth joist is supported directly over a stud in such manner as to have the major portion of the roof load carried by the studs, while the remainder of the load is carried on the gable end studs or distributed in the spaces between both the side and gable end studs wherein the reenforcing rods in effect form supplemental studs intermediate the panel studs. Here it will, of course, be understood that when the inner and outer faces of these panels and the wall frame structure are covered with suitable anchoring material A, such as expanded metal or the like, suitably wired to the rods and panel boards, and when suitable inner and outer coats C of plaster and stucco are applied to this anchoring material, the wall structure is in effect made unitary and unitarily connected with the plate members 3, 3a and the roof structure above these plate members. Also it will be evident that with the rafters carried in the channels provided therefor and with these channels and the other metal supports for these rafters welded together and to the plate members, a very rigid and strong roof structure is provided, and one which maybe very quickly erected.
' While I have in this application specifically described one form which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this form is shown for purposes of illustration; and
that the same may be modified and embodied in other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a building, a wall having a plate structure including angularly related side and end plate members at the top thereof, spaced joists supported on said plate structure, spaced rafters connected to said joists including an end rafter disposed above the end plate member, and panel positioning means below said end rafter and above the said end plate member.
2. In a building, a wall having a plate structure including angularly related side and end plate members at the top thereof, spaced joists supported 'on said plate structure, spaced rafters connected to said joists including an end rafter disposed above the end plate member, and a panel positioning member fixed to the underside of said end rafter'and beneath the latter.
3. In a building, a wall having a plate structure including angularly related side and end plate members at the top thereof, spaced joists supported on said plate structure, spaced rafters connected to said joists including an end rafter disposed above the end plate member, and a panel positioning member fixed to the underside of said end rafter and beneath the latter, said panel positioning member having a downwardly directed panel receiving channel.

In a building, a wall having a plate structure including angularly related side and end plate members at the top thereof, spaced joists supported on said platestructure, spaced rafters connected to said joists including an end rafter disposed above the end plate member, and a panel positioning member fixed to the underside of said end rafter and beneath the latter, said panel positioning member having a downwardly directed panel receiving channel and an upwardly directed rafter receiving channel.

In a building, a wall having aplate structure including angularly relatedside and end plate members at the top thereof, spaced'joists supported on said-plate structure including an end joist, and spaced rafters connected to said joists including an end rafter disposed above the end plate member, said end joist being fixed to said end rafter and to said end plate member and extending along the latter.

In a building, a wall having a plate structure including angularly related side and end plate members at the top thereof, spaced joists supported on said plate structure including an end joist, and spaced rafters connected to said joists including an end rafter disposed above the end plate member, said end joist also overlying said end plate member between the latter and said end rafter.

In a building, a wall having a plate structure including angularly related side and end plate members at the top thereof, spaced joists supported on said plate structure, spaced rafters connected to said joists including an end rafter disposed above the end plate member, and a panel positioning member fixed to the underside of said end rafter and beneath the latter, said panel positioning member having a downwardly directed panel receiving channel and said end plate member having means forming an upwardly directed panel receiving channel along the top thereof.

In a building, a wall having a plate structure including angularly related side and end plate members at the top thereof, spaced joists supported on said plate structure including an end joist fixed to and extending along said end plate member, spaced rafters connected to said joists including an end rafter fixed to said end joist and disposed above the end plate member, a panel positioning member fixed to the underside of said end rafter and beneath the latter, and means forming an upwardly directed panel receiving channel extending along the top of said end plate member.

In a building, a wall having a plate structure including angularly related side and end plate members at the top thereof, spaced joists supported on said plate structure including an end joist, spaced rafters connected to said joists including an end rafter disposed above the end plate member, a panel positioning member fixed to the under side of said end rafter and beneath the latter, and stud means supporting and underlying said panel positioning member intermediate its ends and providing apertures for panels positioned by said member.

In a prefabricated building, a wall structure comprising a metal frame including channeled studs and a plate member cooperating with said studs to present: panel aperturesbetweeff said studs, panels in said apertures'havin'g th'eir edges positioned by said studs and bysaid plate member, and a roof structure carried. by said wall structure having means including joists fixed to' said plate member-and disposed over studs on oppoiste sidesof said panels for'r'elieving the load on said'panels, and roof. supporting members carried bysaid joists and fixed thereto.

Ina prefabricated building, a wall'structure comprising'a metal frame'including chan-f neled studs and a plate member cooperating with said studs to present panel apertures between said studs, panels insaid apertures having their edges positioned by said studs'and by said plate member, and-'aroof structure carried by said Wall structure having means including joists fixed to said platemember and disposed over studs on opposite sides of said panels for relieving the load on said panels, rafter receiving channels carried by said joists and fixed thereto including angularly disposed channels, and means for connecting the ends of said-channels to the ends of said joists over said plate member.

In a prefabricated building, a wall structure comprising a metal frame including channeled studs and a plate member cooperating With said studs to present panel apertures between said studs, panels in said apertures having their edges positioned by said stud and positioned by said plate member, and a roof structure carried by said wall structure having means including joists fixed to said plate member and disposed over studs on opposite sides of said panels for relieving the load on said panels, rafter receiving channels carried by said joists and fixed thereto and disposed on top of said joists and disposed angularly relative thereto, and stirrups on the ends of said joists receiving the ends of said rafter receiving channels and connecting the latter to said joists.

In a prefabricated building, a wall structure comprising a corner frame including a channeled corner stud and channeled cooperating studs spaced from said corner stud and angularly related plate members cooperating with said studs to present panel apertures on different sides of said corner stud, panels in said apertures having edges positioned by said studs and by said plate members, and a roof structure carried by said wall structure including a joist extending longitudinally along one of said plate members and supported by the studs supporting said member, cooperating parallel joists having their ends connected to the other plate member and disposed over studs on opposite sides of the panels beneath said other plate member, and roof supporting members carried by said joists.

In a prefabricated building, a Wall structure comprising a corner frame including a channeled corner stud and channeled cooperating studs spaced from said corner stud and angularly related plate members cooperating with said studs to present panel apertures on different sides of said corner stud-panels in said apertures having edges positioned by said studs and by said plate members, and a roof structure carried by said wall structure including a joist extending longitudinally along one of said plate members and supported by the studs supporting said member,
cooperating parallel joists having their ends connected to the other plate member and disposed over studs on opposite sides of the panels distioned joist and disposed along the latter above the panels beneath the adjacent plate member.

In a prefabricated building, a wall structure comprising a corner frame including a channeled corner stud and channel-ed cooperating studs spaced from said corner stud and angularly related plate members cooperating with said studs to present panel apertures on different sides of said corner stud, panels in said apertures having edges positioned by said studs and by said plate members, and a roof structure carried by said wall structure including a joist extending longitudinally along one of said plate members and supported by the studs supporting said member, cooperating parallel joists having their ends connected to the other plate member and disposed over studs on opposite sides of the panels beneath said other plate member, roof supporting members carried by said joists including an 20 end member fixed to said first mentioned joist and disposed along the latter above the panels beneath the adjacent plate member, and panels positioned beneath said end member and above said last mentioned plate member.

In a prefabricated building, a wall structure comprising a metal frame including channeled studs and a plate member cooperating therewith to present panel apertures, panels in said apertures having their edges positioned by said studs and carrying reenforcing and anchoring material spacing rods positioned by said plate member, and a roof structure carried by said wall structure and having means including joists fixed to said plate member and disposed over said studs for relieving the load on said panels, cooperating intermediate joists disposed over the upper ends of said rods, and roof supporting members fixed to said joists and likewise disposed substantially over said studs and rods.
